How could this not have been reported here?

McCain says he doesn't know enough about HIV/Aids to say if any contraception methods would stop it's transmission... He's sure he's taken a position in the past, he'll have to look that position up :sad2: I just report the facts, course he's relying on the doctor that said without examining her, that Terry Schiavo was in fact not in a vegetative state:

SOMEWHERE in NORTHERN IOWA — The unthinkable has happened. Senator John McCain met a question, while sitting with reporters on his bus as it rumbled through Iowa today, that he couldn’t – or perhaps wouldn’t – answer.

Did he support the distribution of taxpayer-subsidized condoms in Africa to fight the transmission of H.I.V.?

What followed was a long series of awkward pauses, glances up to the ceiling and the image of one of Mr. McCain’s aides, standing off to the back, urgently motioning his press secretary to come to Mr. McCain’s side.

The upshot was that Mr. McCain said he did not know this subject well, did not know his position on it, and relied on the advice of Senator Tom Coburn, a physician and Republican from Oklahoma.

His press secretary, Brian Jones, later reported that Mr. McCain had a record of voting against using government money to finance the distribution of condoms.

All this took place on the second day of the reprise of the “Straight Talk Express” bus trips that Mr. McCain made a central part of his campaign in 2000. It also comes as Mr. McCain has eagerly been trying to ease strains with social conservatives in the party who, for the most part, do not support using government money to pay for condoms.

A transcript of the encounter follows. (Weaver is John Weaver, his senior adviser, and Brian is Mr. Jones, his press secretary):

Reporter: “Should U.S. taxpayer money go to places like Africa to fund contraception to prevent AIDS?”

Mr. McCain: “Well I think it’s a combination. The guy I really respect on this is Dr. Coburn. He believes – and I was just reading the thing he wrote– that you should do what you can to encourage abstinence where there is going to be sexual activity. Where that doesn’t succeed, than he thinks that we should employ contraceptives as well. But I agree with him that the first priority is on abstinence. I look to people like Dr. Coburn. I’m not very wise on it.”

(Mr. McCain turns to take a question on Iraq, but a moment later looks back to the reporter who asked him about AIDS.)

Mr. McCain: “I haven’t thought about it. Before I give you an answer, let me think about. Let me think about it a little bit because I never got a question about it before. I don’t know if I would use taxpayers’ money for it.”

Q: “What about grants for sex education in the United States? Should they include instructions about using contraceptives? Or should it be Bush’s policy, which is just abstinence?”

Mr. McCain: (Long pause) “Ahhh. I think I support the president’s policy.”

Q: “So no contraception, no counseling on contraception. Just abstinence. Do you think contraceptives help stop the spread of HIV?”

Mr. McCain: (Long pause) “You’ve stumped me.”

Q: “I mean, I think you’d probably agree it probably does help stop it?”

Mr. McCain: (Laughs) “Are we on the Straight Talk express? I’m not informed enough on it. Let me find out. You know, I’m sure I’ve taken a position on it on the past. I have to find out what my position was. Brian, would you find out what my position is on contraception – I’m sure I’m opposed to government spending on it, I’m sure I support the president’s policies on it.”

Q: “But you would agree that condoms do stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Would you say: ‘No, we’re not going to distribute them,’ knowing that?”

Mr. McCain: (Twelve-second pause) “Get me Coburn’s thing, ask Weaver to get me Coburn’s paper that he just gave me in the last couple of days. I’ve never gotten into these issues before.”

This went on for a few more moments until a reporter from the Chicago Tribune broke in and asked Mr. McCain about the weight of a pig that he saw at the Iowa State Fair last year.

Turns out, that 3:00 AM phone call for Hillary is actually a collection agency. :lmao:

The list of Clinton campaign debts:

http://query.nictusa.com/pres/2008/M2/C00431569/D_DEBTS_C00431569.html

I'd post it here, but it's too long to fit on one page. :teeth:
I looked through that list, she has an amazing amount of debt she's thus far decided not to pay. And probably a dumb question, but why does she owe money to Boys and Girls clubs, YWCA, high schools and school districts? Wouldn't you think at least one person involved in her campaign would at least find this embarrassing and would cut a check?
(I guess they're supposed to "chill out"...):rolleyes1

Oh brother! No wonder both Dems are fighting so hard for the nomination. It's easy to see that once people start taking a closer look, McCain looks incredibly beatable. Don't worry though...I'm sure someone writing all of this down. Along with his Shiite/Sunni confusion, it'll definitely come up again in the general election.

I though McCain wasn't supposed to take any "tricky" questions unless Lieberman was at his side. :rotfl:

You aren't an elected official that proposed this mess or agreed with it, so I'm sure you're not who the comment was directed at!!

I know what WVrevy meant. I'm just gigging him a little. ;)

Yeh, where the heck was Lieberman when he needed him?

Coincidentally, Obama took a similar type town hall question yesterday, he had the right answer regarding healthcare and what to teach... I think McCain's still living in the early 80's...

Our other Liberal friends should see this post...

That really, really looks bad. :scared1:

Ugh, I'm so frustrated - where can you find a listing of his campaign stops before the actual date of the event? The "events" section of his site are full of local community events, etc. and not actual townhalls, speeches, etc. He's in my backyard - was in Lancaster this morning and of course I didn't know. How far in advance to they plan or announce this stuff? Still hoping to see him speak anywhere in Allentown, Reading, Lancaster, Philly, etc. If anyone hears anything let me know, will ya?

Have you joined your States email list? That's the way to really get all the details, also your local newspaper will sometimes list the stop, but only like a day in advance!

If you look back through the debt reports for previous months, you'll see that many of those schools and small catering and other event vendors have been on the list for months. :sad2: Someone from the Clinton camp went on Morning Joe to say the bills are being paid. I'll be interested to see how many of them have come off the list in the next report.

Are you near Westchester college (or University), he'll be there for Chris Mathew's college tour on Wednesday?

Yep. Thanks - I'll try.

See, I can't keep up with these things.

Certainly not like your average concert tour where dates are planned months in advance.

I know I want to get out to see him. I know he's making lots of local stops. I know I'll have to be ready to drop everything and run as soon as I hear something.

Thanks for your help everyone.

I think Chris Mathew's is on live Wednesday at 5pm, I've watched his college tours before... if you're near the college call and ask what time they will start and if they are handing out tickets in advance.

Also, call one of Obama's offices in PA, I know he has 25 of them, they'll be able to tell you what the stops are.... That's probably a more concrete way of getting what you need...
