Official 2013 Tower of Terror 10 Miler

Hello! My question for the day is about the heat we'll probably be running in. Does anyone here do hot yoga? If so, do you think that's a fairly decent way to get your body used to doing physical work in a hot and humid environment?

Because for me there's really no other way. I live in western WA. We might have just had our two days of summer, LOL.

I did my first hot yoga class tonight, and although the heat was miserable, as I left it occurred to me that it could help out a bit. No, it's not running, but still.

Decent solution?

I dont know... been pretty humid this week. ;) I trained for ToT through last summer which was relatively mild..but honestly, I think our humidity here isn't non existent. The person I was running with was from Boston and the humidity during the race was killing her... but it wasn't anywhere near killing me. For the PHM... I found the humidity noticeable, but again nothing I couldn't handle.

Since it is a big deal to me, I think I will post about it in all of the threads I am sub'd to. I apologize if this is not the first time you are reading about it.:rotfl:

BUT... I tend to have shoe woes when trying to find a new pair. Since my favorite shoe had to be replaced (worn out) and the new version just isn't the same, I ended up returning 4 pairs of shoes before setting on my latest find.

Running in a minimal shoe had me a bit skeptical that the new adidas boost would work for me, but I think it may be a great shoe for me. Two runs... and no problems. Cross your fingers for me. I have an 8 mile run in them tomorrow.. and if they pass that test they are my new favorite shoe!

I don't know about that, the next week looks like it's going to be a killer! But even when it's not as nice, what I would probably try is to run when the day is hottest, so mid-afternoon. I'm not a yoga person, so I don't really know how getting used to hot yoga might help running in the heat.

DH and I are racing the 5K and DD is running the 100m Hopefully in the right direction!

FWIW when I posted I had NO idea it was about to get hot. I figured summer was already over! :)

It's not about being used to running, but being used to simply being active in oppressive heat. To dealing with the sweat and wanting to quit, but persevering.

For the last several years I've been extremely heat-sensitive, where for 2 or 3 years of DH's company party up under Mount Si I've ended up in the First Aid tent being watched over for heat-related issues. Last year that didn't happen, as I'd lost some weight and didn't feel as bad. This year it will probably be even better, given how much I've lost since then. So while I don't think I'm as heat-sensitive as I was, I just don't DO that much in the heat, because of those problems for those years. I'm still a treadmill runner b/c I can't figure out what to do with the kiddo while I run 6 miles in town (homeschooler hermit (the two aren't related...even when in school I was a hermit, LOL...it's actually my son that gets me out and about!) with a traveling husband!), so I still don't get out and about as much as I need to start doing.

So now the question probably makes more sense. :)

I think it's going to make sense for me. Gets me strong in different ways than just running, it'll give me better balance, hopefully will strengthen my wimpy ankle, and I'll get used to sweat streaming down my face.

If you enjoy the hot yoga, go for it! However, I really believe the only way to prepare for running in heat is running in heat. I am a Floridian and train outside year-round. In April, we went on a Disney cruise and I participated in the Castaway Cay 5k. It was absolutely brutal and I train in the heat/humidity. In the past, October evenings have been really nice. It may still be humid but the sun won't be out. I remember being cold at the finish line of the W&D.

:thumbsup2 Repeat after me: NOTHING NEW ON RACE DAY!

Agree! Agree! Agree! This reminds me of my first Disney 1/2 marathon. It was back in 2004 when both the 1/2 & full were run on the same day. The 1/2 finished just outside of MK near TTC while the full marathoners kept going. I decided to try GU for the first time just before entering MK and by the time I reached the castle I was puking. Yup I ran to the right side of the castle and had to lean into the bushes. The best part was a CM was trying to direct me through the center of the castle. I think she thought I had "missed the turn."

Ha, I totally get it. :) You really can never tell with Seattle weather. It's usually not this nice so early in the summer.

Now that you've mentioned your situation (treadmill running, child care), I can see why you'd want to add a heat element to your training. While I agree with Swimfly that practicing running in heat is super important, I doubt it would hurt anything to add some hot yoga into the mix, and it might help, too. In the end, no matter however you train for it, some people will always have a harder time in the heat than others.

