You need to be more specific....when for instance.

I have gotten airfare from $250 pp to over $400 pp from NY to LAX.

I would set up a daily fare alert search on kayak.com or something for your specific travel dates. I've recently (like 2 weeks ago) seen fares as low as $211 RT over spring break (from the DC area). Airfares fluctuate daily so the best thing in my book is to watch them & when I see one that's acceptable grab it.

I agree with mmouse37--your question can't be answered without more information. Airfare will vary depending on the following variables:
(1) Dates
(2) Preferred flight times
(3) Number of passengers

You can use Orbitz, Travelocity, etc., but sometimes if you go directly to the carrier's website, it is possible that you can get a lower fare. It takes a lot of researching to get the best fares, but it can be done!

If you are traveling before the end of May, American Airlines is having a good sale right now. I'm sad because my airfare is $100 cheaper per person right now but I booked a non-refundable ticket 2 months ago.

Kayak.com will compare all of the airlines directly AND those same travel sites! It is literally one stop shopping!! It does it for you AND gives you the links to go to them in one swoop! I get an email from them every morning with the routes I like to watch. It tells me how much the alert started at and how much it was yesterday - complete with a graph. I really, really recommend you check it out!!!!! It totally eliminates all of that website hopping and is not a pain to research at all.
