occasional use of Wheelchair?

Some background first...

My dream is coming true and I am taking my parents to WDW!!!! (had to share my exciting news!)

But with that comes the reality that I can't "commando" this trip.

My dad will probably need a wheelchair for part of the trip, but not all of it. He can walk, it just is very s-l-o-w. I also don't think he realizes how much walking it will be. In addition he will definitely need it for the parades.

What I am wondering is how to handle the occasional use of the wheelchair. In MK I imagine we can "park it" at some of the stroller parking areas.

What about Epcot? Especially at World Showcase. Knowing my dad he will want to take his time there and look at every nook and crany. where can we park the wheelchair there?

Hi and to disABILITIES!

I'll start off by saying that consideration should be given to his use of an ECV instead of a chair. A couple of reasons, primarily it gives him more of a sense of independence rather than an occasional user of a chair having a "down" feeling of dependency. The other is that unless the pusher is used to it, it can be extremely wearing on the pusher.

That said, most of the lines are mainstreamed, and the person in a chair or ECV can go all the way to the boarding area of an attraction or to the special seating arera for a show. And most of the stores are3 designed so it is (fairly) easy for a person in a chair or ECV to get around.

Our last trip, my mom was an 'occasional' ECV user. After having surgery on her achilles' tendon, she couldn't walk thru the parks, but she could stand in lines and browse the shops on foot. Plus, there were 8 of us, and we wanted to ride the attractions together, instead of breaking up into smaller parties. We did exactly as you suggested - parked the ECV in the stroller area and she waited in lines, etc. with us. Same in Epcot. In Germany, for instance, we had dinner reservations but arrived there early - so she parked the ECV with the strollers at Biergarten and strolled the shops. I don't know how that would work in the other countries, where you don't necessarily have reservations but want to browse on foot. Good luck!
