NYC instead of WDW this year. Why am I so depressed about this?

First of all, I should be grateful for what I have and not complain. So, I guess I'm using this board to vent instead of friends and family. Sorry, folks.

Dh and I went back and forth about going to WDW for xmas this year. We were just there in April and Dh wasn't interested in a trip so soon. But he would go if that would make me happy. Ds (12) would go to WDW or NYC, but preferred NYC b/c he's never been there. We went round and round btw. NYC, WDW and staying home. Finally decided to go to NYC this year and go to WDW next xmas and combine it with a xmas trip to see family in Fla. (they had other company this year.) Dh kept asking, "Are you sure?"

Part of the reason I went for NYC was b/c I'm becoming such a travel weenie. I used to love to travel anyplace, but now I get nervous being out of my comfort zone. WDW is in my comfort zone. I love being there. I used to go to NYC a couple times/year to visit friends. Now I feel like it's just going to be a big hassle.

So, we leave tomorrow and I just feel like crying. Gee, I hope I get excited when I get to NYC! It will be fun, right? What has happened to me? Is it middle age or WDW?

Dont be depressed!

You can still get your disney fix while you are in nyc...go to the world of disney store on 5th avenue or try to catch one of the Disney Plays on Broadway there are a bunch Lion King, Mary Poppins, Tarzan and now they just opened the little mermaid.

I understand about WDW being in your comfort zone but NYC is SAFE!!! you just have to use common sense.

Go see the Tree in Rockerfeller center, go ice skating, go to the south street seaport, go see the statue of liberty, ellis island, go to the top of the empire state building. go eat in a fabulous restaurant (they are all over the place)..and SMILE

In a lot of ways NYC is like WDW, if you really think about it.

For one thing, the hassle of driving is probably not there, right? You aren't going to drive around are you? You arrive at LGA or wherever and get a cab and never drive again.

If you know NYC, remember how fun it is to walk around at Christmas! It's very Disneylike in that it is elaborately beautiful. Wait until you see how cool the Disney Store on 5th Ave looks.

Try to get little Mermaid tickets and if you can't for sure see Mary Poppins! My friends just had brunch at Tavern on the Green and when crazy over the Christmas decorations!

You'll have fun!

NYC is awesome. You've got lights! You've got crowds! You've got 3 Disney shows if you can get tickets! (Though personally I recommend some of the fantastic non-musical PLAYS that are out there right now!! If you must see a Disney show, Mary Poppins is probably the only one you'll be able to get legitimate tickets for. I'd avoid The Little Mermaid until it's open and "locked" as they're in previews and sadly I'm hearing the same kind of things I heard about Tarzan...which means not good. Word is they're not making the changes that NEED to be made but just doing little tinkery things. That's what sank "The Pirate Queen".)

Heck... Saks 5th Avenue even has *everyone stare in wonder* lights chorepgraphed to music! Who knew they could do that?!?!? (Yes, that last bit is sarcasm. We locals get tired of the sidewalk being blocked by people gaping at the side of a building like they've never seen choreographed lights before.)

Seriously, as much of a pain as the crazy crowds are for us locals, it is a magical place ~ all the tie really, not just at Christmas. But like Disney, keep your guard up. (I guess that's probably the most glaringly obvious difference ~ people DO actually LIVE in New York City...and sometimes tourists forget that we have to get to jobs, families and homes and that it's not just a big old playground.)

Actually, Tarzan closed in July. It did NOT do well ~ because Disney didn't listen to what people said in the try-out and in previews and didn't make changes that could have made it FANTASTIC. Sadly I'm hearing they're doing the same with Ariel and crew.

I actually saw the little mermaid last night! It was just ok! the girl that played Ariel was FANTASTIC the rest of the voices of the cast and crew were EXCELLENT also!

I think what made is just ok was the COSTUMES!!! they were TERRIBLE especially for a disney production. and to make them seem like they were swimming underwater all the characters were wearing HEELIES..it was ridiculous..they could of thought of something better than that

Yeah. I haven't seen it yet, but from what I've heard from people who saw the out of town tryout and have seen it here have said that the things that the try out audiences reacted badly to are not what's been tinkered with to improve (a lot of those centered around the costumes, especially Ursula's). I hate to think it, but that's what sunk The Pirate Queen ~ not listening to test audiences and taking their feedback into acvcount. (I know that's not Disney, so TLM will probably end up being ok.)

I do want to see it. I just have to wait until I can get decent cheap balcony seats. LOL. I can't believe Disney of all producers doesn't offer a student rush! UGH!! (They did for Tarzan, but that was to help fill the theatre, not out of generosity. lol.)

I did know about the Heelies. I've joked that I MUST see it to make my viewing of shows on skates complete. (I saw Starlight Express and I've seen Xanadu multiple times.)

I understand you completely. We have gone to WDW every year and this year my parents have decided that we need a change so they picked L.A. I know that we get to spend 2 days in Disneyland and Califonia Adventure but it just isn't the same as spotting the Epcot Ball as we try and find Port Orleans Riverside(even though we stay there every year) Nowhere is the same as WDW and that is why I hope to work there in 2 years.

Thank you for your kind replies. We came home from NYC yesterday. We had a wonderful trip! It was very festive with all the holiday happenings. Even though it had been years since I'd been to the city, I felt very comfortable there right away. We saw Mary Poppins and loved it. Got the tickets at the TCKTS booth. Also saw Spelling Bee and liked that. The sidewalks on Fifth ave and near Rockefeller Center were jammed, but it was so much fun. I'm a very fast walker and it sometimes drives my dh nuts (especially at WDW.) I always say he exaggerates how fast I walk. In NYC, he claims that no one ever passed me on the sidewalk. We skated at Bryant Park, saw the store windows and lights, Statue of Liberty, Top of the Rock, Met, MOMA. I kept stopping to buy roasted nuts every 15 feet. It was great!

Hopefully, if we can get passed the temptation of a spring trip to WDW, we'll go next xmas. Although right now, I'm so tired I just want to stay home.

I also love Disney and it usually my first choice for a vacation. Many of my friends don't get it. Boy are they missing out on loads of fun!!
