November 5th 2011 Eastern on the Magic

I'm so lucky:woohoo:.....my mom works a swing shift so she will be up anyway, to book our excursions for us at midnight. Didn't mention it in my original post but my mom booked a room beside us. This will be her 1st cruise. Thank God for my mom, because I'm sleepy now!

OH NC2WDW... you are so lucky you get to go to bed... Our baseball got cancelled due to the fields wet and I am ready to go to bed.... two more hours.. We can make it, I hope! I have to get up at 6a... Early to bed tomorrow :)

Daniellenbella: Hope Bella has a great sleep over
Kathy: Alaska would be beautiful... Darcie is in the same boat with the darkness... It took her a while to get use to that and more daylight in the summer, and not being able to sleep as it was so light out.

Tanya

BTW Tanya, I'm watching Thurs's Big Brother right now, missed it since we were driving to my mom's to go camping. I missed tonight's show though b/c our cable is out :( I guess I know what I'll be doing at work tomorrow morning! Love that CBS has the episodes online!

OH I won't spoil it for you, if my ball wasn't cancelled I would be watching it at work too, though Meghan likes it as well and doesn't like when I do that, but I am dying to find out what happens :)
Who are your favorites on the show?
I like of course Jeff and Jordan, I use to like Bradon and Rachel but boy they are cry babies hahaha

I know what happens b/c I read it online on Thurs night after we got to my mom's. I couldn't wait! But I don't know what happened tonight yet. I love Jeff & Jordan! Can't stand Rachel, liked Brendon last year, but the two of them are so annoying this year. I like Shelly too. I hope she makes it to the end with Jeff & Jordan.

Oh I don't like Shelly... She seems to manly for me and those lips. Loved Brendon last year now he is so whipped and is just crys all the time.
T-minus1 hour and 10mins...

Hi All,

Happy Booking to all of you who are booking tonight! I agree with Kathy (Gma X4) that if Palo seems really booked up tonight when you log on, that there will be spots open when you get on the ship! There are always open spots when you get on the ship.

Ok, so I just have to tell everyone that DH and I have finally come to a decision regarding this Maho Beach thing. After literally going back and forth and back and forth and back AND forth, we have decided we are going to do a cab and NOT go with Bernard's private tour. It just makes SO much more sense money-wise for what we plan to do that day. If we had wanted a private tour of the island and stop at several places, then it'd make sense to pay that money, but for us, we really just want to go to Maho Beach and if we had done Bernard's Tours, we would have had him stop at a different beach. But, the other thing that made us decide against it is included in the price is bottled water, soda, beer and rum punch. Well, DH and the boys drink soda, but not a lot, and I don't drink soda at all. DH nor I are beer drinkers. We do drink and love cocktails and LOVE wine (we are big wine people), I did a TON of research online about Bernards (reading lots of reviews, etc), and I found out the rum punch is served in these little shot glasses (you get as much as you want), but from what I've read, it's super super strong. I would totally drink one or maybe two, and so would DH, but we are not huge hard alcohol people, so we would not get our money's worth for the beverages on this tour, especially since we don't like beer. So, basically, DH and I decided we'd be paying $350 + gratuity for a private taxi to take us to Maho Beach and one other beach, plus a couple sodas, some bottled water, and maybe two or three shot glasses of rum punch. This just does not make sense financially for not wanting to do much more than that on the island. I'd much rather spend that money on something else. I still will say that everything I read about Bernard's is 5 star... all excellent reviews... so I'm not saying they are not good. We just decided that for what we want to do, spending that kind of money doesn't make sense.

SO, our plan is to try to get a cab around 10 AM to Maho Beach (I researched it, and it's about $25 + tip for all 4 of us one way), and then stay at Maho Beach until 4 PM. I know that is a long time for this particular beach, but for us, literally, the main reason we wanted to go to St. Maarten again was for our 11 year old son to see the airplanes take off and land at Maho Beach... he's been dreaming of this for a couple years!! And, there are a couple hotels right there, so if we need a break, we can go into the hotels and get out of the sun.

But, this way, we'll get to see LOTS of planes, and all 4 of us do love planes, so it'll be fun for all of us.

