Ran my first 5k today and it was awesome!!! I beat my own goal (my goal was 38 min) - I ran it in 36! I really focused on all the tips I received from this board - I did not run like a mad woman at the beginning but kept my pace ... and I had fun!!

I am definitely hooked, and really appreciate everyone's kind words and suggestions! Can't wait for the Princess (but am planning on doing some 5K and 10Ks in between!!!)!!!!:tink:

Nice work!!

Another question! :goodvibes

OK so when I've been running I sweat pretty hard - what do you all do to keep the sweat out of your eyes while running? It burned my eyes a little tonight, and I'm still doing the treadmill!

I always run in a sweat wicking hat. It def helps. Plus keeps sun out of eyes and a little protection to the face.

Congrats on your first 5k! I was totally hooked after my first race last may, and now 20 races later I still love the feeling of crossing the finish line!

Cool!!

There is a Raleigh Galloway training program, if you are at all interested in the Galloway method. It meets every Saturday at 7AM (6:30 in July and Aug) to do the weekly long run. Right now we are at 6 miles but will ramp up to 10 and stay there. There are about 450 members, and all pace group levels from 7min miles to 15 min miles.

Let me know if you are interested via PM and I will send you details! It really makes the miles go by faster to have friends with you. :goodvibes

Hey Girl- it would not let me PM you for some reason (I am new to boards, so that may be why). I would love to run in the group, but I cannot swing it at this time. But thank you for the invite! Have a great weekend.

Super pumped! Just got my official confirmation letter from DVC that we are booked for a split stay in a 2bedroom at Bay Lake Tower and a 2 bedroom savannah at Jambo at AK for the week after the race! Yippee! Airline tickets...check, hotel...check, ADR's written down....check.

Now all I need is to learn how to run past 4 miles! :rotfl2:
Hope you all are having a great weekend!

Since I'm on the subject... anyone from last year stay at BLT or CR the day of the race? How did you get to the race as well as how long was it to get back to the hotel after the race? I'm assuming take the monorail after?

thanks!

Good morning Princesses!! This morning I finally took my mad skills to the street lol, my first time running outside and I did well, but I need to slow myself down - ran 3 miles in about 35 min which is crazy for me - I know its regular for everyone else but for me that is really fast! But I'm proud of myself that I did this and I'm gonna keep it up :thumbsup2

Happy Memorial Day everyone :goodvibes

But if you were comfortable with that pace, then you're okay! All the articles I've read say that a great way to up your time is to just take one day a week where you do either a short run while giving it a lot of gas, or intervals - smaller distances full-out, walk 5 or so minutes, then go full-out again - about 3-5 times. They say that just doing that one day a week helps condition your muscles to going faster without wearing them out.
Congrats - you SHOULD feel proud of yourself!
:thumbsup2

Thank you!! OK I guess I will just keep running the pace I did this morning and see how I do!! This is all so new to me, I'm so happy for the family I have found on here to help all us newbies out!! Thank you thank you thank you!!!

I've never stayed at a monorail resort for a race, but I know they have them running in the morning before the race as well as after the race.

Hope you all are having a great weekend!

You'll get there, just gradually work your distance up. I tried to jump from a 5k distance to 5 miles without working my way up and about 4.5 miles in I started cramping so bad I literally couldn't run a step further. Also try slowing down your long runs a little, you'll be able to last longer. My pace from my best 1/2 is just over a minute slower than my pace from my best 5k.

A good rule of thumb is to increase your distance by only 10% at a time. I know that seems really slow, but it helps you get there without injury and with confidence!

Congrats! Sometimes you run faster than you think you can. Be proud! Its not about speed though, be proud you got outside and did it. :thumbsup2

What does everyone do about the heat??? I'm a NYer living right outside Houston (not used to the heat and humidity), and I just rain .... in 95 degrees. I can't run in the morning because I leave early for work, and it's hot even in the evening. Do you just acclimate to the heat ... or run on a treadmill (which would be a bummer because I just got off the treadmill and onto the road)????

Any suggestions would be welcome!!!

Hi all, I'm wondering about the monorail thing for the race too (thinking about trying to get BLT with DVC points). Also, anyone else planning on following Galloway's plan for the princess? I am going to work my way up to running a 10K in sept then follow his plan after that. Would love some company in the training plan! I am also loving using dailymile to keep up with princess runners (which I learned about here) and would love some more "friends" there. I am Michele S from Kalamazoo.

oh no, you never get used to it, at least I haven't...I've been here my entire life and I swear it gets worse every year...and running in it...it just plain stinks. Last year was my first year to run in this type of humidity and heat. My advice is to wear as little as possible, run in a shady place if possible and take plenty of fluid with you (and wear some sunscreen!)...and expect it to have a negative effect on your pace, but don't let it discourage you! I'm in the same boat as you...I leave super early for work so during the week, running in the morning is absolutely not an option. I do 4 and 5 miles twice a week after work in the hottest part of the day (and a boot camp once a week). Fortunately I'm a morning person and I only work mon-fri so I do my saturday long runs as soon as I see the tiniest bit of light outside to beat some of the heat. I got really discouraged last summer...all I could think was "who in their right mind decides to take up running in July in the south?" Eventually I learned to instead say "Just think how awesome it's going to feel in the Winter and If I can run in this, I can run in anything!" Of course, the treadmill is an option if you have access to one, but I personally don't care for running on a treadmill...I do it only if I have to like if it's flooding or something outside. Just remember the hard stuff is building your mental toughness along with your endurance!
