We try to take a NYC weekend trip a few times a year. We have never used the concierge collection....well, we had a few points to "spare" this year. I tried to book yesterday for the Regency. No availability. (in all fairness, we are going in two weeks!!!) so, I figured to try the Shelburne. They had availability, so I booked a one bedroom suite. It will be me, DH, DS8, and DD6. Even tho I have been to NYC many times (and used to work there!!!!) I really know nothing about the Murray Hill neighborhood.
any reviews on the hotel (yes, I tried the search feature, just thoguht someone else might want to give their opinion)

Thanks!!!!!

I have stayed there but I didnt stay on points. We stayed there in 2004. I have been to NYC four or five times and believed the Murray Hill neighborhood to be convenient to the Theater District as well as most places we wanted to go. (We were there for a long weekend) Our room was clean and nice but we were put in a smoking room at first. We really tried to stay there but could not so we called the front desk to see if there were any other rooms available. The staff was VERY nice and went out of their way to move us to another room that was actually much nicer and bigger.
I am not from a big city and find it difficult to sleep when we visit NYC because of the noise but I found this to be a quieter section of the city than other places.
The staff was great to offer suggestions to eat and nice. You say you have been to NYC so I dont need to tell you the rooms arent going to be as big as any Disney resort. (I have friends that have never been to NYC and are surprised by the size of most rooms) Other than the smaller rooms than usual, I thought it was very nice. The kitchenette in our room was small but seemed to be somewhat nicely equipped. We did not use our kitchen AT ALL so I really did little more than look inside so I cant help much there. I hope that helps. Have a great trip!

Hi, we've stayed at the Shelburne at least six times and have always had a great experience. (We are not DVC members and paid cash.)

The hotel staff is very accommodating and the facilities are great: nice bar off the lobby, and small but nice gym area in the basement.

The neighborhood is quiet, yet a short walk to Grand Central or 42nd street to grab a cab.

As the previous poster noted, the rooms are typical NYC - small. However, they are well appointed. The Shelburne is part of a group of hotels that are (I believe ) made up of old apartment buildings. So, they are well taken care of because they are part of a big corporation. I think it is call Affinia. You may be able to google them for more info.

Have a great trip!

Michele

Michele is correct that they are part of a larger group of apartment buildings turned hotel -- I wish they would add them all to the Concierge Collection.

The area where the Shelburne is located is a mix of business & residential. I think it's 38th & Lex. Of course, this also makes it a short walk to Grand Central and actually not that far from Times Square and just about anything else in Midtown -- Rockefeller Center, shopping on Madison, etc. You also have easy access to Grand Central as a transportation hub.

UPdated:::

Just wanted to give a quickie 'review" of the Shelburne from our stay. We had a one bedroom with a full kitchen. By NYC standards, it was quite large, but for those used to DVC accomodations, it will be small. We were pleased the room was clean, hotel was very quiet. It is sort of in a quiet residential area, not too far from Grand Central Station....we usually prefer to be closer to Central park...but we found the area to still be convenient to the Times Sqare area...but to go to Central park on a hot August day, we definitley took a cab!!!! Around the block from the hotel is a D'Agostino's supermarket...you can buy groceries to take back to your room. We bought breakfast type items. Every other meal we ate out. One morning, we DID EAT at the hotel restaurant...they had an all you eat breakfast for $12 a person...typical breakfast food of eggs, bacon, sausage and cereal. It was myself, DH, DS8, and DD6....they only wound up charging us for 3 people due to the little kids eating less...I thought that was nice!
Would we stay there again? probably...we found it to be a nice perk for our DVC membership to be able to trade out in the concierge collection....and having a favorable turn out this time makes me want to try more trades....maybe next time I will try II. (I know all the mentions of it not being worth the points, etc...but for us....it was nice since we had some points to "burn" and were going to NYC anyway!!!!) Dh and son took the subway up to the Bronx to see the Yankees and had a great time! DD and I headed to Broadway to see "Hairspary" and also had a nice time!!!!!

If anyone has any more questions....just ask!!!!!

mbw, it was nice to read your report of your NYC stay. I miss going to NYC and I imagine that one day, we will do something like that too, and we'll do it while we're actually in Cape May for a month. I would also like to go to DC from our Cape May starting point.

If we drive in to NYC, is there parking at the hotel?

We just pulled up to the front of the hotel and they valet parked the car for us. I think it was $23 per 24 hour period.
