I would love to bring DD almost 6, but I don't know who would watch her either. I am loving the idea of going alone. ME time for 3 days!!! :yay:

On the Gu, when do you start to use it? I as of now, I have not used anything yet. No Gu, no beans. I am up to 4.5 miles.
(I must add, I have not done anything in 4 days:sad2: )

General rules of thumb

  • You do not need a supplement (I will use the term gel but is applies to all forms of nutrition – blocks, beans, etc) on runs shorter than 90 minutes.
  • If you are on a run that will last that long then take your first gel at around 45 minutes
  • Then gel every 30 minutes after that.
  • The time guidelines are used instead of distances as you can work as hard as I am running 16 minute miles while I am at 9 minute miles. For a run of 8 miles the 9 minute runner would not need a gel while the 16 minute runner would since they are out longer than 90 minutes
  • Since the times are guidelines they should only be considered starting points. You may find that you do not need or want to take your first gel until 60 minutes into a run or you may determine that the first one should come at 30 minutes. The normal range for the first gel is 30-60 minutes
  • Also you may find that you need to re-gel between 30 and 60 minutes. It is how you and your body react to a gel
  • Take a gel with water. The process is simple; take a sip, take the gel and finish the cup of water. You may find that you need two cups or that you do not need the first sip. YMMV.
  • Do not take a sport drink at the same time you take your gel. That can lead to GI overload resulting in a lump in the belly to worse.
  • Look at the race course and where the aid stations are. I think (and could be off since I am not looking at the map) that aid stations are located at mile 1.5, 3.5 and 5. If you are on a 15 minute pace in the race and your first gel is at 45 minutes you would most likely take your first gel at the mile 3.5 aid station. - train so your needs grow accustomed to the race you are planning to run.
  • What if you cannot take a full gel at once? This is not uncommon and a really cool trick is to take half a gel at the stop you would normally take a gel at. Then roll the top of the gel over to keep it from oozing out. Run to the next stop and then take the remaining gel.

Finally, remember we all an experiment of one. What works for me may not work for you. The guidelines above are norms that I would discuss and attempt to practice if you were running in one of my training groups.

cantwait - i like the way you think! i was getting a little bummed that dh and my little guy won't be there to cheer me on. BUT, at the same time, i haven't been away from my son for more than 7 hours...EVER so it might be nice to have a little break :) if i wasn't already spending a small fortune to get down there for a race i would get myself a massage at the spa!

i'd like to also know about the gu. it too haven't used anything yet but am also only up to 3-4 miles (week 2 on Hal Higdon's plan). i haven't started bringing water with me. in fact, i've been feeling better on my runs where i don't eat anything (other than my cup of coffee) than when i eat breakfast. i know that's not going to cut it as i get into the higher miles though.

I have another trick with this... I can't take a full gel at once, so I put mine in a snack-sized ziploc bag as to not get my fuel belt pouch messy.

While part of me is happy DH and DD4 are coming, I also kind of wish I could do this alone. So I think it's great you are getting time just for you for three days.
Thanks everyone for the gel advice. And don't worry- I haven't done anything in the last 4 days either. I did something to my knees and shins when running over the weekend and they have been hurting. So it's been rest and ice since monday and will probably start back up on Friday.

You should get youself a massage at the spa. It may feel really great after all of that crazy running we are doing!

I am the same way with eating before a run. I am also at 3-4 miles and when I eat something I worse than when I don't. At what point are you going to start eating before a run ( I need to get some ideas for myself as well)

Thanks for the info Coach.
My long run was 62 mins. And I did notice that I was starting to get very hungry. (I to do not eat before an early morning run) So I had come gatoraid during my run.

I have 1 more question..ok, maybe 2 more..
At the store today I found Gatoraid Prime Pre Game Fuel its in a 4oz pouch.
Can you tell me more about that?

I have read alot about chocolate milk for after a run. I just want to make sure I have this right. I am to drink a glass of chocolate milk after a run before I shower or eat? And that helps you not eat as much? Recover Faster?

Thanks Everyone for all your advise.

Oh, and about going without DD's. We are going to take them in the fall 2012. I know I will be sad at first to walk down main street without my girls. But as scary as it is. This is for me and only me, and I have to do it for myself. I have to know if I can. (right now I am not so sure)
My girls know that their trip will be when my little one is 5 and that this is mommy's trip and mommy will be bring home TONS for princess gifts.

:cheer2:

That's awesome.

We're on the same schedule!! Except I was supposed to do Week6/Day 2 today, but with the kids starting back to school-- and a new one at that-- this week's schedule has kicked my backside, big time! I'm taking tomorrow off work as is my tradition on the first day of school, so once they're in their classrooms, I'm planning on some quality me time on the treadmill!

