I love to have diet dr.pepper in the morning and as you know, Disney world does not have any dr.pepper on site. So here is my odd question - can I pack some bottles of dp for our plane trip? Does anyone know if they might make a mess with the pressurization? Has anyone ever done this?

I personally would not. It's not the pressurization but how the luggage is treated that would worry me. Nothing worse than opening your wet suitcase to find all your clothes covered in soda. Well one thing would be worse, the person whose suitcase happens to be under yours. It possible that now his items are also wet and sticky. I would shop some ahead (amazon etc ) or get a grocery delivery (garden grocer) or if you are close to the board work area walk across the street to the Hess station

Hope this helps, we did this on our last trip with diet coke and lime opened our luggage and all was fine...... Until we opened one of the cans it exploded everywhere. The plane must have done something with the pressure and it blew the cans up but only as you opened them, thankfully not in our luggage!

Not sure if you are renting a car or not but there are many places you can buy some dr pepper right off property. If you have no car take a bus to the boardwalk resort and walk across the street to the Jess gas station and buy a case of dr pepper! Or maybe you might be able to substitute with mr pibb it's not exactly the same but it is close and that's sold on property!

Between how bags are tossed around to pressure and temperature differences, having carbonated beverages in checked baggage is almost asking for a problem, although it is possible to do it without any issues.

A couple options:

- you may be able to find/buy a few bottles AFTER airport security, in which case you could carry them on the plane as part of your carry-on baggage. The cabin of a plane is better pressurized and more temperature-stable than the cargo hold, so they are much more likely to survive the trip intact :-) Keep in mind carry-on baggage does have weight and size limits.

- as others have suggested, there are a number of grocery delivery services that you could order from who would deliver to your hotel. Garden Grocer ( https://www.gardengrocer.com ) is one that we have used in the past, and the have Diet DP, though they also have a minimum order (we get snacks, juice and some other items). There are other options, too.

I agree with PPs, I think I would try to find them after airport security, get them delivered, or stop at a WalMart or grocery store on the way to your resort.

On my last trip (not to Disney) I packed shampoo and conditioner and that exploded in my bad! Luckily I had them in Ziplock bags so damage was minimal but now I am bit scared to pack anything liquid in my checked bags

Despite what others have posted, it's not a problem to pack liquids in checked bags. I've checked wine many, many times, including sparkling wine and champagne with no problems. We have a wine check bag, but I've also just wrapped bottles carefully in a regular suitcase.

Don't think anyone said its a "problem," like it is obviously allowed. But having a suitcase dedicated just for wine is probably a good idea just in case (hopefully not though) one explodes or spills, that it does not ruin everything else.

But I have checked hairspray, spray sunscreen, etc. with no issues.

Agree, it's nothing about pressurization at all, but the thousand pounds of luggage on top of each other. I have had shampoo and a spray end up dumping from the ziplock it was in through my clothes. I can't even imagine dealing with wine on my vacation clothes.
If a small elephant sat on the suitcase what would happen.

It's not just your items that will me a mess but any bags around yours. I would either go to the Hess as PP suggest, or do without the few days. I like coffee, a good cup, but while on a Disney trip it's the last thing in my mind in the AM, I just want to get to the park.
Try going without every other day before you leave.

In the heat any cola iced will hit the spot.
Have fun!

We've flown beer home from several states without any problems. We wrap them in either a towel or baby diapers, then individually put each one in a gallon zip lock bag. We unload them at home and let them sit overnight. Nothing to it.

It's not that, either.

The problem is that baggage handlers throw those bags around like Frisbees.

Just search for "baggage handlers" on youtube.

I wouldn't risk it either. A friend packed a bottle of scotch in a checked bag when he flew home to Australia. Yup, it broke. I think he pretty much threw everything out.

Don't forget that full cans/bottles of soda add quiet a bit of weight to your checked bag.
Of course that would leave space (and your bag would have less weight) for the trip home so you can add those souvenirs without worry.

It's ok to check soda in cans or bottles in the baggage hold. I would, however, suggest that they are put into Ziploc baggies just in case of any problems...

When your bag is loaded onto a plane, "thousands of pounds of luggage" are not loaded on top of it! Bags are loaded on shelves or in containers.

That isn't necessarily true. I've seen the insides of some baggage areas - there really aren't shelves = bags are absolutely stacked on top of each other. The only time you have containers or cans is on certain aircraft varieties. And here, I'm going to be very boring and technical, so those who don't care can tune out.

All Airbus aircraft in the 320 series (318, 319, 320 321) have the option of loading with cans or stacking the bags. Airbus aircraft in the 330 and 340 series (very large widebody planes) generally use the cans.

As far as Boeing, the 717, 27, 37, 57 series aircraft will generally be stacked. The 747, 767, 777 and 787 will usually have the cans.

Smaller planes will usually just be stacked since the cans are way too big.

So yeah, the bags may have many others stacked on top of them. Even on the carts that take the bags out to the plane, bags are stacked 3-4 high.

Here endeth the lesson.

I've done it before, with bottles of Mountain Dew. Bottles just seem safer to me, for some strange reason. I double bagged a couple at a time, and then I wrapped them in some clothing and put them in the center of the suitcase.

I just brought a can of coke back from a cruise in my checked luggage. No problem and I am enjoying it right now.

You could also take a bus to DTD and walk across the street to the Hess gas station get all the pop you want FYI I would take one of those reusable shopping bags with you to put the pop in since those bags are sturdier than a plastic shopping bag. Then walk back across the street and hop on the DTD bus and head back to your resort.

We usually go there via this route to get pop and water.

Prices at the Hess station are very reasonable compared to Disney :)

Does the DTD Hess sell it? I know the one by the boardwalk is Coke products only.

And it's true. I have a co-worker who use to work for Southwest. He said that the heavier the luggage, the more it would get thrown around. :furious:
