Taryn- that's great! Thanks for sharing your interval times. I am also doing Galloway and am very interested in what everyone else is doing for times and how that affects their pace.

Nikki

I also do the Galloway method and typically use a 2:1 interval. If I'm running a short distance 2-3 miles I sometimes will do a 3:1 or 5:1. I really do best though with the 2:1. My average pace is typically ~ 11:30 min/mi.

You guys are all inspiring me! My 1st Galloway book arrives next week. For now, I am focued on the C25K. Amazingly, I am so much slower when I run a lot during a "run". Usually I have running and walking, but the more running I do, the slower my overall minutes per mile.

I usually do 1:1 for short runs and average about 12mm. Long runs are 1:30/1 and we do true Galloway, so about 14-15mm (2 min slower than "race pace" + time for heat).

My last race (last weekend) averaged 13:22 and we kept 1:30/1 for the first 5 miles, 1/1 until mile 11, and walked most of the rest in. It was warm, humid, and *very* windy thanks to Irene.

To all who had bad runs recently - hang in there! It happens completely randomly sometimes. I remember one run, right before last year's princess, where I was going for 12. For some reason, miles 1 - TEN completely and totally sucked; I didn't hit any kind of groove until 11 & 12. I was mildly freaking out that I would bonk at the princess. I did the same distance the next weekend, same intervals, same route... perfectly fine. So just keep doing what you're doing - blow past the bad days. But don't just give up - if I had quit on that run early, I wouldn't have hit the decent last 2 miles and my confidence would have been totally shot. Unless you are sick or in real pain, I say press through as best you can and you will be that much more confident!

yes - so true.

last week, I tried to get in my long run before irene was supposed to hit us in the northeast. mentally - i was not there, i was obviously concerned about the storm hitting us. the humidity was absolutely ridiculous - almost 99% percent - and the air was just so thick, it was hard to breath just standing around, much less run. we just don't get weather like this up here..it was kinda freaking me out. i wanted to get in 12...i made it 7 before i was done. it started to pour right after anyways and the coaches in our group starting pulling us off the course anyways because of the impending storm.

this week i had 20 miles on my long run schedule...first time i tried to go this long since my first marathon last year. it was by far the strongest run i've done. meant to keep it at 40 seconds-1 minute slower than goal marathon pace, and ended up 30 seconds slower than marathon pace..and when I wanted to punch it in for the last mile, I ended up about 20 seconds *faster* than goal marathon pace.

if you have a bad run, accept it and move forward and onward. most training plans are built with the expectation that hardly anyone hits 100 percent of the runs, anyways! if you can hit 90%, you are in great shape.

I agree! There are times when I will just add more mileage one day and take it away on a day that I am not feeling great. No sense in wasting time on those days. I always train at a lower pace - 15 min./per mile on the treadmill - it is my contingency plan should I not be able to run I know that I can walk that pace. But, I have always improved significantly upon that pace when race day came around by doing the Galloway intervals. The most important run usually is the long run a few weeks before the race. That is one that I really do believe you want to push yourself on. You need to bank that time (unless you are injured) so you know what to expect and most of all, to test your will. Before I did any races, I always believed that it was all about the running/walking. But, I have learned that it is all about your will. The way you push yourself to keep going when it is too hot/too cold/you are tired/everyone else is going slow, etc.

That's the pace I really want to try and be at. I totally overdid it on Saturday--I did a 3/1 interval and was running at 6mph. I completely conked out at the one mile mark and felt really, really bad, probably the worst I have felt since beginning running and I have run that fast before.

At what mph do you run/walk at?

I have a hard time being consistent in my speed when I do intervals, especially outside. If I'm on the treadmill I usually do my running at a 7.5 and walking at a 4.1. I typically finish 3 miles in about 27 minutes doing that pace. Outside though my pace is all over the place. Sometimes my pace per mile is in the upper 9's, and sometimes it's in the 11's. I run a 4:1 run to walk ratio almost all the time. I have a garmin, but haven't programed it yet to beep at me when my pace is off. Typically on longer runs I take it a little slower during my running time, and on shorter runs I'm a little faster.

I do not think I'll ever be able to run a 7.5! That's awesome!

For those doing galloway, I trained with it and then used it for my 10K yesterday. I do 2:30/1 intervals through out my training runs. Yesterday I started out doing 2:30/1 intervals until mile 5 then I straight out ran the last 1.2 mile. I will say at first I was worried about walking portions espeically at the beginning but I felt GREAT that last mile and actually passed quite a few people that had been running the whole thing. I even felt great afterwards and could have gone longer. For me the intervals work b/c even when I hit a wall at 3miles I told me self I have 1 minute more until I can walk I can do that. It breaks it up for me so I feel like I can do it plus I get bored just straight out running.

