What do you guys think? I gave my DS (14) Nyquil last night because he hasn't slept well due to a bad cold. Now, he is 135 lbs, 5' 6", so he typically gets an adult dose of everything. In this case, 30mg.

This morning - 11 hours later - he was very hard to wake, when he did get up he was dizzy and visibly dazed. I think he almost passed out in the shower.

So I'm thinking that Nyquil doesn't work real well for him (to say the least!) But then I though....11 hours later? Wouldn't it all be out of his system by that time? The side-effects listed include drowsiness and dizziness, but wouldn't that have finished up overnight?

What do you think? Anyone else have similar problems with it? It's my drug-of-choice for a bad cold, but not for him I guess!

I would say it's not the medicine. Even if an adult dose was too much (which I don't think it was), it would still be gone 11 hours later. He's sick, and likely it's like my kids latest sickness.... my kids were sleeping all day for several days.... I am finally getting over it, ans I'm still tired today.

Nyquil knocks me out for a LONG TIME!! I usually only take a half a dose at bedtime because if I take the whole dose I am dizzy and loopy until probably noon. I'm thinking it was the Nyquil, especially if he's not used to taking it.

If I take a half dose (about the same size as your son) I am loopy for about 12 hours afterwards....a whole dose...seriously I am out of commission for at least 16 hours.....I can't handle the stuff!!

Nyquil and I are NOT friends!!! :lmao: Been there done that!!! Except I'm 35 years old! LOL.. I took Nyquil once and had almost the same reaction - and I weigh 125lbs. I literally felt "drunk" the next day - I remember coming out of my bedroom and walking into the wall in the hallway  it took almost two days until I felt normal again. This also happened when I took TavistD (sp) an over the counter sinus medication. Now I steer clear of anything that might cause drowsiness because for me - it's severe. Good luck - and I'd for sure talk to his pediatrician about it and maybe he could offer some suggestions to help DS get some well needed rest. ;)

I need a good 14 hours with NyQuil. I wouldn't worry, but I probably wouldn't give him the NyQuil again, either! :rotfl: If he keeps feeling dizzy like that, though, you may want to take him to the Dr., because he could have an ear infection.

Hope he feels better soon!

Nyquil kicks my butt - I only use it when I know I am able to stay in bed the entire next day. It does the trick for me when I'm sick. Nyquil is not for the casual user.

I have been giving my DS10 Nyquil for the past couple nights, as he is fighting a cold. He is small for his age at about 60lbs. He was taking 2/3 of the adult dose, and was fine in the morning. I would think your son is either very sensitive to some of the ingredients or it is the bug thats making him feel off. Hope he feels better!

Everyone reacts differently to meds. If he metabolizes stuff slowly (like I do) it could certainly be the Nyquil. I think it has the "loopy" effect on many people.

He's close in size/weight to me, and Nyquil wears off of me after no more than ten hours.

I'm wondering if he doesn't have an inner ear infection that's playing havoc with his sense of balance and causing a "brain fog.". It might not actually be a cold, but an URI coupled with an ear infection. If the dizziness continues it's time for a trip to the doctor. In the case of an adult, an antibiotic is almost always warranted for an ear infection. We get them for different reasons than kids do.

This really has nothing to do with weight but how your fast/normal/slow one's liver metabolizes medication.

Thankfully, they have developed a test to determine if people are ultra-metabolizers, normal metabolizers, or poor metabolizers. In the future, once they determine this, medication doses will be prescribed based on how efficient you metabolize medication. Thank God, because I am a poor metabolizer and normal doses of stuff just absolutely wipe me out.

Nyquil can knock some people out for a long time.
I love the stuff!
I can wake up, but DH who is bigger than me has a hard time.

The biggest advantage of NyQuil is that it helps you sleep... a lot. Sleep is often good for what ails you. We tend not to get enough sleep in our rat-race world and, contrary to common belief, you can actually catch up on lost sleep. NyQuil helps you do that.

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences. Excellent point about the inner ear infection. We'll keep an eye on the dizziness for that reason.

It was just like he was drugged this morning (he was) Once I did manage to get him out of bed, he just stared at me blankly. Stood holding the toothbrush like he didn't know what to do with it. Strange.

It is good to hear that others have similar reactions. Me ... I drink it like water whenever I have the sniffles. Not a big deal for me.

This happens to me. Not sure what is in that stuff, but the last time I took Nyquil (probably 15 years ago), I was out of it for a week. :scared1: I mentioned it to the doctor who told me its fairly common for people to have this reaction.

Nyquil is 10% alcohol--obviously not a large amount in a single dose, but nevertheless it is mixed with an antihistamine and other ingredients.

When my DD was 12 I gave her an adult dose of Nyquil one night and OMG, never again! Not only was she groggy the next morning, she looked like she was drunk . . .her pupils were so large . . .she went off to school and her friends asked if she was drunk . . .LOL . . . :rotfl:

I don't think it was the dosage that made her like that, its probably because she can't handle medicine . . .neither can I . . .Triaminic knocks me out . . :lmao:

I always give 2 tsp now instead of 2 tblsp . . .

I have a different problem with Nyquil. I will fall asleep for a few hours but then I wake up with a jolt, my heart starts racing, the room starts spinning and I want to jump out of my skin for the next three or four hours. After the second time it happened I stopped using it. Instead I take the Dayquil, even at night. It treats the same cold symptoms but doesn't have the same side effects.

I have the same problem with Benedryl. I took a normal dose when I was 22 and I slept for 14 hours. It was MISERABLE. I *wanted* to get up, but I was so groggy and dizzy that I couldn't move. And it wasn't because I was sick - I was drugged.

And yeah you would think, since you can take it every 6 hours, that it would be long gone 14 hours later, but it wasn't. I will never take that stuff again unless I have a serious allergic reaction and there's no choice.

And Nyquil - omgosh, I dare not even purchase the stuff!! I think just holding it in my hand would put me in a coma - lol. I can't take ANY kind of cold medicine except for Sudafed (The kind you have to fill out enough paperwork to obtain a mortgage to get :( )
