My daughter and I spent three nights in NYC during Christmas week, and used our points to stay at the Shelburne Murray Hill, between Lexington and 37th.

I was a bit leery at first, having only used points about three years ago to stay at the Plaza - but was pleasantly surprised by the SBMH hotel.

We had a one bedroom unit - which had a relatively spacious living area (spacious by NYC standards), a little kitchen, a large bathroom and a huge master bedroom. The LR couch pulls out and sleeps two, and you can also ask for a cot (which would fit in the room rather comfortably). We had great views of the Chrysler building - and even got to experience snow for the first time in about 7 years :)

The hotel is older, but clean and very well kept. Service was excellent - the doorman was a comedian (and we needed the laughs!) - and overall it was a great experience. The location is wonderful - just a few blocks from major shopping on Madison, Park and 5th - and a hop, skip and a jump from the Empire State Building and Grand Central.

There are many good restaurants very close to the hotel - which is an advantage because the hotel restaurant (called 'Rare') was of mediocre quality and overpriced. My recommendations: try The Black Sheep on Madison for the look and feel of an Irish pub - with decent prices and delicious food. There's also a little Japanese place around the corner from the hotel that was great, and my teenaged daughter and her cousin loved dinner at the Jekyll & Hyde club on 6th ave/55th.

All in all a great experience. If you cannot get ressies at the Plaza for your NYC trips, the Shelburne Murray Hill will suffice. While the hotel lacks the pizzaz of the Plaza, it is certainly an option for those who are looking for something practical, safe and clean :)

Happy New Year

Lisa,

It sounds like you had a nice time in the city. Murray Hill is a nice area! One day I'll have to use our points to go back for a visit.

Here's wishing you and your daughter a happy New Year. It's good to see you posting!

Thanks for sharing, Lisa. We hope to go to NYC one day and try it out. Happy New Year to you & your daughter.

We too stayed at the Plaza two years ago and were happy we did it but not again. I'm glad you liked the Shelburne. We hope to get there soon. My cousin stays at the Shelburne every month when he flies out from the left coast.

Lisa

Thanks for the tip glad you two were able to get away spend some time together in NYC.

Hope all is well with you and your daughter. Prayers and good thoughts for the two of you during the upcoming year.

It is great to hear we have a viable option for NYC. I have a sister in NYC and would love to visit.

Are the points much more reasonable than the plaza?

I think it was about 102 pts for the two nights (27th and 28th), so not sure how that compares w/the Plaza. I believe it was the same # of points but instead of the hotel room, you get a one bedroom unit (kitchen, living room, etc).

we stayed at both places last thanksgiving.........plaza for the macy's parade for 4 nights and then the shelburne for the next three with my buds to go to a monday night football game...........both places are real nice

I am glad to hear that the Shelburne Murry Hill is a nice place. We will be going there next weekend to see "The Lion King," Thanks for the restaurant reviews. :sunny:

We live in NY but hop over to the Shelburne when we go into Manhattan to see a play. We are very satisfied. It's much quieter than the plaza and not nearly as glitzy, but it was perfect for us.

There's also a great Italian resturant about 2 blocks away. Ask at the desk and they'll direct you.

It's good to hear from you Lisa.
