We usually go to the Souplantation in west Garden Grove, on Chapman Ave about 6 miles west of Harbor Blvd. Easier directions (no turns once you get on Chapman), and less traffic vs the Fullerton location. Also we like the Von's grocery store in the same parking lot.
BBQ - we like Blake's Place in east Anaheim, but the closest to DLR that you might try is Lucille's, which has a location on Chapman east of Harbor Blvd adjacent to the former Crystal Cathedral in Orange.
That Souplantation is right in our back yard. It is about 15 minutes from DL once you are on the road. You'll get there just a little quicker if you stay on Katella until you get to Valley View and then make the left there. It will be on your right as you approach Chapman, about a mile or so after you turn onto Valley View. The place is very well kept and they have all of the same things you expect to find at a Souplantation. The staff is generally pretty friendly as well, but it can sometimes be a bit crowded inside from all the locals.
I love good BBQ and there are a few places around, but nothing like you'll find in the midwest or down in Texas. Lucille's is good for a chain, we've been there about a dozen times. I wasn't happy with Woodfire Grill, we won't be back. I haven't tried Famous Daves.
I have routinely recommended a place called Carolina's, on Chapman Ave. in Garden Grove. It is a little Italian place that serves excellent food. You would never think to stop there by looking at it, but it really is very good.
A southern California "landmark" type place is Hoff's Hut. It is what I would call an upscale diner, but they have some outstanding dishes. Ironically, Lucille's was started by one of the original operators of Hoff's. There are a few nearby, but the closest to DL is near the Crystal Cathedral.
Finally, if you want to take the trek, think about Ruby's Diner at the end of the pier. I suggest the one at the end of the Seal Beach pier. It isn't quick to get to as you have to find beach parking and then walk the length of the pier. We like getting up early and going for Breakfast. Their cinamon roll french toast is amazing. You can't beat the panoramic views of the ocean on a summer morning while having a great breakfast. Lunch and dinner are good too but it does get crowded and parking can be an issue so bring a bit of patience. We've never had a problem getting there early for breakfast (early is about 8am).
