Official 2011 Princess Half Thread Part II!!!

Congrats on the last long run!
I have had the same problem with my shoes. I loosen the laces a little bit on top and have an arch support in my shoe. It lifts my foot slightly, and keeps the ankle away from the shoe. But then, I can't run super fast or my shoe will come off. I can't win.
Next run, I think I will try bandaids by my ankle, thicker wick away socks and tie the laces normally. Yeah, that's the ticket.

I love all the talk about the shirt and medal!!! I have been thinking and wondering all the same things. I hope the expo has some other Disney Princess shirts I can buy.

Is it a rubbing issue or a pressure issue? It wasn't really a rubbing/chaffing problem so much as it feels like I bruised something below my ankle.

The pain is no better today and I'm unable to walk (only limp) at this point. I don't know how I'll walk around Disney for a week let alone race. :sad1:

Oh my goodness! That sounds serious. So sorry to hear that it's worse than I thought. I did have a soreness inside my ankle joint once, but it went away. I had a light bruise. I think it happened when I turned around to look behind me, as I stomped down on my foot.

I have heard of moleskin, but never tried it, THANKS! :)

I've tried to post several times since Saurday but have hit one glitch after another  so this is waaay late, but I wanna share, so....

Did my final long-long run on Saturday. 13 again. It was not "easy," but I've completed 13 twice now, which is a big boost to me mentally. :cloud9:

I am (halfheartedly) kicking myself for deviating from the training plan on that last run (Hubby stayed home with our pup who'd just been spayed, so I was running alone and thought I'd run at "my" pace). So I ran above training pace and did 5 minute intervals (5 run, 1 walk) for most of the run.

I was afraid I'd wimp out if I lapped the lake (9 miles) and had to run 2 miles past the car to get up to 13, so I ran 6.5 out and back.

I was feeling the increased speed and intervals by mile 10. The last 1.25 wasn't pretty: definite leg fatigue, lots of walking interspersed with small spurts of halfhearted wogging. (Where's the wogging emoticon?? ;) )

So the lessons in this run: 1) Stick to the plan. 2) 7 weeks probably really wasn't enough time to train for a half (I already had a base of 6 miles, but....). 3) Stick to the plan. 4) I feel like I CAN finish, if I 5) Stick to the plan.

The knees ached at the end of the run, so I fully expect to be shufflin' through whatever park we visit post-Princess. (Sitting with knees bent in the car was worse than standing/walking, though. Odd to me.) And I am making sure to pack Tylenol. I took 2 after the run and they helped me get through the rest of long-run day. The next day the thighs were a bit sore but not enough to keep me from doing whatever I wanted to do.

I think if I had another 4 weeks I could probably finish the Princess "stronger," i.e with something left in the tank. But I'm pleased with my progress and I am giddy with excitement. :dance3:

Thank you, Princesses, for your encouragement, support, and for sharing yourselves on this board. I'm proud of you! I'll be cheering for you all.

We are princesses, watch us sparkle! princess:

Random packing tip: I made a note to myself at Hubby's marathon to bring along an ultrafine marker to all future races.

Sharing that, in case, it's helpful to anyone else. (You have to write name and contact info on timing tags, bibs, etc.)

Anybody have any packing tips?

Travel Tip:

If you're flying pack your running shoes in your carry on. IF the airline loses your luggage you can buy clothes if needed, but you can't break in a pair of running shoes before the race.

Thanks hvivona! :thumbsup2 I was so paranoid about this on my quickie recon trip last weekend that I carried BOTH pairs of my Brooks race shoes on board with me.

Princesses, This may be of some interest...I use this all of the time to resort hop when I don't feel like walking. I'm guessing the buses will now bring you to the front of EPCOT - so unless you walk, no World Showcase shortcut!
Friendship Boats to Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and resorts in that area will not be available 2/14/2011- 3/10/2011. Disney is providing bus transportation to Disney's Hollywood Studios from the resort bus stop.
Thanks for the tip marathonmommy. They must have changed the dates on this because on 2/14/11 I was on the Friendship Boats to Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and resorts. The boats ran all day and night long.

I hope they make an exception and have them running again during the race weekend. It's so much nice than buses.

Hey you! Take a good look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself what a rock-star you are!! I am 153 and hoping, hoping, hoping to be in the 140's before I got on that plane. But here I sit at 153 with 7 days to go. Remember that your body is strong and powerful and housed a human being inside it. Watch the biggest loser and realize that you are someone else's "After" sooo many people dream about being in their 140's and you're there! And you're not some mall-walking trophy girl either, you're a marathon runner!!!

 thanks! you're right, i should give myself a break. i've always had a hard time with my weight. i've had issues with insulin resistance and am on diabetes medication so my weight is really hard to manage.

but you're right - i gave birth! some things are just going to remain low and saggy! (ie, my b**bs) lol!!