Once I run my first 5K in the Magic Kingdom on 10/2, I' too will begin the run/walk M4M with my eye on doing the Princess Half. Can't wait! If anyone would have told me only 3 mos ago that I a) would run a continuous 2 miles without being chased and/or collapsing, and b) would look forward to doing even more, I would have had laughed myself silly! :rotfl2:

Here's to a great training week!

You're my running twin :)
I did Week 6, Day 2 just now and it was awesome. I did it on concrete w/ some inclines but at least today was 10 degrees cooler than previous days.
Oh how I wish I could do the 10/2 5K :sad1:
I feel the exact same way about running BTW. I am amazing myself, which is a pretty great feeling :cheer2:

I feel the same way! My daughter is older but I'm not leaving her on the sidelines :rotfl: I'm thinking of going alone princess:

I never do anything alone, I don't even get to go potty alone. :rotfl2:
I am with my kids or at work. or I am working from home with my kids.
Even when I run, my other DD is with me on her bike or I am on the treadmill.
Today I did 2.5 mile walk pushing DD who's 3 in the stroller (not a jogging stroller)

Again, I can't lie and not say that this is TOTALY out of my comfort zone. But I am SOOOOOOOOOOOO Looking forward to it.

6 months from today til I am there!!

This is so me. But, I'm taking this trip alone and I'm going to suck every bit of enjoyment I can out of it! I'll probably be lonely by the end, but I have plans to make this the greatest solo trip ever!

People go to the potty alone? I vaguely remember such a world... :lmao:

Good for you!!!! I just got back from a girls trip to Napa. For four days- no husband and no kids. It was wonderful, but I was starting to miss them towards the end.

And then I got home and reality set back in.

I just wanted to say our rooms booked for the race (CBR). I am sooo excited! :cool1: woo hoo!!! The family is taking a little weekend trip to Disney on the 16th next month. Excited about that too! I love Disney!

So I thought I'd finally just pop in here and say hi! I registered for the race the day it opened but I've been slow to get on this thread. My travel plans are up in the air as of right now while I wait to see if my family wants to go down or not.

I ran the Tower of Terror all three years and fell in love with Disney races. I'm looking forward to running in a park other then MGM. Oh and maybe I love the Disney bling too so there's always that.

I can't wait for this race!

I drink chocolate milk after my runs. I read that studies indicate it has the optimal ratio of carbohydrates to protein to help refuel tired muscles and supposedly the sugars in chocolate milk can be better absorbed by the gut.

I drink it because:
It doesn't cause the heartburn for me that sports drinks can.
It satiates the hunger I typically feel a few hours later.
It's a third of the cost of sports drinks.
It's chocolate!

Yes, you should drink it within an hour of your workout.

We will have to meet up. Yes this is going to be the best solo trip ever!! Hey we are with Mickey and 15K other woman!!!!

Thank you for the info, I did get some at the store yesterday. And I will try it, but I Ummm..... Have to work out first HA HA HA HA :rotfl2:
(It's been a bad week for me, DD's started Pre School and K and I am all in a funk)

Hi Meg!!!

Hi Jo!

I mean to comment on the chocolate milk. I don't always do it but yes, sometimes I drink chocolate milk after a run. It does take the edge off if I'm hungry and it satisfies my sweet tooth at the same time. If I drink it I do so right after my run before I do anything else.

I admire all of you who can go down and stay alone. If my family doesn't come down with me I'll have to consider dragging a friend down with me because the idea of being in a hotel room alone just doesn't work for me.

really? i love the idea of being alone! if anything, it means you won't have to worry about anyone else keeping me up the night of the race with their SNORING! lol!

i traveled alot for business before my son and really relished some alone time.
****

today is my rest day. woot! i need it because like i said i have AF for the first time since before i was preggo and i'm in alot of pain. definitely not wanting to run today. i will however go on a walk with my son today just to get out since it's actually nice out today!!

i love all this chocolate milk talk! the fact that it tastes good and i already have the ingredients makes it very appealing to me.

I was wondering what you use to put the chocolate flavor in the milk? I like Ovaltine but is that ok? My favorite post workout snack is an apple with peanut butter spread on it.

I've really got to try the chocolate milk. Milk in general seems to satisfy my hunger and I hardly ever drink chocolate milk - too many calories. But now that I am running, yea!! I can have some without guilt!

I went last year for the Royal Family 5K by myself. I was a complete newbie - I had started running about 6-7 weeks earlier. It was my first race ever! I had a really nice time being there solo! I love being at Disney with my family, but it was fun to be there and get to do whatever I wanted to, on my own schedule. :)
