DS will be five in July, is 41 inches tall, and only weighs 34 lbs. He's a skinny-minnie. I'm getting very frustrated trying to find shorts that fit him properly. Carter's shorts fit him well (4T works-- we usually have to take in the waist with the adjustable straps), but really, I'd just like to find some super cheap elastic waisted play shorts for him (think $5 or under a pair). I bought him some 4T granamals brand from Walmart yesterday, and they slip right off him. I don't want to go down to 3T's b/c they end up looking really short. Anybody know of a cheap brand of shorts that runs slim in toddler sizes? --Katie

I've occasionally found some adjustable strapped pants at Target, but they're closer to $10 a pair, unless you can find them on sale.

Try Old Navy.

My daughter is tall, but has a little waist and I get her cotton pants/shorts from Old Navy and they are great!

I would try Target toddler shorts for him. I haven't looked this year but I love the cotton, slip on elastic waste shorts I've bought there in the past.

Unfortunately, sometimes you have to spend more for the skinny boy shorts/pants I've found. I buy slims from Lands End.

My youngest ds7 is a skinny minnie too, with us it has become trial and error. JC Penneys has cheap toddler summer clothes call OKIE DOKIES about $3ea.

I have a skinny DS7. He's wearing size 5 or 6 elastic waist shorts from Gymboree, but I still have to take the waist in a little on each side. My DS2 is following in his brother's footsteps. He's wearing 6-12 mos shorts.

I know I saw toddler elastic waist shorts at Target for $5 a couple of weeks ago. You could get those and just take them in a little. It's so hard to find clothes for skinny kids!

I love Gap for their jeans and jean shorts. They all have the adjustable elastic. My son is 6 and is skinny as well. His waist can still fit into 4T and sometimes even smaller. His legs are more in the 5-6 range, though, so we go with Gap's Size 6 Slim.

Shorts are a lot easier because we buy 4-5T's. It doesn't matter if shorts are an inch or so short- you can't really tell. So those you can buy at more inexpensive stores like Target, etc.

Old Navy for adjustable waist shorts is my suggestion too. DD and DS are both super skinny. We buy slim with adjustable waists in everything and have to take them in about 4 notches on each side.
Adjustable waist is the greatest invention ever!!!

Both of my kids are very skinny as well and its hard to find shorts that have elastic waist. I pretty much do all adjustable waist unless the shorts are longer and then I can roll up the waist which works sometimes and sometimes not. My mom had this same problem with me and I remember we shopped at Childrens Place for a long time. I buy from Gap and Old Navy...dd can't wear gymboree jeans and ds usually wears one size smaller in gymbo jeans/pants as for some reason they run bigger. Good luck. I'd try target or jcp. The old navy elastic waist for girls seems to fall off dd but ds can wear them as long as I roll up the waist. They aren't as cheap as what you are looking for though so I don't know if that really helps.

Buy the cheap elastic waist ones from Kmart or Walmart and just do a few quick stitches on each side to take them in 1/2 inch each side.

Works well for us.

The Circo shorts (from Target) run small in girls, so they might run small for boys (and they're cheap!). I find Osh Kosh runs small and long for DD, as well. Might be worth a look.

It's nice to know that I'm not the only one with a little 5 year old. My son just turned 5 a few weeks ago and is 40 inches and 33 lbs. I have good luck with the shorts from Walmart/Target. I think he wore 2T last year and will probably need 3T this year. I will have to try the ones from Old Navy.

...I have one too. My DS is 6, and is 43.5 inches tall and is probably around 40 pounds.

The best elastic waist shorts are by Gymboree. They're a little nicer (better waistband, slightly thicker material, and I've always found them discounted in one of Gymbo's frequent "stock up on the item we have in 50 different colors" type of sales. (or if you have a gymboree outlet, that's another way too.)

For cheaper brands, either the circo or JC penney storebrand are adequate. But they don't hold up as long to rough and tumble boy wear.

I've never had luck with old navy shorts for DS--they just don't fit him right?!?....that's the trouble when you've got a skinny kid, you can't just throw whatever clothes on them--I've always got to check and make sure DS isn't inadvertently showing off his underwear because his pants are too loose, LOL.

I have a skinny-minnie too. I do real well at both Sears and JCPenneys for him. Sears usually has a $5.00 top/$5.00 bottom deal around this time of the year. Hope this helps.

Diaper pins - They're a lifesaver! You can usually get a set of 4 for about $2 or $3. I would just fold the waistband over an inch weave the pin thru so the fold wouldn't come undone. You can adjust the fold so that the pants are cinched to your liking. The pins have a nice solid locking device so you don't have to worry about it coming undone and pinching the kids. They are long enough and wide enough/designed to go thru bunched fabric so they go easily thru the layers of elastic waistband. You can put them inside or outside of the pants. My kids never noticed it - I always put it in the small of their back/just over the back seam. The best part this way as your ds grows you can adjust the amount you fold over. I think mine came from babies r us or toys r us, but you can probably get them at walmart or target or your local pharmacy/grocery store.

Old Navy has the adjustable waist pants and I've seen some at KMart. Our KMart has some killer clearance items, so keep your eyes peeled!

DS(8) is skinny as well. I always love shorts weather because I can just buy him the right size around and almost any length is OK! (The only thing that's worked so far in pants is Lands End slims, and I do find them expensive. But he hates the interior buttons in the Old Navy adjustable ones.)

OP - If the smaller-size shorts aren't working, will your DS wear cut-offs for playtime - from pants that are too short but still fit around? Then you can determine the length yourself.

And has anyone found sweatpants that run slim????

I have two skinny-minnies and the elastic waist shorts at Children's Place fit them both nicely. :)

I have a very tall skinny mickey DS too. He's 3.5 (weighs about 30 pounds and is close to 40inches tall) and we just did the summer clothes try on, and he's finally outgrown his swimtrunks (the were 12months...and yes he worn them last summer) and the 18month ones we bought off of Disney Shoppping from teeh outlet 2 years ago finally fit (ie...they stay up with out falling down).:thumbsup2

Anyhow we went to JCP a few weeks ago DD and I found a ton of stuff for him. I was able to buy cotton 3t &4t elastic waistband cotton shorts. I specifically wanted that type of short since we are potty training and he has a hard time getting his jeans down by himself. They fit him in the waist and the length was good. I think I paid $5 apiece for them. Now the other thing I was able to find were Nike (on sale for $10) basketball style shorts that were a bit longer in the legs, but I just got a smaller waist size and they fit perfect since they are made longer.

HTH

I can totally identify with clothes not fitting but we have a different problem. DD5 is on the thin side for her height, but hasd muscular legs ect from Dance and gymnastics. I cannot buy slims b/c the don't go over her thighs, but regulars ar too loose in the waist buy the time I get the right length for her. The adjustable waist has been a lifesaver. I have also used the sewing machine to taper the seams a little more in paints without the adjustable waist. They sell a slim at target in little girls and I think little boys sizes. When she was in a 4t for length I found that the little girls 4 slim fit just about right in the waist and was just a smidge longer. Might be worth a shot for a little boy?
