The Democratic vice-presidential nominee, Sen. Joe Biden may have committed another accidental truth telling this week when he told a local Scranton, Pennsylvania, television interviewer that under Sen. Barack Obama's tax proposal, no one making over $150,000 would get a tax cut. Biden's remark is the second time in recent days that the Obama campaign has lowered it's threshold for tax cuts under the proposal. Earlier this week, the campaign released an ad that said nobody making over $200,000 would get a tax cut.

Wow the threshold is falling quickly! Guess he finally ran some numbers and decided he really can't pay for those $850+ million programs he wants to add.

Who woulda thunk it??:confused3

He may as well lower it right to $92K because the cap will come off of Social Security. And then when they hit the 401Ks, the 'world is his oyster".

With Obama's Plan there should be a surplus of 700 billion dollars.

By raising taxes from 35% to 39% on those families making more than $250,000 he should have a 700 billion surplus even after the tax breaks are given to the middle class.
----------------------------

According to the following website the Obama plan would add 700 billion dollars to the Federal budget.

With McCain's plan the Federal budget would have a 600 billion dollar deficit.

Obama, McCain tax plans
June 30, 2008

John McCain's tax plans would have everybody pay a little less in taxes with the wealthiest paying a lot less. Barack Obama's plan would have a the wealthy pay a lot more and would give middle- and lower-income people bigger breaks than McCain's plans. Obama would raise income and capital gains taxes on earners over $250,000. McCain would cut the estate tax. Obama would raise it on estates over $3.5 million.

Impact of tax changes on federal budget: Returns $700 billion Costs $600 billion

Tax Policy Center, here is how Obama's tax plan breaks down for individuals:

$0-$18,891 = $567 tax cut
$18,982-$37,595 = $892 tax cut
$37,596-$66,354 = $1,118 tax cut
$66,355-$111,645 = $1,264 tax cut
$111,646-$160,972 = $2,135 tax cut
$160,973-$226,918 = $2,796 tax cut

$226,919-$603,402 = $121 tax increase

$603,403-$2.87 million = $93,709 tax

$2.87 million-plus = $542,882 tax increase

Gosh, The One is lying? He wants more of our money than he's really saying? Well knock me over with a feather. The socialist is a…socialist!

Obama is already running an ad that drops the threshold to $200K. The $250K is for married couples. Better known as a marriage penalty tax.

So, do we even need to bother voting on Tuesday, or should we just crown him this weekend?

And just an FYI - "Moving the country forward, together, instead of tearing it down" might prove to be a bit more difficult when in the very next breath you refer to "all the haters".

That is quite a disconnect, isn't it? :goodvibes

I have to agree that your post could be taken the wrong way. You talk of moving the country forward together and then talk about haters and this just drives people apart. Parts of your thread could be interperated as having a snooty tone. Taxes concern me. I do hope I am wrong. It concerns me that Pelosi has indicated she wants to tax one of the few retirement vehicles we have left. Taking away the private union vote concerns me. I hope Obama is wise enough and strong enought to stand up to issues like that. I also hope that he can really change attitudes in Washington and move away from hate and vengence at the expense of our country. If he becomes President, he has a chance to leave a real positive or real negative mark on this country. I Pray he makes the right decisions.

For the life of me, I cannot understand why a flat tax rate is a bad idea. It seems to me that if EVERYONE paid a certain percentage, it would be totally fair. People who earn only $10,000 a year would pay the same PERCENTAGE of their income as people who earn a million a year. The millionaire is paying more dollars, yet it's the same percentage. No write-offs, no progressive or sliding scales.

From NBC's Mark Murray and NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
The McCain campaign is jumping all over Biden's interview yesterday with a Scranton TV affiliate, in which Biden said that people making under $150,000 per year would get a tax cut under Obama's tax plan.

McCain even mentioned it during his speech today in Pennsylvania, noting all the different numbers Obama and his campaign are citing on the tax issue. “Sen. Obama has made a lot of promises," the Arizona senator said in remarks his campaign passed around to reporters. "First, he said people making less than 250,000 dollars would benefit from his plan. Then this weekend, he announced in an ad that if you're a family making less than 200,000 dollars you'll benefit. But yesterday, right here in Pennsylvania, Sen, Biden said tax relief should only go to 'middle class people -- people making under 150,000 dollars a year.' It's interesting how their definition of rich has a way of creeping down. At this rate, it won't be long before Senator Obama is right back to his vote that Americans making just 42,000 dollars a year should get a tax increase. We can't let that happen.”

Video: John McCain slams Barack Obama's plans to "spread the wealth," raise taxes and limit opportunities rather than create new wealth for Americans, and make everyone successful.

Biden aides say his comments were actually consistent with Obama's tax plan -- people under $150,000 get a cut, and people making up to $250,000 stay the same.

Indeed, here's what Obama said at the Saddleback forum in August: "What I can say is under the approach I'm taking, if you make $150,000 or less, you will see a tax cut. If you're making $250,000 a year or more, you're going to see a modest increase." ***CLARIFICATION *** The Obama campaign tells First Read that this is how Obama's plan breaks down: People making less than $250,000 will not see their taxes increase, and people making less than $200,000 will receive some type of tax cut. And all of this is essentially reflected in the Tax Policy Center stats below.

*** UPDATE *** An Obama aide points out to First Read that the $150,000 figure Biden was citing was simply an example of what someone making that amount would get under Obama's tax plan. Indeed, Biden's $150,000 remark came after he referred to someone making $1.4 million.

Per the Tax Policy Center, here is how Obama's tax plan breaks down for individuals:
$0-$18,891 = $567 tax cut
$18,982-$37,595 = $892 tax cut
$37,596-$66,354 = $1,118 tax cut
$66,355-$111,645 = $1,264 tax cut
$111,646-$160,972 = $2,135 tax cut
$160,973-$226,918 = $2,796 tax cut
$226,919-$603,402 = $121 tax increase
$603,403-$2.87 million = $93,709 tax increase
$2.87 million-plus = $542,882 tax increase
