Official 2011 Wine & Dine Half and Relay Thread

Well, Disney would not let us switch from the half to the relay so now panic is starting to set in.

Ahhh! You can do it you can do it! We will all be so jacked up on pixie dust that it will be easy. At least that's what I'm telling myself. I'm hoping that staring in awe of the empty parks at night and looking at dancing characters will distract me from the thought of how many miles I have left or have already gone and the hours will just fly by...

If my short chubby little slow self can do it, I know you can.:cheer2:

You can do it! With all the characters and other participants cheering you on you can finish!

Hope you are right. The heat in Dallas has prevented me from running, or even walking, outside period. Our vacation to Europe really put me behind in training to begin with, sigh. With only 30 days left, I am not confident that there is enough pixie dust in the world to get me to 10 miles, let alone 13.

I understand! I'm trying to train in Houston, the weather has been horrible, over 100 everyday. I either have to train very early in the AM or very late at night. I did a 9 mile run last night at like 8pm and it killed me, I feel like i'm hungover today from running so late last night :)

Off topic, I'm coming to Dallas for the LSU-Oregon game this weekend, any food recommendations or places to visit??

For those that are doubting their ability to finish, allow me to share my story from last year. I was deployed to Djibouti, Africa (11 degrees north of the equator) for the 6 months, Feb through Aug, so training was most definitely NOT part of my plan. (Can you say over 100*F every day AND night?!) The longest I did run was a 10K in June, and after that was a couple of 5Ks and then maybe a couple 1.5 milers when I got back to FL. Basically, I ran the race 'cold'. I managed to get 10K through the race without stopping (except for a potty break - couldn't be helped!) and then ran/walked the rest of the way until mile 11 where I hit the "wall" and walked all the way to mile 12, and then ran the rest of the way until the end.

My point being that even without good 'training', you can still finish. However, you'll definitely feel it the next day - and maybe the next week - like I did. No regrets, though. :)

This year, I'm going to be a little better prepared, but I'm not psyching myself out. 16 min/mile is a pretty generous pace, especially if you're a run/walker. You ALL can do it!!!!

You'd be surprised what the rush of adrenaline on race day can do... I think you definitely have it in you! However, having doubts about my ability to finish as well, I know how you feel... and I keep repeating the WISH mantra... DLF > DNF > DNS!!! At least you are starting!! Most people don't even get the chance to say that! Good luck in the last few weeks of training!

The bags are at least the size of a plastic grocery store bag.

I check:
•crocs
•t-shirt
•diabetes stuff (insulin, glucometer, etc)
•baby wipes
•car keys

Everything except the crocs I put in a small back pack and then put that in the check bag, to keep things a little more organized and if something were to happen to my check bag (ie a hole or a tear) my stuff would be more or less together still.

I didnt think about putting a bag in the bag, thanks for the tip!

Megny is so right about the adrenaline.....all those runners around you is so exciting that it gets you going!

Side story, this year at the Princess Half I was as sick as sick can get. Woke up with a high high fever, chills, aches, you name it BUT I went to Disney to run this race (first time running a Disney Race). I was determined to do this.

Well I did end up runnig the race and finishing, I was miserable and in so much aches and pains, even one of the medics told me to lay down but I didn't, I'm stubborn.

Now I will tell everyone NOT to run so sick, it was a stupid mistake, I see that now. I got Trigeminal Neuralgia thanks to running a race so sick so I was ill for a few months after the race so DO NOT RUN SICK But my point to this is YOU CAN DO IT. Its amazing what you can do when you set your mind to it ;)

One thing about that adrenaline....don't let it overwhelm you and try going crazy. Run your race. If you're anticipating a 12 minute mile, don't let that rush of endorphins and energy let you start out by putting down 7s.

I ran into this during my last (ok, and first ;)) 10K. I was intending to just run 10 minute miles the whole way. My first mile split was sub 8. Even though I was feeling totally good with the pace, I calmed down, backed down, and ran the race I was intending to. Otherwise, I was probably heading for a bonk/crash.

I have to keep telling this to myself also. I am a run/walker, but when I ran my first 10K, everyone around me was running, so I ran for much much longer than I usually do before I finally started walking. I'm afraid I'll get so caught up in the moment at the starting line that I won't want to walk when I'm supposed to and get left behind, especially when I'll feel so pumped up that I feel like I could run way more. It's hard cause the whole point of run/walking is conserving your energy so you can make it the whole 13.1 miles.

From everything I can recall and can see on the map in the program, the finish is more likely to be in the overflow bus lot as opposed to Cast Member parking. CM parking is behind Test Track and Mexico. The overflow bus lot would be if you were to keep walking past the Disney resort buses, to the left as you exit the park. It would be no worse than walking to the back of the lot for your car, IMO.

Now, my memory isn't the best, but I keep thinking that there is a lot of greenery(shrubs, trees, etc.) to the left of the bus area. We generally stay in one of the value resorts, so of course, our parking is the furthest away from the front gate and nearest that area.

