What is all the religious fevor surrounding Obama?

The faith healer for our time

Barack Obama, without a church since he abandoned the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's congregation of addled bigots, racists and conspiracy nuts, ought to consider starting his own. Having never been inside a church, many of his disciples regard him as the messiah.

He's ready to rock. "A light will shine through that window, a beam of light will come down upon you, you will experience an epiphany," he told a raucous rally of the rapt in Lebanon, N.H., back in January. "You will suddenly realize that you must go to the polls and vote for Obama."

Another rally the other night outside Washington reflected the fervor of a 19th-century brush-arbor revival. A shopkeeper in Virginia was typical: He closed his store early, inspired by the senator's "values and integrity," to get there early because he's been busy "intending" victory for the senator. He has been "intending" since Iowa, explaining to the Weekly Standard that "intending" is the spiritual practice of "intending" something to happen. "But we don't pray or do any weird Kool-Aid drinking stuff like that."

Some of the Obama faithful think it's necessary to amend the Bible. "I cried all night," Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. of Illinois told Politico, the Capitol Hill newspaper. "I'm going to be crying for the next four years. What Barack Obama has accomplished is the single most extraordinary event that has occurred in the 232 years of the nation's history ... The event is so extraordinary that ... another chapter could be added to the Bible to chronicle its significance."

Relics of the new religion are highly venerated (though some Obamanuts are looking to venerate on the cheap). When he left a half-eaten waffle and a scrap of pork sausage (no Muslim here) on his plate at a diner in Pennsylvania, a waitress carefully wrapped the plate - "with his DNA on the silverware" - and put it up for auction on eBay with instructions to start the bidding at $10,000. It actually sold for 99 cents, and the winning bidder had to pay $6 postage (but got the DNA at no extra charge).

The German weekly Der Spiegel, Rolling Stone and the New Republic have featured Obama as messiah on their covers, and celebrities are racing each other to terminate skeptics with extreme piety. Eve Konstantine, a certified Georgetown guru, calls him "the collective representation of our purest hopes." Chris Matthews, the famous cable-TV shouter, isn't the only celebrity who feels something (chiggers? bedbugs?) crawling up his leg at the mere thought of Barack Obama. "This is bigger than Kennedy," Chris says. "This is the New Testament."

..........................

Anyone who inspires such zeal among the unchurched, the irreligious and the irreverent is a phenomenon we haven't seen since Aimee Semple McPherson blazed a sawdust trail across the American firmament (or at least across a big revival tent) eight decades ago. If the senator has not quite evolved to messiah, he's got a profitable future in faith-healing. Who needs universal health care? He's wasting his time in politics.

As I see it the only person Obama is is the second coming of is Jimmy Carter.

Ok...I put quotes around 'second coming'!:lmao:

I think some of the Obama supporters are actually getting more of a 'spiritual" fullfilment than a "political' fulfillment from him. I found this article interesting...also :lmao: & :scared1: !

What a stupid question. Does asking questions like this fulfill a religious need for you?

No bolt of lightning needed to support Obama with this kid, just a boatload of common sense...

I am neither for nor against Obama particularly, but I do know what the New Testament says. IF you want to try to find a part for him, you could make yourself believe he's one of two people who are to appear in the End Times, and neither of them are flattering:

1. The Anti-Christ. This person is to take up a position of political power, and at first he's to seem to be perfect. He's to unite the world as one and most everyone will be taken in by his speaking ability. People will flock to him. Several years into his reign -- after he has considerable power -- he's to show his "true colors" and begin to show that he's on Satan's side.

2. The False Prophet. This man is to be sort of a lieutenant to the Anti-Christ, and he's to set himself (and the Anti-Christ) up as gods.

I don't know enough about Obama to have an opinion on whether any of this is true -- I'm just saying what's actually in the book of Revelations.

The scariest line in the quoted article was the one about "Some of the Obama faithful think it's necessary to amend the Bible . . . The event is so extraordinary that ... another chapter could be added to the Bible to chronicle its significance." I believe the man will be our next president, but that doesn't mean he should be added to the Bible. That's crazy talk.

:thumbsup2

I can't answer the poll because he fullfills NOTHING for me. However, it certainly seems he is the second coming to some people who post on the DIS, whether or not they answer honestly on this poll is another story.

Oh boy -- ITA with this statement. I thinkn it's hilarious how most of his supporters can never admit any shortcoming/mistake/etc of BO. It is really unbelievable.

In real life, a coworker compared BO to Jesus the other day :faint:

You know, a few months back I posted this same type thing because I was reading on the net about him and these type of things like DISUNC posted kept coming up. I am not sure if the media is wanting to paint him in this light or it is just happening. :confused3 Anyway, just stating the facts (of what I was reading about BO) got me raked over the coals, my words were twisted, etc. I was not calling him the antichrist--I was just quoting what I was reading and seeing the comparisons that are in the Bible.

I still do not see him as the antichrist or the false prophet. However, as a nation, I really do feel like he is a step closer to what is predicted in the Bible. I think it started a long time ago and through the years we have gotten to where we do not trust our leaders anymore. Bill Clinton and GWB have done nothing but help the cause and set things up.
The Middle east plays the role in the "end times" more than the good ol' USA but our country is really in the mindset for things to happen now compared to even 100 years ago. We have dumbed our children down and we are more dependant on our government to take care of us than ever before. I'm not sure how anyone could read the Bible and not see where all this is going...

In my opinion, BO has to happen more than JM at this point, for things to roll forward. Of course, I wondered when GWB won how that would play into it all but with 9/11 and our situation in the Middle east, there you go. As the book of Daniel says--the handwriting is on the wall. Oh yeah, I'm one of those Bible believing idiots who really does think that it'll all come to pass and everything that happens is a piece of the plan. Hey, if the pieces fit, the puzzle can be put together. Not sure what kind of puzzle piece BO is but he is definitely one of them...as we all are.
 :faint: :hippie:

OK, your coworker is a whackjob, but as for the first part of your post, the same can be said of Clinton supporters, Bush supporters, McCain supporters (well, his few true supporters that is, not the ones reluctantly voting for him as the lesser of 2 evils), etc, etc.

And I'm not an Obama fan, just someone tired of these ridiculous attempts to discredit him and his supporters.

Guess some people can't come up with a good argument against his policies, so they make up crap like this. :confused3

I am a Democrat and an atheist who is married to a Catholic. I find the entire idea obnoxious. I think he stirs our optimism and that is what is so refreshing. Much of America is burned out on fear mongering and war. I have voted for people who claim to be Christian on many occasions but their religiosity has played no role in my decision.

I don't think it is a stupid question. I think for some, his rise has been thought of as "messianic" or the phrase would never have emerged. Those that feel that way will never admit it, but when I hear the likes of Chris Matthews, MSNBC say that he feels "tingles up his leg" when he hears Obama speak, then one needs to seriously say to Chris Matthews; "get a hold of yourself or get evaluated for diabetic neuropathy".

:thumbsup2 Well said. And, Gosh I hope not. But, if Mrs.Pete is onto something, then I guess I'm on the right side in this one. ;)

I'd have to go with #1 on that list.;) DH said this jokingly several months back and now I can see why.

Well said. You'll find that many of them just love to stir the pot. Just report their posts for what they are and move on.

Let this one sink.

Uh, no optimism here - just downright dread.
