I'm not normally a correspondant here on the DIS but with this thread and the Florida Gators coming to town, I had to step up. TCD would expect no less. I've been going to Alabama games for over 30 years; Tuscaloosa I consider my home town (moved there when I was 12 and left when I was 23); the top college football game was in Title-Town this weekend.
It was my duty to file a report......
First let me say I've been tailgating to Tuscaloosa for nearly a dozen years. It was a small crowd at first and the stadium only seated 68k; now the party has grown and the stadium too to over 101k. It is out of control. The University's answer to all this has been to control parking access; if you control parking you control the people situation. The University solution is to make money off of us. Charge for parking; charge for food; next they'll start charging for the kilowatt.
But I digress. It's the biggest game of the year so far for the Crimson Tide. Lots of people come and set up their tents on Friday night; I can't do that. So I arrive on Saturday morning at 6:30 a.m. I don't set up in the center of the University like I used to. I left there years ago for the peace and quiet of one block away. Here are the Saturday morning tailgaters rolling in:
.
Instead of the Quad Area (center of campus) I settle in Wood's Quad (near Woods Hall). It would fill up later that day. Incidently, Wood's Quad is where the very first Alabama football home game was played so it is hallowed ground.
Woods Hall was the first building built on campus after the Civil War when the Union troops burned most of the buildings.
So I set up at 6:30 the crimosn canopy, table, satellite dish, and cooler. The beeping of the DirecTV receivers is like the smell of coffee as we hone in on the satellites before ESPN GameDay starts. Family and friends show up about 10 a.m. and we head over to the stadium to take some pictures. I have to admit the stadium is looking good these days.
In the walkway directly in line with the stadium sign the brick sidewalk has marble inserts to recognize the 23 SEC and 13 National Championships. The official NCAA Record Book has 13 NC's for Alabama; there are another 5 (for a total of 18) different years when minor polls claimed Alabama but in all modestly we stick with the NCAAA record book. Here is the most recent National Champ sidewalk marker.
On the right hand side are alcoves with statues of the head coaches who make up those 13 National Champs. One for Wallace Wade (from the 20's and 30's) and Frank Thomas (from the 40's) who gave Alabama their Rose Bowl tradition and domination; Paul Bryant has a statue naturally for his six titles. Here is Gene Stalling's statue for the 92 NC.
.
Coach Saban's statue is being cast for last year's NC but the place is ready for it.
It will be dedicated later this fall.
On the main Quad (center of campus) the tailgating is literally cheek-to-jowl. But the visiting team sent some fans and some set up for the day.
On campus the University President's house was ready for visitors (built in 1845).
Across the street from the President's Mansion is Denny Chimes, the icon of the Quad and the University. It chimes the hours and quarter hours. I proposed to my wife (a fellow UA grad on the steps of Denny Chimes one night as a senior).
Every year around the base of Denny Chimes the football team captains put their names, shoe and hand prints in the concrete. They have for years. Back in 1965, the captain was Joe Namath. He was concerned because his concrete name was "Joe" when everyone on campus and in Pennsylvania called him "Joe Willie". So that night when he put his foot and hand in the concrete for posterity he snuck out of the dorm (he was good at that) and scratched the name "Willie" in the concrete by the shoeprint. Joe got his undergraduate degree finally about 2 years ago.
The main Quad here around Denny Chimes and the main library is full of tailgaters. I can't stand it.
We ate lunch with family and watched the TN-LSU game and OK-TX game on the satellite. Then it was time to go watch the team walk off the bus the stadium 2 hours before gametime. The crowd was ready.
CNS (Coach Nick Saban) leads the team off the bus.
A lucky photo of the team leaders HTWMI (Heisman Trophy Winner Mark Ingram) in the foreground, receiver Julio Jones (with the bow tie) in the back ground, and BATR (Trent Richardson) in the gold tie behind Julio.
Both of my DS are in their high school marching band and they love to watch the Million Dollar Band warm up. I'm told these are euphoniums warming up near us. The MDB does a small pep rally then marches to the stadium one hour before kickoff.
We head for our seats in the stadium just as the sun is going down.
Here's the view from my seat in the corner of the upper deck during warmups. It's not that bad a view but it was getting dark and photo conditions were getting worse.
I'll stop here and make a second post.
