At the risk of sounding prudish...

I guess I'm glad I don't drink! :rotfl:

Now, chocolate is a whole other thing!

Me too, on all points. :) I drink, but very rarely, like maybe once or twice every year or 2.
On the other hand I wish I could find an easy fix to weight loss. I only drink water, milk and now a sports drink like Powerade zero or G2 on running days. I eat lean meat like boneless skinless chicken breast about 70 to 80% of the time for dinner. Only get lean cuts of meat if I get anything else, only have red meat a couple times a month, eat whole grains and all that good stuff and I can not seem to lose a single pound. In the last year I have only lost 10 pounds and most of that was about a year ago and was *baby weight*. Since then it doesn't seem to matter what I do, how much I work out, I can't lose any more, and no I am not skinny. In fact I am boarderline overweight according to BMI, so I should have more left to lose, it just wont budge.

let me take the dash out

***********

I assume this is the result of being censored

 I already did that (then deleted it in an edit).

I can't for the life of me figure out why!! :confused3

Yes, I am strange.

Back to the topic at hand. I am about to try a short run and see how it goes, with the shins. I got the compression sleeves last night but unfortunately had to return them to running warehouse because they are too big. I assume compression sleeves are supposed to be tight. :)

First unless you are working for the Federal Health Department don't worry about BMI all that much. Frankly the number is one of thos dirty and quick values that once taken out of the small statistacal sample - simple does not work.

You think this guy is over weight?

http://blogs.dallasobserver.com/unfairpark/2007/08/practice_makes_perfect.php?print=true

T-O's BMI as of the start of training camp is 28.1 - mid-range over weight. Not hardly

Lance Armstrong's BMI 24.9 - Just almost overweight

Think this guy is obese?

http://redriverautographs.wordpress.com/2009/01/13/dwayne-the-rock-johnson/

The Rock's BMI is 30. - Obese.... Juiced - yes Obese - no.

The point is that the number means little

So getting back ....

I am sure you are on this but hopefully you are loading up on fresh veggies, also. Portioning is always tricky but it sounds like you probably have a handle on that. One of the gotcha's is processed foods. We attempt to avoid anything in a box. - Real general things to think of and there are several more.

From an exercise side...

You are doing strength work, right? I cannot emphasize how important pushing metal around is to shedding pounds. You will not bulk up - only firm up... you may start to look muscular if you push body fat down. The more muscle you can add to higher the metabolism and the more Kcal you assume 24-7. Mix things up… If you work squats, leg curls, leg extensions, back, shoulders triceps and biceps in the same order week after week your body will adapt and little gains will be seen. Also, if you are at a club and working exclusively on machines – stop and add free weights to the regime. Don’t worry about the over grown boys, they are trying to empress one another and may not even notice you in the 5-20 pound dumbbell section. Try concentration workouts. Focus one day on legs, one on chast/back and a third on arms/shoulders. No gym membership. Get to Taget, walmart and find a set of exercise bands. They really work wonders. It’s a little trickier to get the correct weight but once you figure them out they will work you just as hard as weights. There are lots of ways to mix up the workout

I am sure you are getting in cardio. Though I would suggest considering adding various forms of x-training. You can walk, bike, swim, row, mow – anything that gets you to the point where you can only say a few words per breath.

Rest – this is often an overlooked day. You do need at least one day a week where rest is the focus. Actually, strength gains do not come from the work one does – it happens during the recovery from that work.

Hope this helps

Can you do Shots?? :rotfl2: if you chase it with a glass of water?

Tequila anyone??? :goodvibes
Lots of time for catching up tonight... off work and today's rest day. Yay for rest day. It's been a month since I've put my daughter to bed and didn't jump on the treadmill. Feels weird.

I vote for going to Tequila bar in Mexico instead of Jellyrolls after the race. Although I will be too tired after getting up at 3am to drink anyway. I'll be sloppy before the first drink!

I must admit between breastfeeding for almost 13 months and not drinking because of it I maintained my pre-pregnancy weight once i reached it. BUT once I started drinking more freely when Mackenzie turned 1... WOW did the weight stick better. I got up to an all-time high (with during pregnancy exception) just by drinking more. Now by cutting it out I've lost weight with the right number of carbs, better water intake and decreasing my soda. I wasn't bad with my soda but I was drinking 24 oz of diet coke per day. I'm down to one of those 16.9 oz bottles. I can't quit cold turkey because i get so TIRED and migraines.

Speaking of..... anyone read any articles about diet coke lately? There's a study that suggests diet coke may be worse for diabetics than coke or coke zero because the chemicals in it will make your body drop sugar (even if not diabetic). Also, aspartame (the sweetener in diet coke) when metabolized by the body turns to a small percentage or formaldehyde. :scared1: (sp?) Sorry to get on to that tangent, but I found it interesting enough that I bought coke zero from the grocery store this week.

SSR Dec. 5th - 11th! awesome! we should meet up! dh is actually starting a new job in october so there's a chance that he won't be able to go on this vacation :( after all, we have a disney trip planned for dec AND jan as well as a maui trip planned in may (this is a rare occurrence people, we don't usually vacation this much!!) so he thinks it might be weird to ask for so much time off.

anyway, so i might be doing the december trip on my own with my boy who will be 17 months while there. starting to wonder if i'm crazy about this. probably won't get a run in since i won't bring my heavy jogger to disney with me.

sorry, rambling....your split stay sounds great!

