Does anyone run with custom orthodics? I just had my feet cast for them. My question is what to do for shoes...I currently run in stability shoes, but the orthodics should, in theory, do all of that correction for me so stability shoes may be too much of a good thing. My podiastrist said I could try running in the stability but I should probably move to neutral. What have others done? And in this case, did you just move to the neutral shoe of your normal brand or what? Confused!

Does anyone else have the problem of your hands swelling while running? Mine do, and they end up looking like the StayPuff Marshmallow Man!

If so, what do you do about it to keep it from happening, or keep it from being so bad?

I used to have that happen, but it stopped after using Nuun instead of plain water. It seemed to be connected to not enough sodium in relation to the amount of water I was drinking.

I'm running with DH, even though he won't wear a skirt or pretty tiara! It is princess after all! :confused3. We're staying at CSR and making a 10 day vacation out of it! This will be my first Princess and first 1/2 marathon! I've been training pretty hard but I think I might end up doing walk/run intervals.

Can anyone tell me about full compression tights? I've been using compression calf sleeves through summer and now need to wear a compression knee brace, too, AND have been told compression shorts are a good idea for my ITB/hip/glute issues... seems like it would be easier to just wear compression tights instead of doing it piecemeal. Do they squeeze about the same as all of those individual elements?

Sometimes my hands get puffy so I just put my hands above my heart or head for a little while---looks stilly but it works for me.

Maybe someone else can chime in ????

I can tell you that they don't make them for short people with extra junk in the trunk! :rotfl2:

I've searched high and low for a really good pair that fit me properly and I don't believe they exist.

I KNEW it! I was looking at some at Road Runner Sports and they all have these ridiculous inseams - even the "petites" would be long on me! I'm seriously considering a trial run of Spanx under my regular old tights. They're pretty squeezy!

Yep! I even thought, well, i'll just get capri length, but it still doesn't work because they are made and sewn in a way where they support in specific spots...but for expample on me where the knee support is, it actually hits my calf area, so it ends up not really doing me any good.

Spanx sounds like a good idea!

lululemon athletica will custom hem their run tights if you need, free of charge.:thumbsup2 ! Great to know! I am only 5'1. Also what I did last year was I bought a pair of the 7/8 run tights that would be short on a tall person but on me they were regular full tights!

That's awesome!!! That's what we did with the Tower of Terror race, and 10 days was just amazing!!! :goodvibes:goodvibes

thanks, that's good to know! I really like the Nike capri length dri-fits at the moment. I just really would've liked to have had a pair of the CW-X compression shorts, capris or tights :( I feel like they would've done wonders for the soreness in my hips and quads after really long runs.

I was going to say this is what I do... raise my hands for a bit. Get them above my heart. Not sure if this is "true" solution... but seems to work for me too.:goodvibes

Awesome! I find the lulu fits are way better for my curves than any Nike or UA. It's all about trying, finding what works, and running with it! Hahahaha Pun intended!!! :-P

I have this problem in the summer , I was told more salt (like in a sports drink) because the electrolytes get all wackadoodle (not the medical term) and the extra water can't sweat out so my hands swell. It never happened until the last half mile of a 4 mile run so I'd just drink a Power Zero when I got in. (Also take rings off before running)

Hi! I trained in 20-40 degree weather here in ny. I actually love it. Gear is the most important thing with cold weather running. Cotton socks, cotton anything can be dangerous in cold. Always look for wicking, athletic fabrics, and layer for warmth and protection.

I worked for lululemon athletica for years and stocked up on amazing cold weather run gear. I basically wear long, wicking, compression tights as my bottom. For my top I layer a wicking bra-tank (Power Y style, I am small busted so it works for me) and tuck it into the tights. Then my long sleeve is called a Run: Swiftly Tech Long Sleeve. It's an anti bacterial, vented, wicking shirt. If it is 30-40 i really only need just that because I really heat up right away. If it's particularly cold or windy I add a wicking hooded pullover that has cuffins for my hands and a hole for my garmin, clutch ;-) The run tights have 5 pockets, 3 in the waistband and 2 vents that can be vents or pockets on the leg. They rock. This year the tights have 7 pockets or more! I also use a wicking ear warmer. I have to bring bounty paper towels because my nose POURS snot! Sorry for grossness! I put that in my waistband or in the pocket of the hoodie.

Holy cow - tell me which pants they are that have so many pockets?!?! I think I have a pocket fetish and I just can't find many satisfactory pants with them.

Warrior Dash is probably a really good entry level mud/OCR if you want something that isn't super girly or full on brutal. For girlier (but not totally priss) you could try Dirty Girl. It's fun and a fair entry level one with options to do easier obstacles if they look too daunting. I would avoid Pretty Muddy as it's basically inflatable purple children's toys. If you want to look at something that gives levels to work toward a "system" of races, the Spartan Races start with the Sprint and then the Super and then the Beast (and there are more for those wanting even more challenge). Merrill Down & Dirty offers a 5K and 10K option and I would say they are challenging but not horribly awful. For a first time to see if you like it, I would probably go Warrior Dash or Dirty Girl. Those are fun and not overly competitive where you are going to be plowed down by some die-hard elite team and will give you enough of a taste to see if you like it.

These are all ones that run as a series in different locations so you can find them near you. There may also be ones that are exclusive to your area.

Mud runs are totally my thing and I am happy to answer any questions or if you think of a race and want an opinion, I know a lot of people who run these even if it's one I haven't done yet.

