Obama's Speech

emphasis mine.

I don't know - can we hold someone accountable for the actions of another? So if 20 years from now I decide to run for President am I going to be accountable for the fact that the Priest who was suppose to marry us was found guilty of sexual molestation of a child? Will I then be considered a criminal through association?

If at the time of your marriage, you knew he was a molestor. If when he baptised your children you knew he was a molestor. And if every year you gave a considerable amount of $ to support his teachings, and praised him publically over a 20 year period....then yes I would hold you accountable.:guilty:

Now Pastor Wright is being compared to a child molester. I guess because comparing to a group that lynched and terrorized wasn't enough.:lmao:

I never said that I believe Obama feels the same as Wright. I just wanted to hear him tell me what it is about this man that makes Obama consider him like family. I don't think that is too much to expect from a man who want to run our country.

Perhaps it was because he grew up without a father, perhaps it's due to his saying that this was the man that brought him to Christ, and that it was this man that had done so much good in the community in regards to daycare, aid's and other issues. I believe he said it was the many years of good the man DID do. Perhaps someone can find the written version of the speech because he did address it.

As someone who actually voted for him in my state, I have to agree with the above. To me he is done in my eyes. Your spiritual advisor says a lot about who you are, there is no way getting around this, he sought advice from this man. This preacher never hid his ideas, Obama must have known. I am soooo saddened and disappointed. This really says a lot about him I am afraid to say. I was so happy to have an African American male and a female running for President, it gave me goosebumps, my ideal ticket would be them both together. I thought it would bring together this country. Now I really can't support him, I feel duped and had. I feel he is not at all who I thought he was. Mostly I feel very sad, and his speech just left me more unsatisfied. This really says a lot.

I think you need to do what you need to do. Personally, I found his speech to be sincere. The text is still on Drudge if you'd like to ponder further.

His speech was something and it was 100% spin control.

I was impressed with his speech--of course I am a Barack supporter to begin with.

I grew up in a racist environment where people whose hearts I think I know and who I believe to be good denigrated people of other ethnic backgrounds. Their ignorance is unfathomable to me and yet I still respect them and have modeled my life on many of their good points. Their hatred and lashing out at people of different ethnic backgrounds was something I cannot accept and something I have spent my life trying to overcome, but I would not disown them for their ignorance. In the same way, I don't think Barack Obama should have to disown his pastor.

We as a nation need to come together and work towards that day when we will be a more perfect union... I was moved by the speech and more importantly, Barack Obama's lifetime of dedication to the principals that founded this nation--to the notion that all of us are equal, that we can form a government of and by the people and that we can live together in one society.

I think it's cute that your favorite drink now accompanies your posts. I'll let you enjoy the whole pitcher, though.
I'm more of a nice chardonnay person, myself.

I expect that most pastors do those things for their communities. The difference is they don't preach such hatred at the pulpit. I can tell you that if my priest spoke that way I would find another parish to attend, and financially contribute to. Obama could have done the same but he didn't. That speaks volumes to me, I don't want a President that supports that kind of hate with his pocketbook.

You stated how I feel. If he is supporting this kind of hatred by showing up and listening to it and paying for it, then what will he be doing as leader of this country with the taxpayers pocketbook? It's kind of a scary thought to me.

I agree. I read the speech and am now listening to it on YouTube. tinkerdorabelle, if you have not read/listened to the entire speech (and not just the snippets) you really must take the time to do so. I think it will heal your anger and disappointment. It really is that powerful.

I agree. As a member of UCC Congregational, I can tell you that Obama hasn't been the only one on spin control. I have received email forwarded to me by the head of the Ct. conference and the UCC General Minister and I am not buying the spin. If I heard a similar message from my pulpit, I would be out of there in a second. I would love to see my church follow the lead of other Congregational churches and leave the UCC. This was my response to the Ct. conference.

Unbelievable. I received the prayer request for Trinity UCC and Rev. Wright. You are telling us that we can't believe our "lying ears". I have heard a lot of what Rev. Wright has said, and its hate filled and perpetuates the racial devide that is going on in this country. He asserts the false belief that the United States created AIDS/HIV to kill minorities. I will hold Trinity UCC in prayer in that they are successful in finding a pastor who doesn't preach racism, lies and hate. Based on the fact that Obama has been a member of that church for 20 years, based on the observations that his congregation rejoiced in Wright's hate filled speech by dancing in the aisles, I do not hold out much hope that Trinity UCC will reverse its course. It certainly explains Michelle Obama's statement about just "now being proud of her country". I see where she learned that despite the fact that she had access to the best education and universities that this country could offer and took advantage of that. For the first time in my life, I am embarrassed for the UCC. In some of his sermons, I do not see much difference between Trinity UCC and some the madrasas of Islam that preach the same hate filled speech. Its a very sad day that that type of preaching occurred. It is sadder that you chose to defend it and blame the media for shining a light on it.

That's the same reaction I have when I hear some of the venomous, bigoted, and hate filled things that spew from some of the Fundamentalist Evangelical Clergymen and Lay People, and I hear some people giving it a pass.

The poster was posing a question about a religious leader. NOBODY COMPARED WRIGHT TO A CHILD MOLESTER.