Since I've been doing intervals for a few months, I pretty much know what I have to keep my pace at during walking and running times to keep my overall pace. I use my garmin to keep track of it. When I'm running I mark each run/walk section as a lap on my garmin so that's how I figured out how to keep my pace at a certain overall time.

Congrats to those who had a recent race!
My long run was much more pleasant than the week before- bout 10degrees cooler- finished almost 13 minutes faster with the same distance. My 11 yr old son and I are running a local 5k in two weeks- PR is to do it in under 30min. I've also registered for a 10K November 19- in St. Augustine , FL -we love going to St. Augustine so this was a great excuse to get my 10k in for a Time submittal( is that a word:rotfl:) -My son wants me to run a 5k with him Thanksgiving which is just 5 days after the 10k- hope I'm up to it- guess I'll have to use those races as my long and short runs for the week.

Have a good week ladies! See you at the Princess!princess:

Wendy & Heather -
I admire your endurance with the Galloway method! I started only four weeks ago and am up to 30 seconds/30 seconds with a 13:58 pace at 5 miles. My limit right now is my heart rate. Once I get past 174, I tend to pass out, so my Garmin comes in VERY handy with that.

I started off the plan, right from my couch, at 10 seconds/50 seconds, so that is progress for me. I'm content with my 30/30 and hope to build up my "power" to go past that. Dont worry, I'm under a Cardio's care. :thumbsup2
I think it's important to have goals in mind, yet know your body's limits--work with that and you can succeed! It may take baby steps, but self gatification is well worth it! I look forward to my runs!!

Kat,
I really appreciate your run reports because I am a true Gallowayer to just started running with a group a month ago and I am learning how to slow it down and run those true 13-14 min runs especially now that we are hitting the 8+ mile long runs. I have my first 10miler and I am :scared1::scared1:

My mom and I are going to run the 5k! We aren't runners and haven't exercised in a long time. We figured this would be a motivating event!!

We aren't sure where we are staying yet but we will be using DVC points!

My average speed tends to be around 5.5mph. That's taking into account the walking and running.

Now, when I run on the treadmill at home (and I'm pretty sure the distance is not very accurate with it) I set it to 3.5 mph walk and 4.7 mph run. So, it's slower than outside, but I feel like I'm working twice as hard and it's more difficult for some reason. :confused3

Exactly how I felt with my 10K! Great job!

You're doing great! And I totally agree about goals yet know your body's limits.

I did it! I just registered! I must be out of my mind.:scared1:

Welcome!!!

Guess what, this slacker got a run in today. 2 for 2 so far this week!

SAYSAY,

there is the CHOA strong legs run that will take place on Nov. 5th. I am considering doing this one as well for my final time to submit.

I am looking into that one! I need a november race other than the Marietta Gobble Jog.

Just hopping on quickly to say...woo hoo!
I did my long run yesterday and it was 5 miles. The most I've EVER done. I did it in 55 minutes, which is good for me. I'm using the Galloway method really like it. I'm using the 2:1 intervals, but think I can actually increase to 3:1. I felt great, and probably could have kept going!

It seems like the first mile to mile and a half are the toughest for me. My legs hurt! Yesterday they didn't hurt at all.

WAY TO GO! That is awesome. Love that walk break.

Taryn- that's great! Thanks for sharing your interval times. I am also doing Galloway and am very interested in what everyone else is doing for times and how that affects their pace.

Nikki

I do a 2/1 interval. My pace generally is 11-12min miles. I was thinking of uping to 3 minutes last year when I injured my foot....so word of caution for newbies....do not be so concerned with pace. Just focus on what you feel comfortable with and getting the training miles in.

When I run on the treadmill, have been doing 6mph run/4mph walk, though today I "only" did 5.5mph run. Felt funky and just wanted to get it done....hey some days you have to slack.

ON the treadmill.....6mph run, 4mph walk, though today, I kept the run at 5.5mph. When I am outside, I typically do between an 11 min mile pace and 13....kind of all over the place, but haven't been running over the summer consistantly.

YES! Its about getting the miles on your feet, not how fast you get there!

I totally agree.....the group runs here don't jive with my life right now, so on my own. THANKS for all your wisdom! I did a group years ago for my first 1/2 and I have to say, great program!