*********************

yesterday i did my short run. it was really windy out and kind of cold. but i finished my 4 miles and looked at my iphone app and saw that i did it running a pace of 9:55 min/mile! wow! that's like the FASTEST i've ever run! my long runs tend to be about 11-12 min/miles. it's nice to see a little improvement leading up to the race, even if i did feel like crappola while i was running.

Anyone else trying to pack for the whole weekend in carry-on bags? I'm flying SW on the way down, but Delta on the way back. I can check a bag going, but coming home I'll have to pay to check a bag:headache:

Merci-thanks for the pedicure advice. As I am already super paranoid about blisters, I will be skipping the pedicure. Maybe just a polish change.

JDruns - thanks for the packing advice. I didn't know about the pen. As far as "having something left" you can just look at it as leaving it all on the race course.

I will be packing a plastic bag in my tight pocket to hold snacks and drinks that I get at the end of the race. That way they won't be in any of the pictures I take. I can set them down.

Also I will be bringing 3 bondibands. I must "glisten" more than most princesses because I totally soak through 1 in about 5 miles. Luckily I ordered 5. :goodvibes

I 2nd the running shoes in carry on bag. I would also pack your race day socks, race outfit and anything that you have road tested in your carry on. Having to buy new tights/shorts/skirt/socks that you aren't familiar with could really chafe you (literally) at mile 10ish.

Make sure to pack the following, ignoring things you don't normally wear of course!:
Shoes
Race Outfit
Throwaway sweatshirt/pants/blanket
Cheap throwaway gloves/hand warmers
Sunscreen
Hat/Visor/Bondi Band/hair ties
Running belt
Race fuel - sports beans, gus, etc.
Body Glide (or equivalent)
Bandaids/blister block/moleskin
Advil/Tylenol/Aleve
Ziplock baggies for ice packs

me! i am definitely not checking a bag. i'll be there fri-sun so it's totally doable for me. i'm just going to bring a backpack! that'll fit a pair of jeans, running tights, sports bra, undies, socks, crocs, couple of shirts, toiletries, running belt, etc. think that should do it! i'll probably wind up also taking a big bag of goodies with me that i'll be buying over the weekend!!

I need to share a triumph. I have lost 100 pounds in the last 6 months. :cool1:I had gastric bypass surgery 6 months ago, but I totally give credit to training and to the inspiration you ladies have given me. I say this because my surgeon said that that is the fastest she has ever had someone lose that much weight (who works nights). Before I had the surgery I met with a physical therapist who suggested that I take up running. Specifically in races and endurance. I laughed out loud. I couldn't even imagine it. 2 bum knees and arthritus in both. So after I had the surgery and I found myself sitting on the couch still I had to ask myself what would I run for. Well, I used to run for food, that was out. But I also remember running for Disney. No where elese would I put in 3-5 miles in a day (and that seemed like a lot).

Well, there is my story. It seems a little shallow compared to the amazing stories that honor your friends and love ones. But I am learning to honor myself. We are all so much stronger, more couragous, and beautiful because of the time that we have spent getting ready for this race. The scale does not matter compared to the changes that we have made in our spirit.

So I thank you all. These boards have gotten me off my butt and encouraged me when I had a bad run or even worse no run at all. :scared1: I thank you all for your advice and your stories.

um shallow, I THINK NOT. Way to go congrats!

My dad lost 100lbs one year and he took up walking. He walked every morning and kept it up until he passed away 2 years ago in his 80's. He never gained the weight back either, thanks to his healthier lifestyle including exercise.

Be proud of your self.

Although not going carry on only, I am greatly reducing the amount that I normally pack. I, too, usually fly SouthWest. This time we are going Airtran. I usually have 2 checked bags, my carry on and personal item--for me solo. Somehow with two of us going, we are going to try 1 checked and two carry ons. Hope it all fits on the way home!

Oh and I will echo the be sure to take whatever you NEED for the race in your carry on. I roll up my race clothes and put them in a bag in my shoes along with my socks. The TSA agents always give me a weird look when they see shoes and vinylmations.:3dglasses:3dglasses

I always try not to check, but this time I might. I have to carry the 8 race shirts for my team, and I am not sure I can fit that in addition to Thurs-Tues clothes, race outfit, shoes, etc., esp if the weather is variable.

I am not going to start thinking about it until early next week when the weather forecasts have stabilized.

And accuweather is painting a pretty warm picture if it holds. Especially for those that take a little long to complete the race. That sun could get warm fast.
