Official 2012 Princess 1/2 marathon thread part 2

I'm running solo as well (my first half too!) and would love to get together with some of you!

Hi, all... I haven't been here in quite a while. Unfortunately, my Disney Princess plans have been derailed, as tomorrow I'm having a double mastectomy. I had breast cancer 6 years ago, with a lumpectomy and radiation, and had no problems since then until December. Lumpectomy was an option again, as it's in the other breast, but radiation would definitely keep me from running. Looking over my shoulder for that Big C monster the rest of my life did not seem like an acceptable option, so tomorrow it's bye bye, tatas. I will be back to running ASAP - my doctor says as soon as a couple of weeks - but I'm too far behind on my training and there is probably a 10 percent chance of my being able to participate and not get swept. I haven't totally given up yet, and hubby is running it, so there will be bling in this house... just not mine.

It's been so much fun reading about you all and your training milestones, and I will continue to check in and keep up with the news. Best of luck to you ALL!!

Pattie

Oh Pattie.....hugs to you. Put up the brave fight princess!

Oh - odd, random thought. I know a few pages back there was some discussion regarding compression sleeves / socks / tights. I have a sleeve that I run with, and sometimes I keep it on afterwards (if it's not gross!). I haven't sprung for socks but am looking into it as my shins are obviously a recurring problem. But after yesterday's run, I showered and dressed in a pair of $5 leggings from Target. They are pretty tight-fitting - I mean, they're leggings, right? I realized this morning when I came down the stairs that even though I ran the day before, there was not a single twinge in my shin or tightness in my calf. I'm wondering - could it be possible that my cheap-o leggings actually helped like compression tights?!?! 'Cause that would be COOL!

:hug::hug: Will be thinking about you.

Amy, awesome idea!!

I was not solo, so I can't add much there. We have a large and rowdy group!

Race night she is absolutely right, sleep will be spotty. Be sure to get as good of a night's sleep as you can both Thursday and Friday nights - at least 8 hours.

Hydrate a TON on Friday and Saturday, but stop drinking around 8PM on Saturday night so you won't be up all night in the bathroom. Drink no more than 8-12 oz on Sunday morning before the race, and be sure to hit the port-a-potty before heading to the corrals.

Be sure and make a list of things that you need to bring with you and check off things as you pack them. We can start going over the list here in early Feb.

Most importantly, if you are flying, pack things that are not replaceable in your carry-on, like shoes and sports bra and whatever you wear on the bottom. Having to replace a tech shirt shouldn't be a big deal, but you don't want to try out newshoes, tights/shorts or bra on the day of a race.
I would also add, make sure you pack any electrolyes/gels, etc that you use. At w&d I forgot my endurolytes and there were none to be had at the expo. I could have tried something else, but with all the health/gluten issues I had last year I was very hesitant to try something new.

Also, I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but a good place to meet before and after the race is the "W" tent. If you are running solo, chances are there will be Wishers there before and afterwards. We met up with a bunch of people last year including a really nice girl--can't remember her name--who was running solo. She did the trip by herself and her fiance was deployed. Anyhow, we really enjoyed chatting with her and I think she enjoyed the company. I am sure I will be there stretching before and icing afterwards!:thumbsup2

Question--so is the facebook page open to everyone or is it a Wish/disboards page? I am guessing since it is so big it is open to everyone. thanks!:goodvibes

It's possible? I need to get those!

I have an active.com schwaggle deal for $25 compression socks and was considering it. You just reminded me. :)

Thank you for the tips. I have found myself reading everything I can about the race and watching all videos I can on it.

5) Potty stops - I thought there were plenty of opps for this, and I should know since I drank WAY too much water and had to pee every 5 minutes. If you are fussy about portas, you will go right by real restrooms in Tomorrowland. I saw some princesses head to the royal forest <ahem> last year, but my pride was larger than my relief needs to be doing that.:rotfl2:

I have learned the hard way that you can overhydrate. I had issues before I got on the Marta for the Peachtree, and more recently on an 11 mile training run. I'm not a fan of the forest but there is no restrooms on the portion of the trail I run.

Sending you hugs, good vibes and best wishes for a healthy recovery! Breast cancer has not been kind to my family and I understand your decision 100%.