I'm definitely one of those people. I ran the Seattle Rock n Roll marathon last weekend, thought I had prepared pretty well, even going so far as to do a few runs through direct sun so I could get used to that possibility, but I still had a melt down on race day. I finished, but my time was way higher than I had expected. I don't know what I could have done differently, other than be better prepared mentally to deal with feeling hot and cranky.

I am waiting at the moment to start the outdoor training. I can run / walk on a treadmill but with it being over 100 for probably the next month, actual training and not walking outside may have to wait. Anyone have suggestions for getting the most out of the treadmill workouts?

I got my 8 miles in today. Well, I stopped where I normally would for 8 miles but my ap on my phone said 7.99 and then when it recorded said 7.98... but I am still calling it 8. ;)

I have been battling a tummy bug the last couple days and so I knew the run wasn't going to be "perfect" Add in the heat and my pace really was not great. But I got it done, right? That is what matters?

Next time though... I must get up earlier and run before the sun gets up!

Awesome!! So the new shoes are working out (saw your post the other day about it)? :)

Sooo... I'm the one with exercise-induced asthma who NEVER ran at all until this past April when I started training for a 5K... after my 8yo son decided to train for one with his school running group. :wave2:

Since then, my son ran his first 5K -- a color run pixiedust: -- and had a BLAST doing it!!! Then last week, I ran my first 5K for an awesome cause (funding treatment for childhood cancers and blood disorders). I can't say that I found is EASY, exactly, but it was doable and very rewarding to finish!

I had a dilemma about what to do next with training, and got some FANTASTIC advice on here! :thanks: I decided to jump to the C210K app, and just ran 5 miles today. I'm training for a 10K in a couple of weeks so that I'll have a time to submit for the ToT 10-miler. And I think for the first time, I'm thinking I MAY NOT actually be crazy for having signed up for ToT!! :rotfl:

Wanted to thank everyone here for the positivity and the advice -- you runDISers are AWESOME! :thumbsup2

Put in my planned 7 miles this morning. Temp was 85 with a feels like of 91. At 6:50am. I almost died.

Okay, that may be overstating. A little. ;) Time for what's becoming my annual PSA...

DON'T BE V!

I refuse to add the recommended 2-3 mins per mile to my pace in the heat because, really, it's hot most of the freaking year here, right? Well I pushed it too far today: 3 miles in I had cramping muscles, tunnel vision, nausea and dizziness, and I went from drenched in sweat to merely clammy - every sign of heat exhaustion. I took a long walk break, cooled off at a fountain and slowed my pace to finish my 7, but lesson learned. Again.

Yes, train in high heat and humidity to acclimate... but be careful.

This message paid for by the sweat of a stupid Floridian runner.

;)

BTW, I went through about 50 ounces of Nuun and water and STILL wound up 2 pounds down. Crazy!

Hi All! I'm registered for this race. It will be my first Tower of Terror. It will be my 7th runDisney race. I ran Princess in February and nearly died of the humidity so now I'm really scared about TOT but..I'm registered and a bling junkie so..I'll toe that start line!

Is there a good packet pick-up strategy?

The Expo is open from 12pm-8pm on Friday and 10am-4pm on Saturday. My parents, DS4 and I are staying at a host resort (OKW). I'd like to maximize the amount of time I spend with DS in the parks. Friday is our first full day, so we'll likely go all out, including fireworks. The best idea I've been able to come up with is to catch a cab from a park on Saturday at 3 and then Disney transportation back to OKW.

How are others approaching it?

I promise to not be V. :)

Hope you are feeling better.

I've never been so this is hypothetical. I hear it can be fun to wander the expo, so I want to make sure I have some time to do that. As much as I want to hang out with hubby and son, if they don't want to wander the expo I'll just have to leave them behind somewhere so they can do something else.

Has anybody seen the 2013 medal, the medal itself is the same but the ribbon appears all new. It's a black and red checkerboard pattern with Stitch dressed as a bellhop and the races name in yellow.
