November/December WISH Walkers and Runners Training Thread

No, I skipped the costume for this one, so I'm pretty sure we didn't see each other. I'm glad you came out to watch. That wasn't the best weather for standing around in, and I'm sure your friends appreciated you being there. Even though my time was okay (4:12), my race wasn't all that great. I had really severe cramps that locked up my leg a few times and made me step really gingerly for the last few miles. Still, at least I didn't get stuck at the train like the people who started in the first few corrals. ;)

Congrats on your time! :thumbsup2

One of my friends was in corral 5 and was delayed around four minutes by the train. I see that Union Pacific issued an apology. They also have a link to adjust your time if impacted by the train.

My spectating wasn't all that great either. Hats off to people that come out to support runners. My people were strung out from corral 2 to I'm not even sure how far back. My plan was to catch people at miles 2, 8, 10 and 11/25 roughly. I ended up watching at the 3.6 mile mark and then the finish only. It was pretty tough trying to pick out people with a sea of runners early on in the race.

Thanks! :)

It's a lot easier for runners to pick out people in the crowd, that's for sure. My running partner and I saw the same guy with the same sign (I Love Fast Women) at four or five places along the course. She nicknamed him the dirty old man, and we had a great time joking with him every time he popped up. It's the small things that keep you laughing during a race and focused on something other than the monotony of 26.2 miles. :)

We did the Lightfest 8k in Dearborn Heights (MI) last night. It is a race that kicks off a Christmas light show at Hines Park. For those that have done the Martian Marathon, it is the same course. It was cold and rainy, but a fun event. I would recommend it to anyone in/near Michigan.

Glad to see everyone is getting ready for Marathon Weekend!

Happy Training!

3.25 miles in the rain. Pretty proud of my puppy. She doesn't like rain or sprinklers (some water dog she is!) so I figured I'd give it a try and turn back if she decided she didn't like it.

She did well. We ran fairly well for my 1st true run back after being sick. Considering we had to stop for traffic since it was parent-teacher night at the school in the sub. Slowed at corners also to avoid slipping on wet leaves.

But all in all we had fun.

Tonight is the gym again.

Those that run with dogs, have you tried those Zukes treats made for hiking and running? Or rather has your dog tried them? ;)

Happy training!

I had to look them up - they look very interesting! I might have to pick up a pack of them for when Jack and I get into our longer runs!

When training for the Goofy last year, I used Natural Balance semi-dry dog food (those rolls you can buy at the pet store), cut into chunks. It's easy to carry and it has some moisture content, so your dog doesn't need to drink a lot of water when he eats it. We always stopped at the same places where there were water fountains (Jack's choice - he wouldn't drink anything if we stopped before the first water fountain at the 5 mile point) and I gave him a few chunks of the food along with some water from my water bottle. I started out carrying a small Ziploc bag and filling it with water for Jack to drink from, but he quickly learned how to drink as I squirted water from my water bottle into his mouth. Made water stops fast and easy. :thumbsup2

Hey! It's been over a year from my last post....but DH, BIL, some friends, and I are running the marathon in January so thought I would check in. Have to admit, there are lots of people I don't know yet, but eager to learn.
Happy training all! WDW is coming up fast.
I am actually getting ready to enter taper madness due to me running Charlotte, NC's Thunder Road Marathon on 12/11/10. So once taper maddness takes over, I don't know what I may post...;)

Hi Sara-Rose, I'll have to check out that Natural Balance too :) Keely uses a collapsible bowl (Disney of course!).

Christa! Welcome home! :flower3:

I did hit the gym tonight :yay: Did 2 miles on the TM, 2.3 miles on the elliptical and the usual upper body machines.

Monday at the gym I talked with another girl I know was trying to run. But got sick at the same time as me. Add in the time change and she now doesn't want to run outside. She was doing the Couch to 5K & while not loving it was getting there but now it's dark out and not as pleasant. I personally like to run in the dark around the sub since I can zone a bit more. Not focus on how far away that corner is, not dodge tons of people but at the same time those people sure are nice company that is not there at night.

Last year when I started running at night it was this time of year. The Christmas decorations were all coming out. I had shoveled snow and thought hey I'm warmed up why not. I actually started to WANT to go running after work and had to watch skipping the gym. I really enjoyed the Christmas decorations, a nice distraction and what a great way to enjoy them instead of just driving by :)

So if your finding it a bit harder to go out and do miles after work in the dark at the late late hour of 6 pm ( :scared1: ) check out the Christmas decorations. Currently we have both Turkeys and Christmas in my neighborhood. I'm hoping more lights will show up this weekend and next. I told myself last year to get out and enjoy because I'd sure miss the decorations come Feb.

For Halloween we had 2 specific characters Keely and I had to check out on our runs. Poor Scooby Doo he was always having bad days leaving him a bit down and deflated. Frankie was cute then that yard went darker with spider webs and scary stuff. I wanted to beg for Frankie's return and Keely wanted to run on the opposite of the street (ok, not really she just wanted to get home).

Enjoy the season!

Diane, I love running at night and completely agree about the Christmas lights. They make those cold December runs a lot more pleasant.