I gave into those! Usually I'm pretty frugal, but I saw that e-mail today and within seconds was buying them. I hope they are good! They were out of XS socks (I have tiny feet..6.5), so I hope the S is tight enough. I've never worn compression socks, but the way everyone talks about them here--I can't wait to try them!

I'm so sorry...hang in there! My mother had breast cancer about 10 years ago - she opted to go for the lumpectomy, chemo and then radiation. she went from lying on the couch so sick from the chemo barely able to move to walking two full marathons and countless halves!

The princess half will always be there. Take care of your health first.

Hi everyone!

I can't possibly read through all the old posts from this thread and the previous Princess thread, but I am going to try to keep up with new posts now that I am speaking up. Actually I made a comment ages ago in the previous thread but its been long enough I wanted to reintroduce myself.

This will be my first Princess Half and my second Disney Half (ran the Wine & Dine in 2011 with a 2:28 finish). I am very excited!

My boyfriend of 1 year proposed to me Christmas day and we are getting married February 19th, so now this has also turned into our Honeymoon trip!!

I have a few questions:

1) I saw a commemorative necklace for sale on rundisney with no picture! I mean really, you can't sell jewelry to a chick without showing what it looks like. Anyone have any ideas?

2) DisneyBride'03 - thanks very much for the facebook link. I have requested to join! ... And just got accepted!!

3) With such an early start time, when does everyone have their last meal?

4) I am considering the race retreat? Any thoughts on a yay or nay for that extra cost?

5) I already bought the gold chear package for my honey. If I get the race retreat do you think I can upgrade him?

- Carey

congrats on the engagement! wait - you get to race on your honeymoon?! i'm jealous. i casually mentioned to the boyfriend about a couple who went to hawaii on their honeymoon and the husband ran the hawaii marathon while they were there, and i got the evil eye "don't even think about it' look. guess no honeymoon marathon for me :lmao:

i think the necklace is a new thing - but they are doing it for the tinkerbell half too, so we might get a sneak preview once their race weekend happens.

i usually do a 6 pm meal the night before. you can only go to bed so early the night before you know?

race retreat is your call, but I'm sure if you wanted to upgrade disney would have no issues taking more money from you :lmao:

Have you ladies thought about creating an additional Facebook group for those on here?

Pattie, I work for the American Cancer Society and will keep you in my thoughts tomorrow. Prayers for quick and total healing!

I am NOT afraid or too proud to use the forest. IF it's good enough for the dudes, it's good enough for me. I also over hydrated last year but that was in effort to NOT go into labor- lol. This year I will leave the belt at home and just drink at the water stops- should be plenty I think!

I hope the adage that the more expensive the hotel the less racers is true since I got bumped to the Poly! I was having day dreams of telling the CMs about how I was robbed of the chance to stay in the RGR and they felt so sorry that I didn't get the princess treatment they put me up in the Princess Suite at the Poly instead.... ahhhhh, dreams....

Pattie, my goodness! What a difficult and courageous decision! If that 10% chance comes to be, I will be high fiving you (though :worship: would be more appropriate) with huge respect. Please keep us posted, and good thoughts for an uncomplicated surgery and an easy recovery.

All the best to you, tomorrow... wishing you a quick & easy recovery. And don't forget that, if you were feeling up to it, you could always consider walking it... even if you get swept, you can still say that the C monster didn't stop you from starting.

I bought a pair of Zensah Compression Socks from Schwaggle for my DD. She wore them this past weekend for the WDW Marathon Relay and swears they were a life saver for her! In addition, I wore a pair of Zensah Compression Sleeves because I had been experiencing pain in my shins during training. I wore the sleeves for the first time during my half of the WDW Marathon Relay... No shin pain at all!!!

Soooo, my DD and I would say the compression socks/sleeves are highly recommended. I am purchasing a couple more with this Schwaggle Deal!

When I run, I constantly have to shake my hands out because I feel like my hands are swelling up. Does anyone here get that? If so, what do you think I"m doing wrong?

As much as I like the idea of compression socks, knee-high socks never fit properly on me since I'm so short (4'9"). I also buy boy's running shoes because they fit much better than women's. They're a little wider and not so long. Works for me!

I'll be thinking of you especially today Pattie. :grouphug: As others have said, there will always be other races. I hope your healing and recovery go smoothly and well, and whether you decide to try walking the Princess this time or stick with cheering your husband on this year and running another year, I'll be sending you lots of extra pixie dust either way.