Then, we'll catch a cab back.... if we leave Maho Beach at 4 PM, that will give us PLENTY of time to get back to the ship... I can't imagine it'd take us more than 2 1/2 hours with bad traffic to get back to port!! That'd be crazy. And, I did research and found out you can either ask your taxi driver to pick you up at the time you tell him, or you can go to Sun Set bar right at Maho Beach, and they will call a cab, and if neither of those work, you can walk over to the hotels, and you should be able to get a cab from one of the hotels. So, I'm not too worried now about finding a cab back.

So, for those of you planning on going to Maho Beach, hopefully all this info on both Bernards and a taxi is helpful. If you ARE wanting to go to Maho, but only want to go for an hour, and see a lot of other things on the island, Bernards would totally be the way to go, but I'd do their public tour for $40 per person.

It definitely feels good to have this decision made and now I can just sit and relax and wait for November to come!! :) :)

LovestoRun--I am not a runner either, I tried it for a bit, but just don't enjoy it. My mom's DH is an extreme runner, he does 100 milers. Well, he did them, but was injured and has had a hard time getting back into that kind of shape. Then broke 3 ribs in a fall this summer (not while running) and that has slowed him down some more.

Wow, 100 milers?!! Definitely not me! :rotfl: I actually know someone who does those LONG road races, too... I could not even imagine. I did one full marathon in my life, and I basically just said to myself that I checked that off my bucket list, and I'll never do that distance again. I like shorter distances now. It's just easier time-wise, and I don't get bored with just running for 30 minutes. Anything longer than that, I get bored.

Kathy,
I don't know how you could stand all those years in Alaska. I love the beauty of the state but to me it would be depressing to live there due to the weather.

Kathy

Yah, I agree... I always wonder how I was able to stand Alaska for all those years, too! But, the only thing I can think of is when you are a kid and it is all you know, then it seems normal. :) My parents lived up there for my dad's job, so that is why we lived there. But, after I got out of Alaska and discovered what the "lower 48" was like, I could never go back! I go to visit every couple years, but that is good enough for me. My brother and his whole family still live up there, so that is why I go up... to visit them.

Kathy: Alaska would be beautiful... Darcie is in the same boat with the darkness... It took her a while to get use to that and more daylight in the summer, and not being able to sleep as it was so light out.

Tanya

Yes, Darcie definitely would understand what life was like up in Alaska!!

Well, everyone, have fun booking tonight!!

Kathy

Good night everyone,

I will be sawing logs while your up booking.:cloud9:
Hope everyone gets what they want.

Back in the morning to see who got what,

kathy

Lovestorun:

I think you made the right choice on the tour. That's a lot of money and I'd imagine the cabs are easy to come by. If not, just think of it as another 5K run! (or 10K or 20K or however far away the ship is, haha).

16 minutes to booking, the only thing I'm trying to do tonight is Palos for brunch and dinner, excursions I'll take my chances.

NC2WDW,

You are SO LUCKY to have mom along; I'm sure she'll be great help with the kids. We're still considering doing something similar, but I'm not sure, unless we brought both grandmas someone would be left out.

For some reason I can't book... Trip has been paid for....Hope it works....

It took me a few times, but I got Palo Dinner on day 2 and brunch on day 3. The dinner had a lot of choices, brunch only one. Keep trying, it should go through eventually.

Good night!

NC2WDW,

You are SO LUCKY to have mom along; I'm sure she'll be great help with the kids. We're still considering doing something similar, but I'm not sure, unless we brought both grandmas someone would be left out.

We have figured out that the best way to spend quality time with both my parents and DH's parents (so they can have quality time with our boys/their grandsons) is to go on a Disney Cruise with them. But, my parents and DH's parents really don't know each other well (only because of their locations, so they never are able to get together), and so we have just decided since having kids that it works best to just get together with one set of parents at a time, rather than try to get everyone together, because then it'll be hard for the grandparents to have undivided attention with their grandsons.

That said, starting last year, we figured out going on a Disney Cruise with each set of parents was ideal!! But, we had the same issue you mentioned above... we first invited DH's parents on a cruise, but then we realized my parents would feel left out, so we told my parents that our next cruise, we'd invite them, and suddenly all was totally good! So, we alternate now with the grandparents, and it works great.

