I´m trying to figure out how much we´ll be able to do during our NYC trip. We´ll have 2 1/2 days (saturday, sunday and half of monday). We´ll like to see:

Empire State Building
Grand Central Station
Ground Zero (+ St. Pauls Chapel)
FAO Schwartz
Times Square
Statue of Liberty
Brooklyn Bridge
Central Park
Little Italy
Chinatown
5th Avenue
Greenwich village???
UN Headquarters ???

Is this doable?

Depends on if you want to "see" them or visit them. Sounds like a lot to me but if the weathers good and you can figure out the subway rides beforehand you should be able to get most if not all of it in. Be prepared for long days. Monday will be harder to get much done with everyone coming back into the city to work.

I have a bunch of my girlfriends coming in from out of town in April and I am trying to figure this out myself-I live right outside NYC, but rarely go in(did today though-saw Beauty and the Beast on Broadway-we loved it!) and since I did half teh stuff peopel love to do on field trips in school I am a little lost trying to think of what everyone might like--
Anyway-I decided to get tickets for the dorky red tourist buses-you can hop on and off throughtout the city-and the tciket is good for 48 hours.
This way you can get from uptown to midtown to downtown and not have to deal with subways.

Did you find a good deal for the buses? I think they´re quite expensivem considering we´re 2 adults and 4 kids.

Here are some links to help you plan:

There is so much to do in NYC. Don't run yourself ragged running downtown, uptown, etc. Try to group your activities so you don't need to take taxis, busses or subways more than 2-3 times per day.

I'd probably do one of the bus tours or circle line boat tours to give yourself a general feel for the city. Then pick a few other attractions to visit.

Enjoy

PS: I'm pretty sure you know have to make reservations to see the statue of liberty and they can fill up months in advance. An easy alturnative is to take the Staten Island Ferry. It's cheap, you'll pass pretty close to it. You just won't stop on the island.

I'm not an expert or anything, but it definitely sounds doable to me. I went to NYC with 5 friends over the summer. We had 2 full days and 2 half days, and our list was pretty similar to yours. A lot of the things like Grand Central Station are just things to "see" rather than "do," so they don't take much time. We also read that it takes a long time to actually go to the statue of liberty, so we just went to Liberty Park in NJ the night we got there to see the statue and the skyline.

This is everything we did:
Liberty Park
dinner at the Life Cafe in the East Village
brunch at Noho Star
split up - half of us saw BatB on Broadway, half went to a Yankees game
dinner in the theatre district
Times Square
Central Park Zoo
shopping on 5th Avenue
lunch at a deli
CBGB so one of my friends could buy a tshirt
shopping in SoHo
dinner and walking around in Chinatown
tour of the UN building
Grand Central Station
Ground Zero
pizza in Little Italy

We were pretty exhausted by the time we left, but a big part of that was that it was the middle of July and it was 100 degrees every day.

Oh yeah, and in the opinion of 6 19-21 year olds, the Toys R Us in Times Square is WAY cooler than the FAO Schwartz! We spent forever in there!

Where will you be staying? Is the half day the day you arrive or the day you leave?

Ohh yes thats true--I found $49, but for us-we are each paying for just one person, no kids, no husbands allowed,;) so its not bad.If it was one family, its not as good a deal for sure!

If you want, I'm going into NY tonight so I'll pick up a subway map and mail it to you.

Depending where you are staying, I would say see things in that area for your half day. Did you want to just see the Statue of Liberty or visit it? Same question about the Brooklyn Bridge. I don't know your childrens ageas, but I think that no kids under 5 are allowed for the UN tour (double check that).

I would do Ground Zero, Statue of Liberty, Little Italy, China Town, Greenwhich Village and the Brooklyn Bridge the same day. There really isn't much to Little Italy (only a couple of blocks) or China town. Just really walking around a bit and looking at the pressed duck in the windows lol.

Get tickets ahead of time for the Empire State building and hit that first thing in the morning. I'd try to be on line for when it opens.

My DD, mom and I went for 2 full and 1/2 day and saw the following:

Broadway show (Beauty and the Beast)
Empire State Building
Ground Zero
FAO Schwartz
Times Square (where we stayed)
Statue of Liberty
Central Park
Chinatown
5th Avenue
American Girl Place
Rockerfeller Plaza

I would say, depending on how old your kids are, don't miss the Museum of Natural History and the Central Park Zoo. Both are great for kids. The CP Zoo was such a quaint, oldfashioned kind of place. Low key. THe MNH was featured in the movie "Night at the Museum" (which was great). You could easily spend days in there, but if you just want to hit the highlights (for us it was dinos and the dioramas), you could do it in a few hours.
Have fun...I can't wait to go back. My kids love NYC. And some of your best moments will probably be people-watching. I'll never forget the look on my kids' face when they saw the Naked Cowboy in Times Sq (He sings & plays guitar in his underwear and a cowboy hat)...Only in NY!

I think that the things to do in Little Italy and Chinatown are eat! Use those as places for meals, not sightsee. Little Italy is a lot smaller than when I was a kid (I grew up in NY).
