Official 2012 Wine and Dine ½ Marathon Thread

Like others, I'm slowly adding miles now. I've done two - 8 milers. Will try for 10 miles next weekend.

From the sounds of the results from last night's ToT 10 miler (which theoretically could have been the running of the W&D Half, had they left the schedule alone) the weather was miserable. Hot and humid. And too much of both. So glad we have another 6 weeks for the weather to break a little bit in Florida.

Yeah, reports back from ToT aren't pretty. Terrible heat and humidity, but for those of us that live in Florida it is just more of the same.

I will gladly however take 10 - 15 degrees cooler. I ran 8 on Friday night and didn't seem too bad, but I can imagine that for those who are under trained and not accustomed to this weather, it could spell trouble.

I was looking at the course map last night and one question. Why is the food stop so far into the race? Just after mile eight?

That seems so late in the race to even matter.

I always bring my own Gu so the Clif Shot Bloc stop at mile 8 does not bother me. Make sure you bring something if you need it earlier in the race. see you in November!

Agreed. I started GUing at about 35 minutes. While I would love to be at mile 8 at 35 - 45 minutes, I know it's nonsense.

I guess mile 8 might be okay for my second GU....

Thirded. I find that I need just a slight pick me up to tide me over until the end of the race around mile 5-6.

Well, the next 2 weeks are my most stressful of training. I'm an accountant, so work will be insanely busy through October 15th with long, long hours at the office. Maybe the long hours will be good for night running.;) Honestly, I hope I can get the training in. I don't want to lose my endurance.

I feel your pain. I'm not an accountant anymore but my husband is and I find "month-end" and "quarter-end" to be very difficult for my training too since we have a little one and it's basically me and him from the wee hours of the morning until late on those days. I'd be completely lost without my treadmill. Good luck to you! I remember used to fall asleep by 9pm on Fridays during busy season when we worked long weeks and hours...

Agreed, October is going to FLY by... I anticipate being exhausted since I already am a bit burned out. We are in the process of purchasing a house and will likely get the keys 8 days before we leave for WDW to move with, I do hula 1x week, run 3x a week (including two more looong runs before the race) and just was accepted into a volunteer program at our local zoo which requires all day training every saturday in October (9-4). Oh, and I work full time Monday through Friday of course! Busy busy busy!! Grant me strength..!!

Hey wine & diners.... I'm feeling burnt out too and on the verge of just wanting to stop. Maybe someone here will inspire me to keep on, or the strength to walk away. My problem is that I do NOT want to be a quitter. I had a really GREAT 11 mile run on Saturday. But by late saturday night, I felt just terrible! Major tummy issues. This is the third time I've felt like that out of the past four long runs (6.5, 8, 9.5, 11). I used to feel this way all the time when I first started running but now I can do 3-4 miles without any issues as long as I don't eat too much too soon before my run; but now it's just on the longer ones. I have been using Clif Shot Bloks at about each hour mark (11 miles took me 2:15 or so). I'm thinking that might be the culprit and if I keep at this, I'm going to try some honey stingers next time. And i'm only going to do one more really long run before the race, and cut back to 8 or so next time instead.

But I am just weary and tired. I've been dealing with major job stress, major parenting stress, and some health concerns (chronic headaches, TMJ). But I know we all have challenges and I don't want to whine. I just am feeling disappointed that I feel so badly after my run. I felt GREAT while I was running and immediately after. My toes are protesting (I think I need even another half size bigger shoe), and my legs are tired (normal running tired), but I'm thinking I might have some shin splints developing again on the outsides of my shins this time. Nearly every part of me is telling me to "throw in the towel and just go ENJOY the trip instead of running and then spending the last two days of our trip miserable." Every part except the competitive side of me. The part that knows I can complete the distance. The part that says, everyone already knows you're doing this you can't give up. The part that says, "all that time and effort invested!" The practical part that says, "go and do it, even if you have to scale back and walk the last half of it!"

Anyone have personal experiences with getting over the slump that they want to share?

