Official 2012 Wine and Dine ½ Marathon Thread

I registered on the first day with an estimate of 2:45, my bib is 13150. Any idea what happened?

I have a 3:08 half with a 1:10 split. The split doesn't specify 10k but I hope it's enough proof.

How many people are registered?

I think they looked at your 3:08 and not your 2:45.

The 3:08 was recent. (an injury and a six mile hill killed the pace on the last half).

Signing up early has nothing to do with bib number imo.

I'm doing ok, thanks for asking! I did a very difficult 5 mile run last night. at 4 miles I was like, OMG, I will never get back up in mileage in time for the race, but I managed to finish it. My legs were so tired. I definitely didn't fuel enough, probably because I thought "oh it's just Five miles." Lesson learned. Today, my neck is a little sore though, but I don't know if it's from sitting all day yesterday at work or if it's from the run. The neuro doc I saw today told me that I was fit, active and strong, and I could run as long as it didn't cause me pain. Then he ordered an MRI that he says he can get approval for because he absolutely needs it to diagnose this long-term pain problem I've had. I have PT tomorrow. I'm going to see how I feel after that and after my "short" 3.5 run tomorrow night and I guess decide then whether I can go the distance this time, or throw in the towel and start focusing on say, the Princess Half.

About 3 years ago I was told that I had the start of arthritis as well. An amount that was "normal for my age" (i'm 34)??? I was dealing with major patellar tendonitis which then caused other leg problems. Aleve, taping, a brace, etc. all helped. Ironically, running now helps my knees, but I have learned that shortening and slowing my stride keeps my legs strong and my knees pain free. I also do my PT exercises faithfully to keep my quads strong. Strong quads and hips help your knees SO much. And if it hurts after a run, icing it helps too.

Thanks Fig!! I've been pretty diligent about working the quads (even while sitting at my desk:thumbsup2) and incorporating a little more yoga time into my program. I figure between the Contraption, meds, ice, and plain basic ignorance:hyper:, I'll get through it just fine.

On a side note, does it really matter what corral you start in? I mean you do have 13 miles to make time up, don't you? The only thing that annoys the you know what out of me is people who START the race walking and stay right in the middle. Wouldn't it be a little more polite to keep to the outside, at least for the frist few miles until things spread out a little? Just wondering...:confused3

Regarding corals - Basically, there's a few reasons people are interested.

First, if you start out in the last corral and you run or run/walk a very slow pace, you only have your own pace to get away from the sweepers who start the "sweeping clock" after the last coral. (I think). If you are worried about getting swept (as many new runners) are and are in the last coral (as many new runners are), that's a little race anxiety for us. People in the last corral may start as much as 20-25 minutes after the people in the first coral, and those coral A people have that much more time ahead of the sweepers. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Second, some people who are fast but have no proof of time to submit because they are new and are in a later coral might be concerned with getting around slower paced runners and walkers.

Third, everyone's training for months and weeks for this race. Waiting even that extra 20 minutes to start is just more waiting! I think we are all just ready to GO! :) Plus you know, there's that after party to get to!

Fourth, many runners are competitive people by nature so it's a point of personal pride i bet for many people of what corral they start in. And in general most people like the known vs. unknown and knowing what coral you start in is just that, information, which some find comforting.

Regarding the walkers moving to the side, I recently read a post by Coach (cewait) about tips and advice for the WDWM and other Dis races and one things he said was to watch out for the very far sides of the course as that is a place some faster runners do like to use to pass people. I didn't think of that. Which is why I'm referencing that post now - Coach had some great advice and I wish I could find that post because it was great for new racers like me.

Ours either but I'm 99% sure it'll be last one. Feel free to join the "end of the line" party taking place out by the Florida Turnpike!:rotfl2::rotfl::lmao:

I am unfamiliar with Florida's roads. Would that turnpike be before or after MCO? B/c I'm pretty sure that is where my coral is starting... :rotfl2:

JK. I think that no matter where we each start - we're all in this to have fun and we will! As much fun as toughing it out through a 2-3+ hour run can be, that is :lmao: At least there's a promise of beer and bling at the end, which is more than can be said for long training runs....

I entered 2:45 on my registration as well & got bib 7009 (pretty close) so I suspect that is the main factor in their placement. Based on my training runs I could probably complete it in 2:30 - 2:35 but its my first half, and its Disney, so I just want to enjoy myself and have enough fuel left in the tank to take in some of the after party too. And with a corral or 2 as buffer, I wont worry that I'll get a muscle cramp or something & get swept if I have to hobble through part of the race.

That is the main factor I am sure as well. From there on, it is probably random, almost like who gets picked next from the bingo bag.

