Believe it or not there are actually churches where priests, rabbis, pastors, keep politics out of their sermons and their churches.

You see this is where the problem lies. In America, you demand "separation of church and state". In my opinion sermons have to discuss political and world events and try to equate them with biblical teachings. The preacher/minister/priest/rabbi HAS to try to make some religious sense out of what is going on in the world around you otherwise church is a history lesson, not a religious experience.

It sounds like many of you want your religion blended and spoon fed.

BTW, I listened to a couple of sound bytes from and didn't really consider them "spewing hate". I don't think he hates America at all, nor was he trying to inspire others to "hate". I actually agreed with some of what I heard. However, my impression was formed only from only a few seconds and I would have to listen to the sermon in it's entirety to form and intelligent opinion.

If you read my previous post, I gave Bill Cosby credit. He is telling blacks to stop blaming everyone and make a better life for yourselves. Nobody is going to hand you anything, but make the best of what is given. My white son will be going to college this fall (I am paying full tuition) while according to college records the average "African American" will be paying 25% of what I will pay for my son. Stop whining about opportunity and educate yourselves while you get a virtual free ride.

Some of you are such hypercritics, for every person that wants to hold Obama so desperately to Wright words have Friends and Family with racist and prejudice views. Sometimes you laugh; most times when you disagree you MIGHT say something. But that doesn't stop you from being your neighbors friends, having play dates, breaking bread with that same Friend or family member at Thanksgiving or Christmas. MOST of the time, you ignore it. Some of you are being unreasonable and LOOKING for a reason NOT to vote for Obama. Since you couldn't find something directly on Obama, a associate was the next best thing. Be honest, Obama wasn't getting your vote anyway, before you had no excuse, now ya got one.

I believe in the possibility, but I've never known anyone who has attended one before. I've never had a Priest endorse a candidate, but I've certainly heard Priests address church teaching on social issues like abortion, stem cell research, gay marriage, divorce and the war. Doesn't mean I agree with all of them, but I've heard them. I've never heard outright hatred in my church, but I have seen and heard many preachers teach hate for Muslims, gays, feminists and pretty much anyone who doesn't believe the same way they do. Those ministers hold revivals and rallies that draw thousands of people-are all those people supporters of every word those preachers say?

I just don't buy that. I think that adult worshippers are fully capable of understanding when a minister crosses the line, explaining to their children that the minister crossed the line and FORGIVING that minister for crossing the line. I believe adult worshippers can separate the teachings of the Church and when the Preacher is talking about the Christian life from social commentary-and they can explain that to their children.

I ca agree with some of your comments. I can also tell you that in my church, that I haev attended since baptism, my priest has NEVER spoke hatred about any other religions or race or sexual orientation. Yes of course they have spoken about against abortion, and homosexuality because those are fundamental beliefs of the Church. If the priest that I have known my whole life, that married me and my dh, that baptised my children began preaching hatred towards others then i would gladly leave my Church. I would no longer support the church with my donations.

I agree, that is a sad thing to say when people sincerely offer prayers. I know I for one don't care if thoughts or prayers aren't wanted - it won't stop me from constantly keeping every single member of our military in my thoughts and prayers. I know my own nephew who is deployed(USMC)always ends his emails to us "As always, thank you for your thoughts and prayes - we are grateful"

As my former reverend and spiritual guide once said, "Sometimes I wonder if God is up there listening to our prayers and thinking 'Get up off your knees and do something already! If you take the time to look you'll see that I've given you exactly what you need to solve your problems.'"

Sen. Obama is not a saint nor the anti-Christ. He bungled this a little bit, IMO, but I don't think it's a big deal.

No offense, but what are you learning in church? I ask because I have read your anti gay sentiments on the board many threads regarding homosexuality. I have seen you defend your hateful stance on the subject so vehemently that I actually had to step back, look at my views on gay people and ask God to forgive me because i saw the monster I was in your post.

Again, I'm not trying to offend you at all Joe, but I must ask are your views that you hold so strongly also the views of your Pastor? Did your family disassociate themselves from you because of your harsh views on homosexuality?

To our Pastor, homosexuality is just one sin among many that people try to overcome. God does not condemn us -- God loves us and forgives us and sent His Son to the cross to die for all sin.

Well said, DH has 28 years with deployments, my brother has 27 years and is on his second Afghanistan deployment. We too support our military and the mission.

Dawn, I didn't realize your husband was in the military. Now I understand your knowledge on the subject.

I live near a base and whenever I'm on my way to work I see the men and women at the gas station or out to eat for lunch. I try to make a point to say thank you and I haven't had one grimace yet. As a matter of fact, one woman almost cried she was so appreciative. Everyone likes to be thanked for their hard work. In my eyes, our military has one of the most (if not most) important jobs in the world. I'm not going to stop praying or stop thanking.

It's been 140 years since slavery ended (in the south), 40+ years of affirmative action. How long are we going to blame "whitey" for all their problems? My wife teaches high school to "inner city kids". It's a joke, they have no ambition, no family support, no sense of trying to improve their lives. But Obama's preacher is right, it's "whitey" trying to keep the blacks down. As much as I abhor Bill Cosby for the Tawana Brawley mess (which happened in my backyard) I applaud his efforts to blame the blacks for the majority of the blacks problems. You've had ample time and extra opportunity to help yourselves. If millions of black people can make great things out of their lives, then the ones who don't should be blamed, not everyone else. I might have read it here or on another forum but Obama is like the 16 year old boy trying to get in to your 15 year old daughters pants. He tells you what you want to hear then when you get pregnant he runs away. He reminds me of the wizard in The Wizard of Oz. "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain." I can't believe that there are that many people buying into what he is saying. He says what you want to hear, nothing more, with no ability to actually do what he says he will do. Jim Jones did the same thing in Jamestown and we all know how that ended. I am truly scared that this man might actually be president.

Good grief. I am not saying anything about "whitey". Do you get that?? I am saying that a church is trying to mobilize the community pick themselves up. If you do not get the distinction, you do not want to. They are trying to take responsibility for their own community. ("Whitey" should like that )

And frankly, if you think that affirmative action did a big favor to the black community in general, I think you are wrong. Quotas suck. We know that. What should have been done is REALLY to give equal opportunity - that starts at school. if you want to tell me that for the pst 40 years there has been equal opportunity in that regard, I think you are deluded. Affirmative action was the only palatable fix to true racism. The last time I lived in the South was 20 years ago, and I can tell you outside of my college town, racism was deep dark and ugly - and alive and well. My brother living in Georgia now is clear that it is still pretty ugly, though not as prevalent as itwas in decades past.

No, I'm saying that some folks, who pontificate they know everything about Obama based on a preacher's 15 second sound bite seem to have a big agenda.
Those who vote for others, because they support them are just that, supporters. Most who sincerely support a candidate don't post for many hours a day about how much they dislike/hate/distrust opposing candidates.

On the other thread, I've raised two kids. It's not always easy. Hugs to you!

Lack of income/affirmative action. Is it my fault that these kid's parents chose to not educate themselves and get decent paying jobs? I don't blame the kids, I blame the parents (as Bill Cosby does). How many years of cheap college education is needed before someone says enough is enough? Will my grandkids be in the same position as my kids who are in the same position as I was? I would say 80% of the minority students in my college got a virtual free ride. The worst part was they felt it was owed to them, as were passing grades. Stop blaming everyone but yourselves people.
