What am I missing? Free Dining seems pretty decent for larger families but there are only 2 of us and running the math an AP discount of 20-25% is just as good even at a value resort (where it is the best value).

I suppose if you eat a dessert and a soda at every meal it makes sense, but who does that? It also makes sense if the room only discounts aren't great, but is that really going to be the case if they are offering free dining?

It really depends on how many and here you stay if the room discounts are better verse free dining...as for pop and dessert...I drink pop at every meal on vacation. I don't do coffee. And on vacation dessert is the best part...so heck yeah I eat it.

:) That's the thing, we'd eat the soda/dessert if it was included, but that isn't really saving us money since we'd get a soda at like 25% of meals otherwise and just drink ice water the rest and I'm rarely if ever getting dessert with a counter-service meal.

I understand different strokes for different folks, etc, but there seems to be almost universal praise for FD being the holy grail of discounts.

I think we are just a unique case where there is only two of us, we don't each much dessert or drink much soda, are visiting twice in the same year so we have APs, and will be purchasing TiW and eating table service for about half our dinners.

Seems like you can make FD be worth a lot more than it is for us by trying to get every cent worth, but then I feel like FD is taking over my vacation :)

Hoping for a decent 20-30% AP discount!

We like a room only discount better, too. When we have the freedom to eat the way we want to, we tend eat to much less than we do on the dining plan! But I still work the numbers every year, because there are so many variables.

Free dining certainly isn't the best discount for everyone. For us, it saves us $205 or so a night. A room discount wouldn't come close to that. Since our kids are both over 10, we are 4 adults, so it works for us. We also don't try to 'maximize' it. We just eat what we want. And desserts often make a great breakfast the next morning :thumbsup2

Happy to say we just pulled the trigger on 11/29-12/6 in a Little Mermaid Room. No discount yet but fingers, toes, legs, arms, etc all crossed hoping for free dining. Then maybe we can make our trip a little longer!!. Now to go design a new ticker.

BTW I get to make ADRs in 2 days!!

I understand being just the 2 of you where a % discount would be the better deal, but we recently had the 20% room only discount and only saved a little over $300. When we received the FD pin (as a family of 5) that was a huge savings of $1500+. FD for us just gives us the option of eating where and what we prefer to eat rather than what is a value. We could all choose to drink water and not have 1 dessert and still save hundreds of dollars more than we would have with the % off discount. :thumbsup2 I hope you get the discount you are looking for :)

Coffee by my side, anxiously waiting for 6am to get here. I sure hope online works for me this morning.

Anyone else waiting too?

Good Morning everyone!!!!!!! Hope all have a good day! Thank you for everyones help with my dining... it was making me nervous. I needed to sort it out now vs later with a large group the ressies might not be there in a month or 2.

Good morning! :-)

Now that all ressies are made I have started looking at all of the goodies I can make or buy at home to take that will make the trip even more magical. What are the must have ones? I have DD (and me :-) lol) an autograph book. What else are must have’s?!

Thanks to everyone that keeps posting in this thread, it has been a huge help for me planning my family’s first visit to Disney Nov 8th-17th.

So far I have ASM booked as we are a family of 5(DD 13,DS 10,DD 7) and each child having their own “bed” will save me a huge amount of work (sibling rivalry). I have most of my ADR’s (18) done including an illusive 8:05@ crt on the 10th. We also have MVMCP, BB, Fantasmic and Dolphins in depth booked.

Currently I am working on minor adjustments and tour plans. A couple of questions have popped up and I am look for everyone’s opinion.

As I said we are staying at All Star Music family suite so each child has their own bed. It was the only affordable option I saw at the time. A few people here have mention getting 2 rooms. I am curious about the pro’s and con’s of this and cost differences.

Something else is the dessert party. My wife is a big sweets fan, especially chocolate I was thinking it would be something to look at.. but with a family of 5 it will be over $100 for dessert. Not sure it’s worth it.

Thanks for everyone’s input, and send some pixie dust my way still waiting on a FD pin (although the CM I was talking to said typically they go out to returning people not first timers).

As a wife who also has a sweet tooth I would appreciate the fact that my DH had planned the Dessert party for me, but if I found out how much it cost I'd beat him to death with one of the desserts from said Dessert party... :coffee:

This is exactly how I feel about the FD.:goodvibes Its just hubby and I going. We are staying at the WL. FD is saving us $721.00. We do not drink soda at every meal and we do not always eat the dessert. But just having a nice meal is what matters to us. Its also a nice break in the day. This trip we have upgraded to the DDP. And we are still eating two meals a day. Its just allowing us to do what we really want to do. :thumbsup2
