Now versus then 9/11

I often wonder how different 9/11 might have been if we had had communication tools like twitter and Facebook back then.
Two years ago I scoffed at the thought of either of those social networks having any kind of real value but I think different now.

What are your thoughts?

Wow, thats really interesting. Never thought of it, and I don't think it could have prevented it from happening, but it could have saved lives. Wow.

I don't know about 9/11 but I have seen Facebook truly work miracles. Last year in Nashville we suffered a terrible flood...so many lost their homes, there was no power, no cell service, no internet. However most of us could still get FB through our phones...3G somehow still worked. It was our lifeline, especially for my friends who were truly stuck in their homes...we were able to send boats out to rescue them. For weeks afterward if anyone needed something...food, bottled water, tools, manpower... all we had to do was post it and people came. It actually gave me chills that a social networking outlet had that kind of power.

Thousands more documentations of people who didn't make it. Hearing third hand via the news about phone calls is sad enough.

I don't know if it would have saved lives though. Didn't they begin evacuating the building when the first plane hit and then with the second plane? I have a hard time envisioning how it would have sped things up.
