Official 2012 Princess 1/2 marathon thread part 2

It was 9 degrees heree in MN today! Ran 10 miles in just under 2 hours on the TM. Boring!

I am wondering if any of you use Gu & how often? I am planning to pack my own.

The weekend before the Tinkerbell, I had to run 12 miles on the treadmill.
I knew it was going to be a long haul, so I loaded up my ipad with movies and tv shows to keep me entertained. :cool1:

On my longer runs, say over 7 miles, I do use GU. It take it at about mile 8.
So I only take it once on the run.
Sometimes I run with swedish fish as well and much on them every mile or so.

On the Princess map it looks like they will be handing out Cliff product between miles 8 and 9.
I always bring the flavor of GU I like with me on the race because I don't want to try something new and they might not have the flavors I prefer.

2 weeks from today I'll be at the parks going on rides!!!

I am with the previous poster - try them out on a longer run first before you try to use them in a race. I've tried a lot of flavors and just can't get them down; the texture makes the gag reflex kicks in!! I pack 3 of the little square snickers bars (halloween size); usually only need one about 1/2 way through. Seems to be enough to get me over the "blahs".

Just noticed that runner tracking is up!
For those of you who don't know what this is........
You can sign up (for free) to have someone track your progress out on the course.
This is great if you have more people in your party, but you don't run together.
I use it to see when my sisters/neice are crossing the finish line so I know when to look for them at the end.

I used it at the Tinkerbell to see their progress because I brought signs and a cowbell and went back out on the course (after I was done) to cheer them on!

Here's some pictures of me with my signs!

I am a beginner runner and started testing GU, NUUN & Sport Beans during what was my longest run at the time - 6miles. The texture of GU was not fun at all, but I also didn't wash it down with water - mistake #1. Mistake #2 was taking it because I thought I needed vs actually needing it.

Fast forward a couple of months - still a beginner runner - but now with 2 13+ mile long runs in place. This is what I have used and what works for me because I get super hungry, tired and sometimes even bored after 45 minutes

  • 45min - 1 hr into the run: I take 1 GU Chocolate Outrage w/caffeine (tastes awesome – I promise!). I suck it down in portions and wash it back with plain water
  • 1 hour later I do another of the same – still washing back with regular water to get it down
  • When I’m done running I walk back home and at that time I eat those Jelly Belly Sport beans. They are yummy and you can prob eat those instead of the GU if you wanted
  • Throughout the run (but not while washing back the GU) I drink water with NUUN. It’s an electrolyte drink tab you drop in your water bottle. Comes in different flavors. Low cal and not as sugary as Gatorade or those types of drinks.

This is what works for me. I don't eat in the morning - I just drink coffee - so that could be why I need all of this. Also, I have been running when the sun is out and the temps are 60+ - also another reason I am hungry and thirsty. It doesn't hurt to go prepared into a long run with different things till you figure out what you need.

I have found on some days if I have a slice of wheat bread and 1 tablespoon of peanut butter with my coffee in the morning I have decent energy.

Oddly, I have NEVER had to potty during any long run even while taking all of this in. Maybe I'm not hydrated enough?

Does anyone know what waters/snacks/gels are offered by Disney on this course?

I think I might have actually seen you at the Tink with the last sign.

Anyway my last really long run, a 10 miler. I still have a 6 miler next week but this is the longest I've run and will run before the race. And I am being forced to run indoors. Weather for tomorrow isn't supposed to be too bad but I have to take a quiz for my class tomorrow which means I have to skip out on running with my training group. I feel kind of bad because I'm using the program but have had only one chance to run with them (Training on Saturday has went: Ran with them, Tink, BAD snow storm that caused them to push it back aday and me to run indoors, and now quiz). Oh well bar anything happening next week I'll be putting in my last long run in with them.

Discovered last night that I apparently need more tank tops. I know that makes no sense in context since I live in CO but they have the heat turned way up in the fitness center. Which is great when I walk in out of the cold not so great when I'm working out. I actually packed three bottles of water last night after the last four miler I did I downed 2 bottles and was needing a third. All while wearing a short sleeve shirt and pants. Last night I went and worked out in a tank top and shorts drank about a bottle and a quarter. So yeah no more working out in shirt and pants until they start turning the heat down.

Hi Ladies, For those of you who have spectators with you - I have my family signed up for the free cheer squad- bronze. Are your spectators going on the bus with you at 3;30? Are they planning on being at the start line or do they meet up with you at TTC or magic kingdom? I am so confused on what to do with my family and how to advise them! LOL!

Where in CO are you? I am in Arvada (NW of Denver)

Where in CO are you? I am in Arvada (NW of Denver)

I'm on the Golden/Lakewood (you drive five minutes either way and you end up in one of those two cities from my apartment, I'm technically in Golden but I say Lakewood because my brain doesn't really think of this as part of Golden) border just in the foothills of the mountains. I know where Arvada is considering to do just about half of the things I want to do I have to drive east I'm always passing through Arvada.

Does anyone know what waters/snacks/gels are offered by Disney on this course?

The have Cliff Shots for the gels and then water and Power Aid for the sports drink. I do the same thing where 45 mins take the first gel and then again around mile 9, both with water to wash it down. I use a power bar gel because it is what is easy available here. What I am going to do for the princess is just bring mine own because it is what I am use to and I can take it when I want. Figure it is better to take what I trained with.

Tomorrow I've got a nice 15 mile long run, and then I get to taper for The Princess. It's getting close!

I am doing a 1/2 on Sunday as my last long training run and then my taper begins. :)

Thanks Colleen!!! I am terrified!!!

Your doing the Ralston Creek Half I'm guessing (I looked up races out of curiosity, I honestly didn't think they had halves this early in the year I thought the earliest wasn't until March)? Best of luck with that! And remember are times going to improve when we drop elevation (twice I dropped in elevation pre long distance race twice I felt like I was on fire for at least 17 miles (the first time this happened was during a marathon, could not persuade self to slow down, not the best idea)) and with the fast course!

I am in Tampa for conference this.week so I got a nice practice flight to.Florida. I also went for 5 mile run yesterday here. Gosh, the weather was perfect! I hope it's this nice in a couple of weeks.

Pretty soon we will be able to start checking 10 day forecasts!

In case anyone is interested, this is a nice freebie that I came across at AllEarsdotnet:
-- Disney's Contemporary Resort is offering a free beer tasting on Saturdays at The Wave lounge. The tasting is from 3 to 4 p.m. and can be booked in advance by calling 7-1347 from Contemporary resort room phones. Other guests may inquire by calling the Contemporary Resort at 407-824-1000. This is open to all guests, not just those staying at the resort.

It doesn't fit into my family's schedule, but it might yours!

Good luck ladies! :cheer2:

I read on here that a few people have in the past and are planning to walk to the race start from the POFQ. My Mom and I would sure love to meet up with anybody doing that and walk over together! It's our first Princess Half - sooooo excited!

How far is it from POFQ?