Bless you for taking your son by yourself. That is impressive! We'll be there with DH's parents, sister her husband and their daughter who is 3 weeks older than our daughter. I'm concerned being there with two kids that are going to be 17 months. But I at least have back-up! (The back-up may at times be the problem) I'd love to meet up. I definitely don't see having a jogging stroller down there as an advantage, especially if you're alone. We took ours with in March as well as our lighter stroller. Our jogger was nice since we were at Bay Lake and could walk to MK but for anywhere we were bussing it, the light stroller was out.

whoops - all this talk about food and booze and i just had two glorious beers with my huge italian meal out with my aunt and uncle tonight!

must. run. tomorrow. :)

 I will raise a glass to you! I am not practicing what I preach lately.

I did manage to get in a run tonight, 2.25 miles. My shin seems okay so I am going to attempt the 10 miler on Sat, but with a slower pace group.

Thanks for all this great info! Can you offer any suggestions or tips on breathing techniques while running? I'm still pretty new to the running thing and this seems to be the most frustrating thing for me. :headache: I have a hunch some of the problem could be the ridiculous heat and humidity, but during the week, running outside right after work is my only option so I'm pushing through it...it's just so frustrating when I feel like I already need to get in a walk break half way through the first mile because I can't seem to get a deep breath. I'm fairly young (33) still, and have never smoked so I'm pretty sure I have healthy lungs...I hope! So, wondering if this is something that will just get better as my training progresses...if there's anything else I can do to help that process along, etc? Also, I always hear that you should inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth...when I've tried this, I feel like it's worse!! I appreciate your advice!

I read that it is best to breath in and out through your mouth. Sure, it doesn't look glamorous but it has worked better for me. I seem to keep a certain rhythm with my breathing too. If I keep everything constant, it seems to benefit me, but when I lose that rhythm, I can really tell the difference. I try to focus the most on my breathing at this point.

Yay me!! No brewski's last night!!!! One down with many more to go LOL.

I had a 7 mile Tempo run that turned into an Easy run last night as my legs were not up to the rigors of the tempo. I listened and adjusted accordingly. It was HOT with awful dewpoints and heat index. Today I have an Easy 3 mile recovery run, day off from any form of exercise tomorrow and then my 11 mile Long run Sunday. My first HM is 5 weeks from Sunday. I will be ready to let 'er rip by then!!

Good luck on your run this weekend. My first HM is 4 weeks from Sunday, and then W&D two weeks after that. I have a 5k race and a 10 mi race this weekend. Not sure how much sleep I'm gonna get, ha.

Aiming at an 11 mi LR next weekend, then 12 Labor Day weekend, back to 10 the weekend after that, and then the Philly RnR!

The first rule for breathing is to make sure the upper body is relaxed. Carry yourself from your core head up, shoulders back and relaxed, hands un-clinched, chest up and face relaxed. You should be breathing from the diaphragm, not the chest. A cleansing deep breath every so often will assure this. If you need a cue try breathing in for 2 steps and exhaling for 2 steps; again deep belly breaths.

When running long or a non-intense effort you should be conversational. It may require a breath in midsentence when normally you would not but if you were running with a friend you should be able to talk about anything for most of the time. The heat this time of year may cause you to need to slow up a little to maintain this.

As far as the mechanism of nose or mouth or both let me put it this way. If you are running conversationally, you should be able to nose breath. Not you must but a good measure of being aerobic besides conversational is the ability to nose breathe…. Looking from the other side an indicator of anaerobic work is the involuntary dropping of the jaw to allow even more air into the lungs. When running in an anaerobic condition there is no way to say more than 1-2 words per breath and your jaw drops open to increase the volume coming in. All this just to give a background for the breath in through your nose cue. Do not worry about this. Do what is natural. Most runners tend to breathe through both nose and mouth. Many could not breath in through the nose no matter. As the air speed increases it chills as it passes through the narrow openings of the nose. This chill can create a histamine effect resulting in a slight running of the nose.

Go out next time with a great running posture, slow it up just a bit and take in a couple deep belly breathes every so often. Make sure you are not tensing up and just keep you mind and thoughts clear.

Maybe we should get the local group together for a local 5-10k.

Thanks... trying to get all the good running in before the school year starts and the weather is crappy.

Oh I know! You guys were hammered last winter, weren't you? I ran all winter long here in western Illinois and I loved it! At times it was like running in a snow globe (Disney snow globe of course LOL) and was so peaceful. Not onve did I ever get the dreaded winter cabin fever.

We had a few blizzards, yeah. And the gyms here often have a 30 minute time limit on the TM during “rush hour”, so that doesn’t do me much good for a long run. Hopefully this year will be drier. I don’t mind running in the cold, but I do mind slush.

Major Right Knee Pain

I did 3 miles on Monday with my run club on sidewalks. Then yesterday my knee felt tight. By the end of the day it went from tight to pain. I can walk. But I can not do stairs. It feels like its pulling.

I did not do any workout yesterday and today is to be crosstrain/weights
and 4 miles on Saturday.

How to I stop the pain?

This Sucks

Where in IL are you?

Been off for a few days & came back to 10 more page!Wow! You guys are all so inspiring!
I am coming in on Friday with a group of women form my town - we all have kids in school together. They are all so inspiring. Two of them did the Half Marathon this past January at WDW. One is hoping to do the race in her wheelchair. Another one ran her first marathon last month in San Francisco.
We are staying at Kidani Village at Animal Kingdom - I own DVC so it was cheaper for me to use my points. We are leaving on the Tuesday becaue the airfare was cheaper to leave then!
We walk/run almost every day- we all vary when our rest days are.
I am starting to get so pumped listening to everyone!

Some thoughts though on what everyone uses for nutrition? I am not a snack person but I know I am going to need something to nibble on while running - what can anyone suggest? I am allergic to dairy so it had to be dairy-free.
Thanks!
