We received a message today from a National Time Share Advocacy group inviting us to a meeting to air time share Grievances at a local AppleBees. My wife asked the representative as to "what time share she was referring to" and she was able to identify our DVC membership.

She claimed that there are over 36000 complaints about timeshare issues from maintenance fees to inability to make reservations b/c rooms are being held back.

The operator claimed that we didnt need to bring anything with us except for any complaints or issues we may have.

Naturally I'm skeptical of these types of unsolicited calls. And generally i'm very happy with my DVC purchase—save for the latest resale restrictions (but thats not what I want to debate here).

I'm wondering if anyone received one of these calls, or went to the meeting. They claimed they were reaching out to anyone with timeshares including RCI and Westgate

I'm assuming my DVC info is public knowledge then—real estate interests i guess—b/c she was able o pull up some of the details i believe

This scam is directed more for people who own timeshares that are difficult to unload, such as my Wyndham timeshare. People give them away to be rid of them.
There is not that problem with DVC.

I have received two calls from different enterprises offering me dinner at a local restaurant. I really like the restaurant but decided not to buy into the scam.

A little over a year ago, a friend of mine received a similar phone call. He owned several time shares, none of which were DVC. My friend went to a local hotel to meet with them. He was told that they could get him out of his contract for $3k.

My friend asked, can't you do any better? Could they pay him more? At that point they told him, you don't understand, that is what you would pay us to take your timeshare off your hands.

Your recorded deed, which includes your name, identity of resort you own, number of points, and, if resale, your home address, is available to anyone, and for WDW resorts, you can find it online with the Orange County Comptroller's office; go here http://or.occompt.com/recorder/web/? accept the disclaimer, and then on search page put in your name as grantee (last name followed by first name) and you will likely find the link to a copy of your deed.

I tend to get a call from a timeshare relief organization at least once a month and usually just hang up. Once I just told the person I wasn't interested because I owned Disney's DVC and she said, "Oh, you own one that you can actually resell" and then she hung up.

Deeds bought directly from Disney Vacation Development do not show the buyer's home address. Instead, it is the deeds processed via the resale market that almost always display the buyer's home address.

Even if a buyer's address is not shown on a deed, its still fairly easy to use internet people finder websites, such as PIPL.com, to discover a person's complete address and phone number.

Depends on the title agency. TTM doesn't but *** generally does, and even they'll use their office address if you ask. That's what I did. I'm sure my address isn't exactly top secret, but I didn't feel the need to post it on the OCC site.
