Official 2013 Tower of Terror 10 Miler

Did 3 very slow outdoor miles today. Did not bring enough water to combat that heat here in Texas. 91 while I was walking. Tomorrow is 7 miles. I might just stick to the treadmill this week. Anyone know the average temperature for October in Orlando?

The heat isn't the issue it is the humidity. Last year it was hot and humid so humid where you couldn't tell how much water you lost so a lot of runners were dehydrated.

Early October can still be very hot, highs I'm the 80's to even 90's,you have to wait until mid October at least for some cold fronts to come through and cool the temperatures off.Even at night it's likely to be a pretty warm or even hot race.

Yep, early Oct is still pretty much summer down here. Possibly a touch more comfortable than last year, but plan for highs in the high 80s to low 90s, lows in the high 70s, and high humidity.

Lots of time still to train - we can do it! Speed work on tap for me tomorrow... that means less time outside- yay!

Darn the humidity! It's been beautiful to run outside here in NJ. We've been to Disney mid to late October once and the weather was beautiful even at night. Maybe we'll get lucky this year and it won't be so humid. Haha!

Early October and mid-late October are like night an day. I always joke Florida doesn't have spring or fall just a super long summer and brief mild winter haha.

i was so excited to get the email. i'm trying not to read too much into the fact that the Hag (from Snow White) was pictured twice. i would flip if she were either on the course or at the party.

we're planning to hit MNSSHP on Oct 6. i was worried that i'd wear myself out too much if i did the party the night before the race. we're planning an easy day for Saturday and then to rest that afternoon.

I have a question. the email said that those who register for the party before August 31 would get a commemorative ticket. has anyone gotten one? I have my family's tickets and they are nothing special. they're the same tickets we've gotten for parties in the past.

I tell everyone we have 10 1/2 to 11 months of summer a couple of weeks change of seasons and a weeks worth of winter :lmao:

I was excited when I read that there was an email. Last year, that email had a virtual goodie bag. Sad to see it wasnt in this years :sad2: I got some pretty cool stuff last year.

I noticed that--the company that usually does the posters/postcards (lasting commemorative?) still had a link to get the voucher on their website somewhere. I was wondering what happened to the igoody bag...

But I am still incredibly excited!

I missed the voucher last year... but the loved the goody bag with the cliff bar stuff. I am not sure if everyone was aware of the goodies that they sent for that...but it was pretty cool stuff. Even got a cool lunch enviro tin thing... (as well as some yummy treats)

But.. goody bag or not, I am also still excited!

Well, I'm pretty glad I hit 10 miles in training last week... because it looks like ill be benched for a while. Injured, AGAIN. I was having an amazing speed workout yesterday, 6 x 800m. Ran the first 4 feeling strong and then, when I started the 5th, something hurt badly on my right leg, on the outside and below my knee. NOT my cranky IT Band, which is on the left.

All Google diagnoses point to a grade 1 sprained LCL. It's a little swollen and hurts to the touch right where the LCL attaches to the fibula head, and a little tender where it attaches to whatever at the top, too. No pain walking , bending, normal moving around, only on push-off when I run.

I'll call my doc tomorrow, but I know the course of action: rest for a week, strength exercises week 2, light running after that. Hoping to get an okay on replacing my running days with walking, at least. Just once, I'd like to enter race season uninjured. :(

Hi all -

For those of you who have run the Disney races before, how are the water stops?? I'm debating bringing my fuel belt with me. It seems that the stops are plentiful, but I'm always afraid of races that run out of water or cups (although cups isn't such a deal breaker!). Thoughts?? First time running a Disney race. Also doing W&D, Tink, and Princess!!

Pretty much two seasons Summer and a couple weeks of change.

You know what it is like here. Mid 90's with a heat index in the 110's. A lot of fun to train in. :rotfl2: But if it is that hot in October which is can easily be at least we are used to it.

I can't say how many there were last year for the TOT 10 miler since I didn't run it but for the full marathon I took water and Powerade at pretty much every stop along with the Gu gels they gave out and the ones I brought with me and I finished the race feeling bloated from so much drinking. On top of that they gave us a bottle of water and Powerade at the finish along with the Run Disney food box.I really don't think there's a chance they'll run out of water or cups.

Sounds similar to what I had...I went to PT and after weeks of telling them that I was sure it wasn't ITBand (and it not getting better), they decided it was fibular head tendonitis. And then after figuring that out and working with that, it got better!

Sorry - this went long for a short answer

In general, some of the best aid stations out there. Well laid out, prepared and large. Generally Powerade through the first set of tables (on both sides) then water. One really does not need supplemental hydration.

The only real aid station snafu that has occurred was 2007 during the marathon. the weather took an unexpected jump to the hot side...so much so that even during the pre-race festivities the race was pushing runners to focus on sport drink for electrolytes. Long story short, tables ran out of fluids in the later miles of the race. With the exception of am occasional falling behind at a station I have not seen anything nearing this issue. In fact quite the opposite as during the 2013 marathon, the race was taking liter bottles of water and letting runners pour it over their heads.

That was the one off worst situation. I would bring your fuel belt and consider running with it for any one of the following...

- You train and hydrate in a way where you are taking on fluids more often than once every mile and a half.
- You find that you need to hydrate at regular intervals. While the average is 1.5 miles, they can stretch out. Disney generally does not hand up water prior to a park entrance in an effort to help keep the park clean; this can make for a longer interval in some aid stations. I believe the loop through WWoS is longer than most other stretches in the ToT 10 miler... about 2 miles.
- You have issues with sport drinks in general and you have one that works for you. Note that the PowerAde in the race is not the PowerAde you find in the bottles. The powdered or are version does not contain HFCS and is mixed about 50% of suggested strength
- You need the security of knowing you can survive without the aid stations or the weather is much more humid and warmer than you have recently trained through.

Pack it, then you will have it if you decide to run with it. Though you more than likely will not use it.

Missed my training run this weekend...too much rain and too much on the schedule. Fortunately it was not a longer run. 8 miles coming up this weekend. Need to make sure to get my training runs in this week and maybe make up the missed run if I can.

DH decided to book flights for us last week, rather than drive. Its not a terrible drive, but to give us a little more park time (and mainly so he can have a waterpark day) he booked the flights coming in Friday morning and home Monday night! :cool1: Now to figure out a schedule and get him the right tickets. DS and I have passes...so we just need to buy the waterpark tix. I know DH wants to hit F&W...probably the day DS & I go to MNSSHP.

I am looking forward to this trip...even if its a quick one. Now to just finish the training program and be ready for the race!

:sad2: I am so sorry that you are again injured!
Thanks - I'm hopeful that it'll be a short-lived one and easily remedied!

There was plenty of water to be had at last year's TOT, in my experience. I carry my own bottle because I do best sipping regularly versus downing a cup or two occasionally. I refilled at every water station easily, grabbing a couple cups and dumping them into my bottle.

Sounds similar to what I had...I went to PT and after weeks of telling them that I was sure it wasn't ITBand (and it not getting better), they decided it was fibular head tendonitis. And then after figuring that out and working with that, it got better!
Thanks for sharing that! Having battled ITBS on the other side, that was m,y first thought, but when the painful lump appeared below my knee, I knew it had to something else. It's actually even more tender to the touch now, after 2 days of rest - totally unlike ITBS. I've got an appt with my chiropractor this afternoon... hoping it's something that'll respond to rest and I can bounce back quickly!
