Obama's Speech

I did not listen to the speech but I did read it and it sounds very powerful. I am sure he made a great address. However we all know this was written by a team of speechwriters over the past week or so and every word is carefully crafted. He may have delivered the speech and probably had some input but there is no chance that he sat down and wrote this out so to me it is always going to ring a bit hollow no matter how powerful his delivery was.

I am not just picking on Obama here because I realize that is what happens with all politicians and it is one of the reasons why I hate the politics we see in this country. These candidates are not speaking as themselves so much as they are participants in some great big play with 90% of the script written and the other 10% carefully improvised.

It is widely reported he wrote the speech himself, he started writing the speech either Friday night or Saturday and even continued the writing through this morning. He did not use speech writer's, I'd like to know what verifiable source you used to suggest he did.

Well, if he did use writers, then he used the same writers for his books because the tone is exactly the same. I've read both books and this speech could have been in either of them and it would have flowed smoothly.

All politicians use writers, so I wouldn't be shocked or horrified if Obama did too. I still believe that the thoughts and ideas were his, however-even if someone else wrote the words or helped him write the words.

On face value a nice speech.

But as someone who opposes Obama, I still do.

Typical Obama, he himself is ABOVE IT ALL!:snooty: He mentioned EVERYBODY ELSES racist qualities, except himself.
But being the nice guy he is, he did out his White grandmother as a racist! :sad2:

I don't have a verifiable source other than we know that he does in fact employee speechwriters and their job is to write speeches and help "tune" those that the candidate writes. Find me a verifiable source that says every word of that speech was written by him without input from the speechwriters, campaign manager, etc.. That is just the way politics works. I am not saying that he doesn't believe those things or that these are not some of his ideas it is just that I find these speeches to ring hollow to me because they are so carefully drafted and the choice of each word is examined.

You qualified in your second sentence-you oppose Obama. It won't matter what he says or what he does, your mind is made up. Nothing wrong with that.

Nice speech --- I'll go as far to say very good speech

But Obama still hasn't won me back to his side. He will not get this Democrat's vote in November if he is the Nom.

Edit to say I really don't know what Obama can say or do to 'win' my support back. I am not really sure if he can do anything to tell you the truth.
I just don't trust him.

He did not say she was racist for the love of god.... he said she made statements regarding race that made him cringe. For the record my FIL made terrible statements about many races that were not Irish Catholic, but I cared for him for 8 years right up until the moment he died.... was he racist? Umm, I wouldn't go so far as to say that, but he sure made many racial comments that made me very uncomfortable. I have no problem saying this to anyone that brings it up. Oh, and he went to church weekly, so go figure....

Have you read either of his books? She *was* a racist.

Have you read either of his books? She *was* a racist.

She raised him and loved him and he just (figuratively) threw her under the bus for political considerations.

For the people who said he wrote the speech himself: I believe it. It is very well written and sounds exactly like him.

I think it was a great speech. Having lived in the south for the last 7 years I have seen the things he spoke about. Until you actually see how blacks are still treated you just can't understand their anger. I may not agree with the pastors comments but I understand where it is coming from.

Last year Mobile, AL got a black mayor. My hairdresser said she was so scared by that. I told her he was also a politician and Mobile would be just find. The black mayor has brought new business to Mobile that will create many new jobs. We haven't had riots in the street, it's mostly business as usual.

When I first moved here I actually had a white women say to me that she liked it better when blacks knew their place. Her husband asked me how we treated the blacks up north. Everyone is not like that but an awful lot are. But it is like Obama said in his speech, we don't talk about it in public.

The country has come a long way in our treatments of minorities but we still have a long way to go.

Well, I guess it depends on what street in Mobile you live on. I'm sure residents in Prichard or Happy Hills can't say the same thing. :thumbsup2

What I got from reading his book is that his grandmother was never quite comfortable with the part of Barry (as he used to be called) that was black.

And I think that is why most people object to some of what Pastor Wright says ~ it hits too close to home and makes them uncomfortable.

Geesh, he didn't throw her under the bus, he illustrated the fact the racism comes from every side and even from people you love. The ideal is that every successive generation becomes more tolerant and understanding, learning from past experiences.

So are you saying that the Senator has to be racist? Perhaps by living with his Grandmother as well as his father's family gave him a wider perspective on race.

Why do you think Senator Obama is a racist?

Yes "God Damn America" makes me VERY uncomfortable.

Nah, I think it's that Pastor Wright is so far off the mark that it's laughable.

As for Sen. Obama, nice speech. But not sure it means a whole lot. Personally, I find most of Obama's speeches to be too preachy and this was no exception. Granted, I'm not a supporter, but still interested.