I did the 11 on Friday morning before we went out of town to Jacksonville, FL for the weekend. Made it. My feet hurt last two and that was the first time. (I can't remember the last time my feet hurt.) I guess I'm still building the endurance. Had to walk last 1.5 to 2 of it. Thinking back now, I wish I'd just adjusted down my Galloway ratio instead of just walking the last 1.5-2. But, in my mind, I was DONE running around that 9 mi. mark. It was hotter here that day, as well. Felt sluggish through the whole run. Never got that zip and zing feeling. Thinking it was the heat and/or eating breakfast an hour before the run.

Jacksonville, FL this weekend was so hot and humid. I saw the TOT reviews, too. I don't know how they did it. We couldn't wait to head North to get out of the humidity yesterday. Surely, in 5 more weeks it will be cooler down there. Dear God, I hope so! :)

I live in Jax, lol! This is normal for October in FL. I actually was down in Tampa thus weekend and totally feel for the TOT runners, not a good night. Never cooled down and humidity was through the roof all night. We should be more like 70's by WnD, let's all pray for cold snap;).
I had a back down week so nothing too crazy, getting psyched up for 1/2 marathon this Saturday. Planning on marathon-pace, hoping I can do it!

First off, I want to say that I really hope things start to pick up for you and the stress eases. Race or no race, stressful circumstances just aren't fun. I hope you also start feeling better!

Second, one thing I keep telling myself is that the race is too close to quit now. Especially today since I can officially say it is next month. Saturday morning I woke up for my long run and just wanted to quit and go back to sleep. I had only gotten about 4 hours of sleep...and that had been interrupted a few times by DD2 who kept waking up for one reason or another. I know that is minor in comparison to what you are dealing with, but that was just one example of the many I have faced. It is so much easier to say "screw it." At this point I am not looking at all the effort wasted...just that the race is too close for me to give up now. I think I would have had an easier time giving up if we were still a few months out or longer.

Third, I would definitely try something other than the Clif Shot Bloks. If everything else is checking out ok, then that might be the culprit. I haven't used Honey Stingers (I plan on buying some soon to see how they are...in the mean time I have used glucose tablets and rock sugar). It may be that the shot bloks are just too harsh on your stomach. I hope something works out for you!

Finally, even if you have to walk a lot in the race, look towards the end goal. It is SO easy to just want to give in and give up. But would there be any regret? Would you look back and say, "I wish..."? If so, hold on to that. And remember...it is not much longer before you do the race and breathe that sigh of relief. :thumbsup2

First, realize we all have felt that....in all forms, even the tummy issues :) The more you run the more your body will adapt. Yes, you have to be careful with what you eat, but it slowly gets better. This will be my 4th Half and my 7.5 miler this past Sat threw me for a little loop when I was done. I found the more gels I eat, the worse my stomach does, so I stick to a banana and toast about 1 hr before I start, then a Gel about mile 4-5 then adreneline about mile 9 :). In fact, I don't think I even did a gel this weekend, just stuck to sweet potatos the night before then my pre-race relaxation and food.

Second, realize how far you've come - I won't even hit 11 to 12 miles until two weeks before the half. You're there!! Now to let your body adapt. I love programs that give me a week to back off, so it might be time to take that or work it in. Treat yourself with a new pair of shoes (went through that as well) and break them in with 3-4 mid-sized runs this week. Don't time yourself, just enjoy the fact that you can do this. Take time to stretch and recognize how strong you've become.

Third, realize we will all be there with you. Disney races give me a chill - not just because of where you're running, but because of the type of people you're running with. When you want to stop in that last 2 miles you'll have people you've never met before running with you and encouraging you - let yourself be awed by the sights and the ability you've gained - it's ok!!

Hope that helped - gave me a little motivation for the 4 miles I have ahead of me today.

THANK YOU so much guys! I completely agree that it's SO close that is part of why I don't want to give up. I know I can finish the race. Well, I'm not sure I would survive running/walking it in a freat heatwave or douwnpour, but I am not thinking about weather this far out. But barring all that, I know I can complete the distance, it's how i felt after that makes me want to give up. But I'm going to at least stick it out for 2 more weeks of training. My training plan is for three 3.5 milers a week with the last one being a 12.5. I am going to scale that back I think to maybe 8.5 or 9 and then my last long run will be somewhere up around 12. I hope it's ok to do that. My weekend runs then would be 11 (last weekend), 4, 8, 4, 12, 4, race. I'll try the honey stingers on the next hour+ run and see if that makes a difference.

And great idea about "treating" myself to new shoes. I think I've been avoiding going back to the store b/c it took me such a long time to find the ones I'm in now. Maybe I'll just go online and order the same ones a half size bigger. The idea that it's a reward for how far I've come makes it easier to justify and do it. I was never a runner, even before my injuries a few years ago. Running a mile was pretty much out of the question, let alone 2, or 3, or 13! I have no idea who this person is in my running shoes who just went out on Saturday and ran for 2 hours!

Oh - I'm in my BFF's wedding 2 weeks after the race. The weekend before the race I have to throw the bachelorette party and somewhere in there, I have to get my dress fitted too. I'm super nervous that I'm going to eat too much after finishing the training and my dress will end up not fitting! LOL. I told my son that I'm saving myself a whole thanksgiving pie for AFTER the wedding. :thumbsup2

Ditto what the others said. Hang in there and don't give up. You've come this far and the race is so close. Listen to your body and take walk breaks as needed. Even if you have to walk it/some of it/just FINISH IT. You'll be so proud of yourself.

"Anything worth having, is worth working for. HARD WORK PAYS OFF. Nobody said it was going to be easy, but it WILL BE WORTH IT." All of those phrases are what I play in my mind right now. This is go-time with 5 weeks to race day. It's time to dig down deep inside and stay focused, stay dedicated, and keep the course to the end. You can and will do it! That balance of body, mind, and spirit is something we all are on the same journey. Listen to your body - change/adapt, but never give up.

It all comes down to hard work, dedication, and perseverance. I also want to add that my hubby swears by the honey stingers. He had one on Friday during our 11 miles and he was literally clicking his heels down the street he felt so good. (I ordered the chews and can't wait until they arrive.)

Also, I had tummy issues after my 9.5 for the first time. Hydrating the day before helped. I didn't have a problem at all this time and I was really worried. Also, I've heard some people don't do well on those shot blocks. Maybe try something else for a while and see how it works out for you. Hope some of this helps. Good luck! :)

I live in Jax. Funny you found it hot and humid, as I thought it was much cooler than last several months.

Funny what we get accustomed too. I did 8 Friday night and that felt good.

Overall it is cooler than the last few months, for sure. It had just gotten cooler here in the past two weeks. Lows in the 60's with maybe a few upper 50's at night and days in the 70's with and hardly any humidity. We were happy to say "bye" to the hot Summer days, but were right back it this weekend. It was close to 90 and lows in the 70's in Jax and it's still too warm for my taste to run. I'm used to that weather, but he humidity in FL is always still stronger than here. Which is the case the farther South you go. People in Key West probably think it's "cool" in Jacksonville and so forth. :) It's true - it's all what we get used to. It didn't feel noticeably cooler until we were around Auburn. Tonight's low is 61 and mid 50's the rest of the week. Ahhhhhhh..............

I participated in my very first 10k event yesterday. Finished in 1:31:27 doing run/walk intervals (run 1/4 mile; walk 1/2 mile).

It was exhausting and WET, but I'm glad I got this in ahead of the half. There were SO MANY PEOPLE.

You have come too far to give up! Try different fuel/hydration options to see if that helps. I really like chocolate agave syrup packets. They are a slower burn energy (which works for my walk/run pace) but agree very well with my stomach.
For your long runs, you have put in the mileage - you don't have to do the 12 if you don't feel like that would be helpful. I usually max out at 10 for a half. (This year is different since this race is more than halfway through my marathon training plan.)
The other thing I like to treat myself to is new music for my running playlist.
Disney races can be so much fun and magic - just keep putting one foot in front of the other - you'll get there!

We'll be coming fro AZ (still in the 100s every day here!) and were wondering about what the temps are usually at WDW around the time of year when the 1/2 marathon will be.

We've done the marathon in January many times and have experienced temps from the extreme lows (2010!!!) to nice and warm.

But with this being a night race, and at a time of year we've never visited WDW, we were wondering if anyone had any suggestions about what kind of extra layers might be needed to stay comy before the race start. Extra tee shirt? Sweats or something heavy like that?

And don't get me started about what to wear during the days at the parks! We have no idea what to pack!
