I use a lowly Canon Digital Rebel with even lowlier (is that even a word?) Sigma 18-125 lens. Shutter 'pressed' via cable remote. The camera was standing on a 13 year old Manfrotto tripod with a ball head.

The settings for the one with red colours is f/13, shutter: 2 sec, Manual mode, ISO100.

The settings for the previous one is f/10, shutter: 2 sec, Manual mode, ISO100.

What I meant is "lowly" in terms of dSLR. I don't think you can find anything cheaper than the dRebel. Also for lens, I also don't think you can get anything cheaper than the 18-125 Sigma.

As far as Wishes go, this is where digital shines. Just keep snapping. One of them bound to be good. For this 'session' of Wishes I took close to 20 pictures and only about 5 are acceptable to me.

it's funny how people always ask a photographer what camera he uses, as if that is what made the picture great.

imagine asking a master carpenter what hammer he uses,,or asking a great artist what paint brush he used...LOL



it helps to have good tools, but it's the eye , knowledge and experience of a good photographer that makes the difference..

a good experienced photographer makes the best of the weather, knowing that an overcast day, actually provides more even lighting than a sunny day...

and most often makes sure they are in the right place at the right time..anticipating the action..


luck makes the once in a lifetime photo possible, but the things I mentioned make for consistantly great shots..

The Old West Part 3 . . . . .

Just got back from the World (Jan 19-22 at AKL and Jan 22-27 at OKW) and had a great time. We are so glad to be back

Anyways thought I would post a couple pics taken with a Canon Powershot S1 IS (I did take more, around 500, but I'm still going through them!)

First, a Wishes fireworks shot from the Plaza restaurant terrace taken without a tripod/monopod:

Second, a shot of Expedition Everest from our balcony at AKL (room 5030, great view ) taken with my new Giotto P-pod monopod using the removable legs (which begs the question, is it really a monopod )

I wanted to thank everyone here for their great advice, I have been picking up some great tips, especially for low light photographs, tha came in real handy this trip!

My digital is also the "lowly" Canon Rebel with a Canon 28-135mm IS lens. I also added the battery pack for bulk (not to mention the extra power). The remote control works well for being in the shot.

The Rebel may be the "low-end" model but it works very well.
