Official 2014 Disneyland Dumbo Double Dare, Half Marathon, 10k, and 5k Thread!

Since we are now officially 10 weeks out from the Disneyland Half, and I have been lagging these past two weeks in my training, I'm very interested in getting a FitBit (very interested in the quantified self). Does anyone here training for runDisney races have one ?

I have one and I love it! It is currently out of action (needs a replacement case as DH stretched it and I'm paranoid about it falling off and getting lost), and I miss it terribly :rotfl: It's great that it uploads and resets automatically, as that is usually what stops me using a regular pedometer (forget to reset it all the time, so the numbers don't mean anything). I also love that as well as steps, it records climbs, vigorous activity, and sleep. I clip mine onto my bra and don't even notice it's there. It also means I can still use it even if I'm wearing a dress (unlike a regular pedometer which needs a waistband).

Having said that, it doesn't help my training at all. But sometimes it will make me get up and go for a walk if I can see I'm nearly at 10k steps.

I signed up for the 5k shift too. That 2:30 am start time will be "interesting!"

I signed up to volunteer for the 5k too. I figure it'll help me get to bed early Friday night for DDD the next day.

I have the fitbit flex and I love it. Although I will agree that it doesn't really help me in training. It has shown me though that I just really don't move enough during the day while I'm at work! The only time I hit my 10k steps is when I go for a run!!

I'll try to help where I can!

My first runDisney race (and first distance/timed race ever) was Tink this year and I was put in the second to last corral so there's hope :) With your pace I'm sure even if you are in the last you should be fine.

I can't help with question 2 as I didn't wait in any character lines, sorry!

Not directly in the finishers area. I think they were referring to wandering the parks and finding characters there (Disneyland has the wonderful advantage that their characters walk around the park willy nilly, in addition to those noted in the specific character locations on the maps, for example I saw Captain Hook wandering around the esplanade around 4 p.m. and Alice and the Mad Hatter & Peter and Wendy often frequent Fantasyland)

RunDisney will stop allowing others to pick up packets after this year's Avenger's so you should be fine as long as you/she fills out the Packet Pick Up Authorization form found on rundisney.com :)

Info on the change: http://www.rundisney.com/blog/articles/packet-pick-up-update-03-24-14/

They supply you with a mini Ziploc baggy with four safety pins when you get your bib which you secure to the front of your shirt. (after filling out your emergency contact info on the back of your bib)

There is sometimes a pile-up at the beginning of the water station tables but if you continue to run just past those there will be volunteers ready holding cups in both hands for you to easily receive without hassle.:thumbsup2

Thanks for this info!

Yeah, but I'll be getting up that early the next two days anyway. I'll be coming from the east coast, so I'm hoping it helps me stay slightly on east coast time.

I'll throw in my answers, too!
1. Since I don't have a prior race time to submit, is it 100% certain that I will very the last corral for the 10k? If so, how early should I arrive to get towards the front of the corral? My current pace is about 14:30/15:00 minutes with a mix of running and walking, so I think my pace will be okay but I'm nervous about it because I'm still training to get to the full race distance (Galloway program).
It's been a while since my first Disney race (2012), but I didn't have a time to submit, and was definitely not in the last corral. If you want to start towards the front of the corral, arriving an hour early should be plenty. Even if you are later than that, though, you can usually work your way through the crowd towards the front of the corral, especially if you are by yourself.
2. Does RunDisney usually post the list of characters on the race course before the race? And, if I'm in the last (or one of the last corrals), how long are the typical waits for character photos? I've heard some people say the lines can be as long as 30 minutes.
No, Disney does not post a list of characters on the course ahead of time. Sometimes people post afterwards what characters they saw, and you can look for posts from the previous year's race to get an idea of who might be out there, but I suspect this year's 10K will have different characters than last year's. Last year there were a lot of Wonderland characters out, since that was the theme. This year, you can probably bet on Lilo, Stitch, and a bunch of characters in Hawaiian shirts. As for wait times, I've never started in the back corral, but typically waits are under 15 minutes. The longest I've ever waited was during this year's WDW Marathon Weekend 5K, and that was 30 minutes for Dopey.
3. Are there character photo ops at the finish line/when the race is over? I thought I heard someone mention taking pictures with characters with her medal after the race was over.
What most people mean when that say that is they wear their medal into the park after the race to the regular photo ops and get photos then. At WDW for marathon weekend, they had characters in the finish area for photos (with ginormous lines), but I've never seen that at Disneyland.
4. Can I pick up a race bib for a friend? She will be meeting me there, but might not be able to get to Anaheim until late on Friday. 6. Probably a dumb question, but how do you attach you race bib? Safety pins? Race belt? 7. Water stations - are there usually lines for these or is it something you can grab relatively quickly?
I'll group these together since a previous poster answered these exactly how I would. :) Good luck, and have fun at your first race!

Happy to say I got back to running today. I was doing all sorts of "cross training", but started to notice that it was ALL cross training, and no running. Whoops!

It was on the treadmill, I wore my minimal shoes, I listened to music for the first time in forever...(augh, get that out of my head), I ran longer amounts of time before walk breaks...it was good.

Maybe I'll be able to do this thing! (and 2 10Ks in September, then the Wine&Dine half, then the WDW Half....)

HEE HEE! If it helps any, I read it in the sing-song voice. LMAO.

Glad to get back to running, huh?

I did a mud run last saturday, my first, and today is the first day that I'm not sore. Although the cuts and bruises haven't gone away. HA. I'm going to try and force myself to go run tonight.

Cuts and bruises? Was that any sort of fun?

It was good to get back to it. And although my left toe bone was a bit sore, and the soft tissue all around my heel was, I don't, not tender, not hurting, just...obviously used in a different way than normal, after the treadmill run in the minimal shoes, today my feet feel great. YAY!

Of course the treadmill mileage (small) I did yesterday is nothing to the Half. Anyone ever carry a spare pair of shoes with them during a race?

Is this for if you are staying on property? I don't see the ability to book for sunday yet.

They might publish a list of characters out along the course at the Expo. In 2012, I saw a list at the runDisney booth noting which characters would be at which locations inside the parks.

3. Are there character photo ops at the finish line/when the race is over? I thought I heard someone mention taking pictures with characters with her medal after the race was over.

At both the 2011 and 2012 Disneyland 1/2 Marathons, the Fab Five characters were at the finish line in their running gear high fiving runners as they crossed the finish line. However, they were not posing for photos. There were not characters inside the finish area since that area is hectic enough as is. If you want character photos with your finishers medal, you will need to do that in the parks after the race.

Booked the hotel at last. Anabella would have made me happier, but I book through hotels.com and they were sold out. Sad. If only I had felt like booking earlier. Doing Ramada Plaza instead; I've stayed there once and actually liked it. Reviews are a bit iffy recently. :scared: Hoping it'll be OK. Hilton was on the short list, too.

And I ran again in the Minimus. Treadmill again. With music; exploring that again because running without music has gotten a bit boring. Might think about a shoe that's just a touch more squishy than the minimus, if only for this particular race, because I'm not sure my feet will "break in" fully in time for a Half. :scared:

We are a WDW family and will be flying in to DL for the first time for this race. We've already used the my magic + system/app twice for previous wdw run disney events. I'm having trouble trying to set up our reservation/bands for this trip. Does DL not have this set up in their parks as well?