I do believe a girlfriend and I are committed to and recruiting for the Dirty Girl when it comes to Atl in April. Neither of us have ever done one before but I saw some friends' pictures from last year and it looked like a blast!

I'll be adding a cheap pair of fuggs or warm slippers to add to my shopping list. I'm not too worried about the running part, but I am worried about standing around in the cold pre-race.

I HATE the cold - HATE it. It was cold last year but I had a cheap pair of knee socks that I had cut the foot off of and used them as arm sleeves. They worked fine. Was wishing, though, that I had tucked them in a waistband instead of cast them to the side because post race was freezing. You know how chilled you get when your body cools down and it was misting rain.

I went on a 6 mile hike today with a friend of mine. I was Miss Graceful and slipped, falling right on my tailbone about 3 miles in! It was incredibly painful and I'm worried that I'm not going to get in my long run this weekend :scared:. Not to mention when I slid, I fell into a giant pool of algae/bacteria infested cold water. Luckily my friend is a strong guy, and lifted me up and out quickly, only for me to slip and fall again because my shoes were soaked. Needless to say, I'm pretty beat up after that hike. And I thought I was doin' some special bonding with mother nature, instead she kicked my butt, literally :rotfl:!

I hope everyone is safe out there on their runs! Especially those tackling the snow - I'm happy to be in Arizona reading about all the gear you guys wear. I'm still in tank tops and capris. 70 degrees and almost December :confused3

Oh, no! Well, at least you can laugh about it! I hope it is just soreness and not something more complicated. Sometimes Mother Nature's a b****!

Oh no, I hope you are feeling okay today!!

70, I'm jealous. Although I run much faster in the cold (and breath easier), it was a bitter 26 yesterday morning and I just couldn't do it so I hit the treadmill. It feels much warmer today (33) so I'm getting ready to head outside.

I've pretty much decided I'm going to dress as Alice for the race. I know she's not a real princess but my daughter dressed as her for Halloween and she is the current favorite in the house. Now to figure out how to put the outfit together.

LOVE Alice! Got the DVD for my birthday this year! I am a big honking ninny about the cold, but the year I started training for my first Princess was the year we got actual, honest to God snow in Georgia! I was out there and felt okay while I was running, but when I got back inside and tried to talk to my husband, I realized that I couldn't feel my face! Kinda freaked me out a little!

I found a pair of compression tights at Old Navy. I'm 5'2 and they fit pretty much just right, lengthwise. Cheap, too.

REALLY wishing I had a treadmill / gym membership for weekends like this. Supposed to do 7.5 this weekend. Old neighbors are coming to see the new house and play at 10:30 Saturday. DS4 has a birthday party from 1-5. Sunday? Church, another party for Mr. Popular and a boy scout den meeting for DS10. These kids are cramping my miles!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just looked online for you. New styles come out every single week. So far the styles i am seeing have 5 pockets. All lululemon run pants have mininum 3 pockets. Two waistband pockets (i'm able to wedge my iphone 4s in there, i have a slick method) in the front, and a secure zipper pocket in the back waistband. Then some have leg pockets too. The Star Runner Tight looks cool. There was also a style with some water repellent cuffs on the bottom I was just eyeing! Darn you! Hahaha. Check out lululemon.com, it's always free shipping and you can return it in your local store if you don't wanna ship it back.

Based off a few of these recent posts - is there a benefit in running in 'compression' pants/tights/socks/etc? I've never heard of that, probably because I'm kind of new to running. So I'm curious if I should pick some up for myself if they have any benefits! I just run in capri-like sweatpants that I've had for ages. So I'm just curious!

I have compression tights I put on after an ice bath following a long event. I don't like to run in the tights, but I do have compression sleeves for my calves and I will wear one or two of those depending on how my legs feel at the start of a long run.

Regarding the pocket discussion.... I am a pocket freak! I don't buy any pants if they don't have pockets. I love hearing this about the lulu pants. One word of caution I will share... I bought a pair of RaceReady shorts with several pockets to use for long runs. They were quite comfy and didn't cause a bit of problem... I decided to wear them for the Princess 2009-my first run over a 10k... Well, between my camera-probably my phone and whatever else I thought I needed that day, I spent the entire race pulling or holding my shorts up because the pockets were so weighted down! :rotfl: my suggestion is to not only practice to make sure the pants/tights/shorts are comfy, but make sure to practice with what you plan to carry in your pockets!

I believe the theory behind compression is based on increased blood-flow...which can improve performance and help speed recovery. I think there's different "levels" of compression though...for example...the Nike capris I wear say they are "compression gear", but honestly they are more just like leggings as far as I'm concerned. I don't see them having any sort of compression benefits...they are just comfortable to me. Same goes for the UA "compression" that I've seen at regular sporting goods stores. Then there's the CW-X brand (and many others...it just seems to be the most popular), which has all sorts of "science" built into them, and the price tag to prove it! There's an obvious difference in the two that you can see just by trying them on. I have a pair of compression calf sleeves by CEP. I tried running in them a time or two and didn't really notice they did anything to help. HOWEVER, they are little miracle workers for recovery!!!! I put them on for the rest of the day after a long run or after a race and the next day my calves are as fresh as if I hadn't run in a month. Absolutely NO soreness...which is why I tried so hard to find a pair that I could wear as shorts or capris (or a full body suit!!! lol!) to help with the soreness after long runs in the quads and hips...but no luck for a short, unproportioned princess like me :)