I think I'll look for an arial shot of Epcot later and see if I can see anything of that area. I'd hate to try walking that way and have to detour around a bunch of stuff. I'll be doing enough walking that week that I don't want to add any extra to it. lol

I think its kind of a bummer that the runners won't be running through Future world. I know my dh was looking forward to running through there.

It's kind of a bummer we aren't running through Epcot at all... It's by far my favorite park. DW has mentioned she loved running through World Showcase during the January events.

I wish the course had less Osceola Parkway, more Epcot. Two ~3 mile stretches of boring road are definitely going to drag compared to running in the parks, no matter how much entertainment, etc they have out there for us.

Because the park will be opened I doubt Disney would send runners through Epcot. Even the January events are scheduled to minimize the amount of time runners and guests are in the parks together. Add darkness to the equation and I can't really blame Run Disney for not running the race through Epcot at all.

I have to agree with Frank - the World Showcase prominade isn't THAT wide and RunDisney is smart to not have runners and spectators together at night time with wine involved. :)

Remember that we are running through the Boardwalk, which is right next to the International Gateway into EPCOT so any of anyone's individual cheering section could support their runner there, and then beat said runner into the park for the party. That's what I am going to suggest to my honey for a photo op and a chance for a hug. It's nearly the end of the race, but that's OK. I figure he can text me words of encouragement a few times prior to that if he wants. I probably won't want any other distractions during the main meaty section of the race anyway.

Chlorofiend - aren't you a runkeeper user? Why aren't we street team members? :)

I did a 12 mile run and I'm a little disappointed in my time, much slower than I want. My goal was to finish under 3 hours, but I'll be lucky to make 3:15:sad2:

Do those of you that use Runkeeper notice it ever being off? Saying you either ran faster or longer than you know you did?

I can't answer the Runkeeper question but keep in mind that the time you run on race day will almost certainly be faster than your fastest training run.

If I do a 3 mile training run at my fastest training pace it is still considerably slower than even the first 3 miles of a bad half. It is part atmosphere, part adrenaline, part mindset, and part God only knows what.

Sunshine - yes sometimes RunKeeper has a spaz attack and gets all confused with the GPS. Mostly, though, I find it to be pretty accurate.

I just finished my 7.5 mile route. That's four 7-8 mile runs within the last 10 days. I sort of slacked a little during August so I hope September is more like my usual "four runs every 7 days" regimen. At least I am at the point where nearly every run is either 7 or 8 miles, with only the occasional 4-6 miles and that's when I go to the gym for weights and swimming as well.

I wanted to share with everyone that I got a Runners Belt to put my Droid X in - for the last year and a half I have been holding it in my hand - and OMG did it make a nice difference! I have recently been averaging 11.5 or 12 minute miles, and today my average was 10.5! I know its because my hands were free and I could devote FULL FOCUS on running. My hands didn't swell as much either because I could move them around more freely. So if any of you run holding a phone or ipod or something - GET A BELT!!! It really helps!

My honey got it for me for my birthday. I turned 31 two days ago! :) I REALLY like it. As a side note, I am in the best shape of my life at 31 and I owe it nearly 100% to running. I love it! I am so excited about this half marathon and meeting you all and cheering each other on. I swear I am going to tackle any of you I see in a bear hug prior to the race, and probably after as well. So unless you are specifically wearing a shirt that says "don't hug me" - brace yourself. :)

LOVE TO EVERYONE!!! We can ALL do this!

 - Carey

I've only used runkeeper a couple of times and its been pretty off whenever I use it. My Garmin watch is much better at tracking my route and pace. When I've used both my garmin will say I've gone 5 miles while the runkeeper app will say 5.5 or even 6 :sad2: I've heard the gps on my phone could have interference from the case I use so maybe that's it? The app's inaccuracy is why I don't carry my phone with me too often but I would love if it worked right.

I just ordered a SpiBelt from runningwarehouse.com and I can't wait to try it out for holding my iPhone! At least then I'll have my phone with me if I need it for some reason. I've thought about getting an arm band to carry my phone too, that way I can use it as an iPod while on runs.

Only 2 long runs left for DH and I. The plan is to run 2.5 hours this weekend and next weekend which should be about 13 miles each run. Then we have a 10k race on 9/18 to hopefully give us a good qualifying time and move us up a corral (or two :goodvibes) for the half. I'm feeling like we're really ready for this :thumbsup2

I feel the same way. It was my goal to finish under 3 hours, but now that I'm doing longer practice runs and seeing how much I slow down as the miles increase, I think I'll be lucky to make it under 3:15. It doesn't help that my Nike+ is telling me I'm going way farther/faster than I actually am, so I have to keep telling myself that I'm not doing as well as I think I am :)

I wouldn't worry too much about your pace while you're training. You want your training pace to be slower so you don't put yourself at too much of a risk for injury. My training pace is always slower than what I can do in a race situation. At least for 5k's, when I try to run that distance all out while training I can always go faster in a race. There's just something about the race excitement and the energy from the other runners that helps you do things you never thought you could :rotfl:
