October 17, 2009 Western

Hello all,

I am new to the DIS boards and we will be sailing with you on the 17th. Could someone clearify for me what the fish extenders are? It sounds like fun and if possible something we might like to participate in.

To introduce, I am DW 36 will be sailing with DH 40, DD 10 and DD 8.

Thanks in advance.

:welcome: scubabonk... Did you just sign up for the cruise, or just found this group?

Here is a link explaining FE (basicly a gift exchange between DISer) for future cruises:

Unfortunately we had a Sept 1 cutoff since it does take some planning for the participants.

Kristi - our kids are about the same ages - DD turned 7 in Aug, DS 5 in Sept.

Still not sure if we'll make the meet @3 that day - I think that may be when we're in the room showering the kids from swimming & getting ready for dinner. I want to be dressed before the drill & sailaway since we have early dinner.

Kathy

Hi Kathy,

Glad to "meet" other people with the similar aged kids. I think we will be heading to the pool after we board the ship as well. Which pool are you guys heading to? I think my kids will be dying to try the water slide at the Mickey pool. Are you going to have both your DD and DS in the 5-7 year old club? I am thinking my son will be in the 3-5 year olds and then I am going to ask if he can join the older kids for a few of their activities that he would enjoy--like the pirate stuff. He is 4 1/2 and really outgoing.

Hope to meet everyone on board.

From what I understand, the kids can't switch back and forth between groups - they have to pick one and stick with it. I'm sure someone will verify or correct me in a second.

You are 99% correct. You can switch once. For example, suppose your child is straddling two age groups because his birthday is close (a vague and relative term on purpose) to the cut off. Let's say he's 7-1/2 and the groups are 5-7 and 8-10. You put him in the 5-7 group. It's not a good fit. You ask to switch. That switch is where he stays. Same would be true if he just turned 8 but the 8-10 group wasn't a good fit because he is a "young" 8. According to the dozens of threads I've read over the past 3 years and having done this with one of ours, I am confident that it is true.

Laura, if my source is correct, Playa Mia is closing indefinitely as of October 9th. I tried to confirm this with DCL but the agent with whom I was speaking had no knowledge of it and couldn't confirm it from her end. Maybe, the closing won't affect the cruise ships just yet or maybe not at all. I don't know what's going on and I haven't yet been able to find a phone number or email address for the resort directly.

My source is the agent I contacted at Cancun Vista. I emailed her this weekend and she emailed back this morning with the news about the closing being soon. So, I called Cancun Vista and spoke with the same woman who emailed me and she clarified that soon was October 9th.

I'm not giving up hope.

:scared1: Let me see what my TA can find out. But then again if it is cancelled, then at least I can just do something relaxing... I'll keep you updated if I find something out.

Monica - Just saw in my searching that Rick Springfield is having a cruise and Concert at Playa Mia beach in November. Maybe they are close the 9th through the week until the DCL cruise is there on Oct 21.

OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The swine flu (H1N1) is hitting our area hard and I now have 3 sickies. I can't help but wonder if they have it. We are supposed fly to Orlando Friday afternoon. Even if the sickies are better by then, the chances that the other 2 kids will not pick it up is very slim! Oh, and I'm still not packed so if I get it, we are going to have huge problems!

Angie! I can understand your anxiety, but you probably know the only way to know if it's H1N1 is a test because the symptoms are ambiguous. I hope no new sickies pop up in the next few days. Don't you think they would have come down sick by now? I am praying that you all are fit for flying this Friday!

Angie - Oh No. Hopefully they are okay by Friday. I will be sending postive thoughts you way. Maybe then you can pack too! DD has had the sniffles but allergies are pretty bad right now here, with all the wind. We all got flu shots last month so that we were covered, but H1N1 shots have not hit our region yet.

Unfortunately, they are no longer testing in our area unless your flu requires hospitalization. I'm not sure why... maybe because soooo many have gotten it. It's in all of our local schools. If fact, they are recommending taking kids with flu symptoms to the Dr. only if they are having trouble breathing, have a fever can't be controlled with meds, etc... They won't prescribe Tamaflu (sp?) anymore since they are now saying H1N1 needs to go through the body to build immunity. They are recomming ibuprofin and something else... which I guess I need to find out ASAP. One of the kids (DS-13) was saying he wasn't feeling well all weekend, but never had a fever or any real symptoms besides body aches and being tired. He did fine at school today, but came home from football practice and went straight to bed. It was then that DH noticed he was burning up. Two others (DS-9 & DD-4) now have fevers and are vomiting --- and this has happened within the last 2 hours. The twins (11) are still okay, but they were both playing with DD-4 earlier tonight before we knew she was sick. If they are going to get it, I hope it's tomorrow! Not sure how long this will last. Thanks for your prayers, Monica! I appreciate it!!!

Thanks, Laura! I appreciate all the positive thoughts we can get. It's quiet here for the moment... I guess I need to get back to packing! ;)

Have you tried the Emergen C shots I just saw a commercial for them maybe it will help out?

I just remembered when I saw your post that we have a couple samples that came in the mail last month! I'm sure the adult version will be fine for DS-13. I'll have DH pick up some of the Emergen C for Kids on his way home from work. We have used these in the past. ;) I also have some of the Halls Defense Vitamin C lozenges. Thanks for the idea! The twins are still fine as of this morning and just left for school. I hope I don't get a call to come pick them up.

I was just checking in to see how the twins were doing. Glad to hear they were fine this morning. :thumbsup2

In light of Angie's situation, I'm thinking our family should reframe from all contact with others :grouphug:for the next week and a half. Wouldn't that be just the thing? We'll just hole up here and only eat and drink what we have on hand. We won't even leave to go shopping. I'll handle the mail with gloves. Since Dh must go to work, he will have to swear to extreme hygiene precautions and strip and shower upon entering the household.

Yes please, everybody buy Emergen-C! It may help pay for my future cruises! ;) Short version of the story is that the company that makes it is Alacer, which was owned by my husband's grandfather. He passed away eight years ago, and the estate is STILL being probated. But if it ever settles, your purchases now will help me move into the verandah set later! :lmao: Also, it's genuinely good stuff. :thumbsup2

Thanks... I thought I had read they could only move if they are within 1 month of the next age or prior age. DD7 will be 2 1/2 months away from 8 and felt the 5-7 might be too young for her, but wasn't going to say anything. I will see how she does in the 5-7 group, before checking out the 8-10 group

Glad to hear the twins are doing okay so far. How is DS13 and DD4 feeling today?

Remember you need to stay healthy too!!

It may not be Disney World, but we are adding a pre-cruise family excursion. Last night, we decided to leave a day early so we could visit the Kennedy Space Center before the cruise. :cool1:

Wow!:scared1: I am sorry to be reading about the sick kiddos! I hope everyone can make a miraculous recovery by Friday!

I hope everyone else is doing well. We have not started packing yet. I am such a procrastinator when it comes to that. I have a list started though, and believe me, it is a mile long! We decided we would dress up for Halloween. I hope that they let adults trick or treat!:rotfl2:

Can you guys honestly believe how close we are? I can't! When I start to consider it, I get so excited I can barely stay at my work desk!

I AM GOING ON A DISNEY CRUISE! <phew> okay...I think I have a grip on myself now.