This cruise in November, we are just going by ourselves, though. Since it's my 40th birthday, I just wanted to spend it with only my DH and my kids and have quality undivided time with them, plus, I also didn't have to deal with hard feelings in the whole family of inviting my parents or DH's parents to my 40th bday cruise, but not anyone else.... and I didn't want it to turn into a cruise where we have tons of family, so when we get home from our November cruise, the following weekend, I'm having a party at my house and inviting family and friends, and that'll be my 40th celebration with everyone. princess:

So, I'm actually really looking forward to this cruise, because the last 2 cruises we've spent it with my parents or DH's parents, which has been great, but it's nice for just our family to go by ourselves this time.

This is why we are doing the 8-day MR Christmas cruise in December... we are going with DH's parents because we promised them we'd do a cruise with them this year.

Anyway, just wanted to say this since you mentioned if you invited one grandma, the other might feel left out... maybe you can invite one grandma, and tell the other that the next cruise you'll invite the other one. :)

Kathy

Lovestorun--It sounds like you made the right decision for Maho Beach. I'm sure that's a huge weight off you.

I was able to book everything we wanted, yay! Palo brunch day 2, dinner day 6, St. Thomas Screamin Eagle ride, and one spa res on day 3.

Someone on the main boards had mentioned they couldn't do online check in until the actual morning, so I'm going to check it out in the morning. I'm tired! I kept falling asleep!

So now my only problem is that we actually got bumped to first dinner seating and I'm not sure I like that. I think I'm going to ask our TA to get it back to 2nd. I have to talk to DH about it in the morning.

Yay, that is great you got everything you wanted! Oh, I so want to do the Screamin Eagle ride, but nobody else in my family wants to do it, and I don't really want to go off on my own and separate from DH and the kids, so I am not doing it. It looks like SO much fun, though!!

Is day 6 Thursday? (Not sure if the day we leave is considered day 1 for Palo, or if Sunday is considered day 1). Anyway, if Day 6 is Thursday (a sea day), that is the day we are going to Palo for dinner. :)

How did you get bumped to 1st seating?? Had you been on a waitlist to be bumped to 1st seating, or did they bump you without you requesting it? Hopefully you can get it figured out!

Well, sleep well!!

It sounds like the others who booked tonight were able to book things... everyone has to report tomorrow what they booked! It's fun to hear what everyone is doing.

For us, we booked the beach break at St. Thomas. Our kids LOOOOOOVE beaches (we don't have nice beaches here in Seattle at all, and certainly don't have water warm enough to swim in!), so going to a beach is what appealed to everyone the most.

As for the spa, if I go, I'm going to wait and book when I'm on the ship and see what specials they run... and also, if you like massage, they have off and on those massage chairs outside on the deck by the adult only area where you sit in it with your face rested in the face rest thing, and they do head, neck and back massages there, but they are cheap... like $25. They put those out on the deck when the massage therapists don't have anyone booked... so that is a cheap way to get a massage. :)

BUT, if anyone wants a recommendation of an awesome massage, if you want to splurge, my absolutely FAVORITE massage at the spa is the Bamboo Massage.... oh my goodness, it is amazing, and you feel SO great for a couple days afterwards. It's expensive (I think like $150), but totally worth it if anyone wants to go to the spa and splurge on a massage. When I went on our last cruise and had an injured back, I went to the spa twice (I had to cancel all my shore excursions because of my injury, so I booked the spa for myself as a replacement for my excursions :) ), but I got the Bamboo Massage twice on our last cruise, and I was able to move so much better after the massage, and my pain level went down. But, it just allowed me to relax soooo well! :)

Sleep well everyone!
Kathy

Yup you can do check in online now... Just need my passport which I have at work... So I will do it when I get there.
Happy Monday!

Happy Monday!

Kathy, our Palo dinner is Thurs, at 6:30 I believe. We were waitlisted for the 1st dinner so I guess we got it. I never thought of requesting to be removed from the waitlist....I'm going to call about it this morning. We really like the idea of Bella being able to eat then get picked up for the kids club and they only do that for the 2nd seating so we are going to try to get moved back. Thanks for the tip on the message chairs, I think we'll definately look for those!

Flygrl, my passports are at home! I'll have to check it out this evening.

I'm a total newbie here and on DCL. We too are from NJ, and have an 8 yo boy & 6 yo girl. We are cruising with our good friends who have a 7 yo girl. I would like to do something special for the kids and the fish extenders sound awesome! :cheer2::cheer2: How do I sign up?
Thanks in advance, and sorry if I ask any dumb questions