Well, I see Frank's cute photo is back up...glad you are out of "trouble"

I ran the Santa Scramble 5K yesterday in Concord NC. It was the first entry in the Christmas parade and billed as a fast race. Too bad it is done the "old way"... run, get your number at finish, turn it in and wait to see when results are posted.

I came down with a horrible cold on Monday, but had set a goal to break 25 minutes in the race so I pushed all week sucking on menthol drop to breathe during running. I think I did it, but would love to know for sure. I did get 3rd in my age group...a big surprise. I have never placed in a race.

It was a beautiful sunny day, race started around 2:30pm, and had lots of people waiting to watch parade.

Joan Congrats on your 5k result. Hope you get your time soon. Our town's fun run is also done the old way. Pretty neat how fast & easy chip timing is.

Diane I was thinking as I walked to the gym the other night for yoga that there was no way I could run in the dark. I just know I would find every bit of bad pavement, ruts, sidewalk cracks, etc.

Christa Glad you stopped by to say hello. Once a WISH er, always a WISHer. Good luck with your marathon.

Had a LOOOONNGGG weekend drive to Iowa and back to watch DD run in the Division 3 XC Nationals. And am pleased to report that I now have an All-American! She finished 24th, and her team took 3rd. So while the drive was a b__l buster, the end result was great. Even without a great result it was worth it.

After getting in at 1:30 this morning, I did drag myself out this morning for 10 miles, fairly easy and no Garmin. Have slighly sore hips, not sure if it is yoga-related or running related. Might need new shoes, which would be somewhat disappointing from a durability standpoint.

Funny you should mention that Maura. :upsidedow I managed to find a bit of sidewalk that was up a bit. Usually I just run with it, this time it tripped me up bad enough that I flew. Landed on my knee and annoyed my arm. This was last Thursday. Took Friday off. And did something like 15 - 16 miles. Something because my Garmin died at 7.12 and didn't get new batteries till I hit the house again.

That part of sidewalk I run on ALL them time. It's less than a 0.25 mile from my house and on my out and back no matter what I run.

Happy SAFE training! :) Let's try to stay upright and not planted on the pavement like I did ;)

Got my 18 miler in tonight. The weather has been outstanding here (65 at the time I headed out) so I had to take advantage of it.

So far so good with the training. I'm really hopping the warmer than usual weather sticks around until Christmas.

Diane - Glad you are OK from your Fall. Sounds like the Goofy training is in kicking butt! Oh and yes I did originally sign up for the Marathon at Wine and Dine, but then switched to the Half so you are not crazy. :rotfl2:

Frank - Great job on the 18 miles. I know what you mean about the weather here it has been awesome.

Maura - Congrats to your daughter and her team and to you for making that long a** drive.

AFM I'm finding myself with even less free time training for the half than Goofy the last two years. My oldest daughter has practice 4 days a week and girl scouts mixed in so she's keeping me busy. :lmao: My runs have been fantastic as of late and it's great to just get out and run. The weather has been darn near perfect so that's certainly not hurting anything. Now what I really need to work on is getting back to eating healthier. I'm hoping that happens soon. :rolleyes1

The weather has been awesome here! I hope it continues. Running an 8k on Thanksgiving day.

Hi everyone. I've been reading but not posting a lot. Still training for the January 1/2 (which will be my first). I ran my first ever race this weekend. The Rothman 8K in Philly. LOVED IT! 11 min/mile pace (which for me is good). Have a 9 mile long run to do this weekend so I will have to see how to squeeze that in admist all the family/holiday stuff. Overall the training is going well and I'm having a lot of fun. Since every long run is farther than I've ever gone before it's like haveing a PR every week. :goodvibes Very motivating. :thumbsup2

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!!

Chris so where will you be on that Sunday??? Are you planning on "goofing off" on Saturday or do you have a PR your chasing? I was wondering if your daughter was doing that again this year. Basketball? Are you coaching this year?

Frank Way to go on the 18 miles!!!!:cheer2:

Lolakat Congrats on your 1st ever race!!! Woohooo!!! :woohoo::cheer2::woohoo::cheer2: Sounds like the training is going wonderful :)

Joan have fun with your Thanksgiving race! :)

For me, I hit the gym last night and did the usual. You know cursed the TM, made faces at the class while I did the weights and then whined while on the ellipitcal (I wonder if that is why the Zumba music keeps getting louder? LOL)

and I think I finally figured out what AFM means! :lmao:

Have a great day everyone!!!

Yeah :cheer2: Yeah :cheer2: Yeah :cheer2:

results from Santa Scramble 5K (11/20) are up.
I did it...I broke 25min.
24.10

Joan That's a spectacular time...congrats!

lolakat Keep up the great training!

Diane
and then whined while on the ellipitcal (I wonder if that is why the Zumba music keeps getting louder?
Priceless!

As for me....cranberry relish-done; turkey base (for gravy)--done; cornbread for stuffing-done. Training? Oh yeah, right...6 miles in speedwork on the TM and yoga today. Gotta keep the calorie burn rate high----the stuffing recipe alone has 2 sticks of butter in it!!!!!
