Hello!

DH and I just got back from a simply spectacular (though it didn't start that way...) trip to WDW! This is my very first attempt at writing a trip report, so we'll see how it goes.

Background Information

Who:

2qjccr8.jpg

Me - 27 years old. I took my first trip to WDW (with my friend's family, I've never been with my own) when I was 16, visited a few more times while in Orlando in the subsequent years, and stayed onsite for the first time when I was 25 during our honeymoon. I never want to stay offsite again! I am the "planner," but I run things by DH to make sure he's OK with everything.

DH - also 27 years old (12 hours older than me, to be precise). He was 5 when he first visited and was 12 (and, unfortunately, in an "I'm too cool for this" stage) during his second trip. His third trip was with me (honeymoon) and he says I helped him fall in love with Disney all over again! :lovestruc

What:

Our 2nd anniversary/graduate school graduation trip extravaganza!

Where:

2rmy3qv.jpg

Disney's Wilderness Lodge

When:

July 23, 2011 to July 30, 2011

Why:

After much debate (aka convincing), DH and I decided to honeymoon in WDW after our June 2009 wedding. To be more specific, we booked the "Land and Sea" package through the Disney Cruise Line, which I don't think exists anymore. We opted to do 4 days on land and 3 at sea and selected the Polynesian as our resort. And...that was the extent of our (aka my) planning. Imagine my surprise when we tried to eat dinner at sit-down restaurants and were turned away! We also felt a bit rushed, especially considering the fact that the 4 days was more like 3.5. We decided that we HAD to return so we could "do it right" and the planning began. Yes...two years in advance. We wanted to wait until we were both done with graduate school and could save a little more money.

The "Reconnaissance" Trip:

We shared pictures from our honeymoon with DH's family on Christmas Eve 2009. His sister made an offhand comment about how we should all go down for Christmas the following year. MIL called a week after that to tell us she was planning a trip for the family and all we had to do was pay for airfare. WHAT?!?!? We were floored! After she researched it a bit more, the trip changed from Christmas to summer, but she and FIL were still paying for everyone! I was happy, but concerned because I was worried that DH would say our trip would no longer be necessary. Fortunately, he did not and he even suggested that we use this family trip for reconnaissance. And we did. For example, we spent time exploring resorts we had never visited to see where we might like to stay for our trip (we fell for WL after eating dinner at Artist Point). We also got a better feel for how EMH work and how we would want to utilize them. So, quality time with DH's family + getting ideas for our trip = a win-win situation!

Well, I think that's it for the background information. Stay tuned for trip details! :goodvibes

I'm in! I am using your trip report to help pass the time until my trip in 16 days!

Hello again and thanks for joining me! :)

DH and I wanted to try something completely different this time around for our arrival day. Our last two trips (aka the only 2 we've taken together) started with SUPER early flights, meaning absolutely no sleep the night before, and hitting the parks immediately after checking in at the resort. Last year, we were actually awake for more than 24 hours straight because we happened to arrive on the day that MK had EMH until 3am and MIL wanted to take full advantage. Needless to say, we were tired. And we were tired for the rest of the trip. We vowed that would not be the case this time! So we booked an early afternoon flight and made plans to check in, hop a bus to DTD, eat dinner Raglan Road, and shop. None of the parks had EMH scheduled for the following morning, so we knew we were going to get as much rest as possible. We were pumped!

Well, fate had other plans. I had actually written out an incredibly long and detailed post about all the crazy, unlucky things that happened to us the day we left for WDW...but I somehow lost it before I could post. After giving it some thought, I've decided that maybe the gods of the internet were trying to tell me that I was just being a whiny brat and no one wanted to hear it. In my defense, when you've been planning something for 2 years, you really want it to be perfect. But I guess all you really need to know is, our day started with this:

and ended with this:

A surprise upgrade to a courtyard view room! (We had booked standard)

and...

A champagne toast from a very friendly and accommodating waitstaff at Whispering Canyon Cafe, who really helped us get back in the Disney spirit after an incredibly awful beginning to our vacation.

I'm still sad that we missed our ADRs at Raglan (since we didn't get to WL until 10pm), but there's always next time, right?

Ugh! I hate last minute flight cancellations! Glad you guys made it to Disney!

We get no details on how it all happened?

Either way I am happy you were enjoying it by the end of the day and that you got your taste of Disney magic:goodvibes

You have me hooked already:) SOrry your trip started out so crummy, but you did end the day in WDW so that's pretty much better than any other day :)

disneylovin24 - I'm trying not to dwell, haha! :goodvibes

WOW! I am SO surprised that it took me this long to come back! In my defense, I'm a teacher and I have spent a LOT of time recently getting ready for the upcoming school year...and enjoying as much sunshine as possible! But, back to the report!

As I said earlier, we were surprised to find out that we were given an upgrade to a courtyard view room. I've read about others experiencing random pixie dust like this, but didn't really think it would happen to us. I was absolutely over the moon excited about it! After our lovely dinner at WCC, I practically ran to the elevators, dragging DH behind me. I hit the button for the 6th floor and after a long journey through the hallways (we later found a more convenient elevator for our location) we saw our door:

And in we went!

Immediately I noticed there was only one bed in the room. The upgrade started making more sense. I turned to my right to look in the bathroom:

AHA. Now the upgrade was making a lot of sense. We were given a room with a king bed that was handicapped accessible. My guess is that no other guests happened to require this specific room type at the time of our stay, so the standard view room (presumably with 2 queen beds) that we were supposed to end up with went to a family of 4 instead. I must admit that a little bit of the magic was lost when I thought about this (probable) practical business maneuvering on Disney's part. BUT the view brought it back!

Unfortunately, a little more magic was lost the following day after I took my first shower in the "shower room."

You can't really see much of it in the picture, but there was an immovable bench against the wall, which was great for organizing shampoo and such, but not so great for actually trying to stand under the water flow from the shower head. I understand how the set-up would be perfect for a person who needs it, but for us, it just made the act of showering insanely awkward because we were essentially stuck in one little corner. Have I mentioned the view was great?

The bed was comfortable, but a little low:

Mickey was waiting to greet us, of course:

Overall, we thought the room was clean and we loved all the little details that really brought out the theme of the resort. Was it dark? Yes, but that goes with the theme (in my opinion anyway). Plus it's nice for taking naps! Was it a little worn? Yes, there were a few cracks in the tiles in the bathroom, some scuff marks on the walls...but as I said, it was clean. And it was comfortable.

After taking in the room for a few minutes, I suddenly realized that our luggage was not there. We had been told at the airport that it was supposed to go on the next direct flight to Orlando (which, ironically we couldn't get on because it was full). When I called Magical Express to let them know about our travel changes, I was assured that they would collect the bags and bring them to our resort. So, of course, I started freaking out (for about the 100th time that day). I ran over to the phone and called Bell Services...and our luggage was delivered within 5 minutes. And thus ended the last freak-out of the trip!

DH and I did some quick late-night exploration of the resort (mainly to figure out the best route to get to Roaring Fork for breakfast) and then went to bed to rest up for our first morning in the parks!
