After reading all of the MAW stories that you wonderful ladies and gentleman hvae linked to in your siggies, I have decided to apply to be a wish granter with MAW. I had started the process several years ago, but then the CP came along and I left town and it never happened. As part of the Catholic Newman Center's Service Committee, I helped to sponsor a wish for a child who wanted an electric guitar. We did it independently since there were no wish kids in our area. I've been hooked ever since. I really do hope it works out this time!

Wish me luck!

good luck! one of my good friends is a Wish Granter here in SoCal and she really enjoys giving back.

That is wonderful. Good luck and enjoy being a fairy godmother, godfather?. Karen

I received an automated response saying they don't need any volunteers in my area. I found an address that goes to a real person and e-mailed them asking if my application will remain live or if I will have to reapply.

There are other agencies. My daughter was recently granted a wish from Dream Factory. She's so excited. She really hopes she gets her first wish, a horse.

I have been doing some research on the wish foundations (as a prelude to putting together a proposal for DVC members to be able to transfer points to them) I have read both organizations 990 forms, MEW is a big operation with high paid executives at the top,
Dream Factory is about 10% of the size of MEW and all the core management is volunteer, with the paid employees being “staffers”. I suspect that you will find Dream Factory to be much more responsive due to their size. Dream factory has a broader mandate and includes children who have non-fatal chronic illnesses.

I am sure they both do great work but if MEW has more resources than they need then definitely try Dream Factory.

Here is their website

Hope this helps

Thank you for the link! I'm on the Missouri page right now, but I'm not sure they have an organization that covers where I live. This whole area of the state is extremely rural and I don't think any of the organizations listed would cover us. :( I'm going to e-mail the closest one and ask.

In that case be really bold and set up a chapter for your area.

I have been impressed with Dream Factory. They came to us with the request for the wish. I know the person who approached us about the wish. They do wishes for both chronically ill and critically ill children. I told them that her choice of wishes wasn't reasonable. They're not sure if they can do her wish but they're trying. Her choices were #1 a horse named Bandit, #2 a pool, or #3 a horse. If you mention #2 she scrunches up her nose and says she doesn't really want that. She lives and breathes horses. She's taking riding lessons and she's able to do things she's never done before. She's brought my husband to tears with her tremendous effort. Anyway, I'm really impressed with them.

On the other hand, anyone know a wish organization that gives wishes to young adults? My son is 19. Dream Factory gives wishes to kids under 18.

Bookwormde: that would be cool if I could, but I know that that is just way too big of a commitment right now. I am a full time master's student and also waitress 4 days a week. I start summer session for my grad classes this week (8am-4pm) and the following week I start teaching summer school! It'll be my first full day in the classroom teaching experience, until now I have just observed and taught one or two lessons a semester. I will be teaching 6th grade communications arts, I'm slightly nervous and very excited!

In the fall I start the Professional Development School for Special Ed. I will be teaching half days, taking classes the other half of the day, plus working four days a week. I will have over 400 hours in the schools next semester, and this isn't even my student teaching! That's in the spring.

I know that as much as I would like to start a chapter, I have neither the time nor the proper experience. :( I've e-mailed the chapter I'm assuming covers us and am hoping that if they can point me in the right direction. If there is not a chapter, perhaps once I get my master's I might be able to do something, but that's providing I stay in this area.

LauraVV: I've heard of an organization that does young adults, I'll see what I can dig up. You might also try MAW. I read about a family that had their wish granted when the "kid" was 21 and were even allowed to stay at GKTW. Their TR is somewhere on this board. (Anybody know the one I'm talking about?) I didn't read the whole thing, but they indicated that although there was a bit of hassle given their daughter's age, they were able to make it work.

If it does not work now just file it away till the time is right.

Thanks for the links. I have tried to contact Special Wish several times but they haven't responded. I don't think they have a chapter in central IL.

I got an e-mail from Missouri MAW. Apparently e-mailing them paid off. They are sending me an applicaiton in them ail!

I think you could really benefit and gain some insights about Wish Trips by reading the posts on Wish Trippers Unite. This is a thread (with a link in my signature "The Home Page for Wish Trippers") started by those who have been on wish trips to help others in planning their own trips. :wizard:

I am sure everyone on that thread would LOVE to hear from you.

Bill, thanks for the info. I've actually been posting on that thread for quite awhile now.
