Actually, canceling double booked ADRs has been Disney's long standing policy, but they usually cancel BOTH. And, no, they don't notify you generally.
It just happened a lot less because you couldn't book your own ADRs online. Now that it's happening a ton, and Disney knows they will lose revenue since lots of spots will be no-shows and others will give up trying to get in, I'm not at all surprised to hear they are going through and canceling double booked ADRs. I think they are doing guests a favor by only canceling one of them instead of both of them.
From what I've heard on the Dis and other fan sites, it's suddenly started happening this week. I'm guessing this is the time frame that online ADRs first started. While not being able to retrieve ADRs could be a technical glitch, I wouldn't be surprised if some people are having ADRs cancelled if double-booked. After all, you do agree to it on the terms of service to not hold more than one ADR for the same meal period.
1) Please link to it on TOS, because I don't see it on there. I just went in and took the system to the point of about to make the ressie and then stopped (Boy the Wave doesn't seem to be too popular). NOWHERE is there anything about cancelling double ADRs. I'm also not 100% sure TOS would apply since you do NOT have to be logged into to make a Ressie. I didn't log in and was able to do it for anything with 90 days (stopping before so I didn't make the ressie). I just don't see it and question rather this is an actual policy instead of a rumored one. I have friends who work at some of the restaurants and all of them said they think this is a rumor because if Disney did cancel it, they'd have a nightmare on their hands dealing with ticked off guests
2) It is incredibly simple to block the ability to double book online, so why allow the ability IF you are going to delete ADRs. Logic loses out...
3) THis is not mentioned by the dining agents (just called to do an ADR and listened specifically for it) again leading to questions on this being a real policy.
I'll chalk it up to glitches. The ADR online system is the worse piece of garbage I have ever used so it wouldn't suprise me in the least.
Again, Disney would have a PR disaster on their hands by doing this and a lot of ticked off guests and frazzled workers. People complain when it rains... can you imagine the fits that will be thrown because Disney "lost" their ressies. The sheer volume that some claim further points to a glitch or error.
The facts just don't support the claim... Disney would make that policy known when booking on the phone or online... It would be blatantly posted as most of their other policies regarding cancellations are... such as CC holds having to cancel before 24-48 hours. Again, logically this doesn't make any sense... Its probably a glitch and the CMs assumed it was something else.
We'll see though... I'll make two ADRs at the same time and we will see if they get cancelled.

Hey...you guys gonna go on the cruise with us in January?