I think all Disney races should be enjoyed. A friend ran this with me last year. We had two different goals. I wanted to have fun and enjoy the new course and improvements. He wanted to finish as fast as he could. Well he did. 1:35 or so. But he was miserable for a week and a half after.

Your bib number skews my estimate of 12,000. Did you register through runDisney direct? Are you part of a group? That may explain the jump.

Please excuse my editing your text, but this is what I keep telling myself from the moment I get to the warm up area until it gets draped on my neck 13.1 miles+ and many hours later.

For all intents and purposes, the Turnpike might as well be in the next county from the World...:rotfl::rotfl:

What are these "sweepers"? Sounds rather scary, like Storm Troopers or something...:scared1:

I originally wanted to run to beat my time of my first half (2:20), but since my hubby has a messed up foot and can't run as fast as he used to, AND, after reading all the runDisney FB posts with everyone saying to just enjoy the experience, I've decided we are going to stick together no matter what and have fun! We are SO not "serious runners", at least not for this event!:dance3: And don't kid yourself, I am all about this kind of bling!!::yes::

The sweepers are like the guys that follow ticker tape parades with brooms. They want to make sure the course is clear after a certain point. One must be maintaining the 16:00 mile that Disney requires to avoid being 'swept'. The sweepers don't start on the course until after the very last person in the last corral has started. The further up in corrals you are, the further you are from the sweepers and thereby giving you a little bit of a buffer zone.

Thanks so much for the runDisney 101 lesson Jean!:thanks: I was envisioning some kind of big street sweeper thing that would come along and suck up unsuspecting runners::scared1:We'll just have to make sure to speed the pace up a bit at the beginning to increase that buffer zone. So to all of you who may be walking and get run over by a patrotic princess running away, screaming at the top of her lungs...my apologies!!

Pardon me, but I AM a Stormtrooper (yes, I actually have armor and am a member of the 501st Legion). I don't sweep. I blast. Just thought I'd clear up the misconception. :rotfl2:

Considering they already have the outfits, this would be AWESOME if this is how Disney dressed the sweepers.

I would be willing to start at the back of a race just to see this. They could have so much fun with it.

As you go along the course, you will notice some Magic Express, Disney Cruise Line or that style of bus parked off to the side. These are hard sweep points, where you could be 'swept' off the course. Example: If you haven't cleared the parking lot at Animal Kingdom by the time Disney says you need to, they sort of say good try and usher you off to a bus and take you respectfully to the finish area.

I love the idea of storm trooper sweepers!

And I really appreciate the info about the buses and "hard sweep points." Any experienced W&Ders know where any more of those points usually are in the wine & dine? And does anyone have a recommendation of how early to arrive in order to get towards the front of a coral if say, you're in the last one.... ;)

Can't you just hear the uniform stomping of the storm troopers...coming up behind you...that'd be some good motivation to step it up -- hyperdrive here I come!

:rotfl: that reminds me of the Australian swimming coach who tossed a baby croc into the pool to "motivate" his team to improve their speed!

If there are Stormtrooper sweepers, I think I'd just stay with them the entire course. I've already finished 2 Disney 1/2 marathons so I know I can do it and I suspect that Stormtrooper sweepers would be insanely fun.

I share my next thoughts in the hopes that it will reassure those worried about the sweepers. During my first Disneyland 1/2 in 2011, I was in the last corral and at the 1/2 mile point, I had severe pain in my shins that felt like shin splints and serious pain in my thighs. I knew there was no way I could keep running another 1/2 mile, let alone 13. So I started to walk. At mile marker 1, they told us we were 1 minute ahead of pace. I worried about being able to maintain the pace for the whole course. But I had trained at 15 minutes per mile, so I just kept going never heard again about where I was in relation to the pace. I finished in 3:05.

For 2011, I was in the second to last corral which started about 5 minutes before the last corral. I had to make 1 bathroom stop which took about a minute off my time and spent about 10-12 minutes waiting for 2 character pictures. Prince Phillip and Princess Aurora in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle was about 2 minutes and Darth Vader with the Stormtroopers was about 10 minutes give or take. That 'character' mile took me roughly 20 minutes by the clock Disney placed at every mile marker. Not once did I hear them tell me I was in danger of being swept.

I just kept going at my pace and around mile 6 they told us we were 13 minutes ahead of the pace. I finished in 3:07 which included my restroom stop and character breaks, so in the last half of the course, I shaved another 10 minutes off of my time in an attempt to get in the 2nd to last corral I had requested when I signed up for the Wine & Dine 1/2.

Just remember to trust your training and run the race you set out to run. Take time to enjoy the experience.
