For those of you with young kids who take breaks during the day.... what do you do for your break? And how late to you stay out at night? I know everyone is different, but I'm just curious.

Last time we went to WDW, DS was 2 (almost 3) and DD was 5. We took a break every day, except one. The day we didn't take a break, DS fell asleep during dinner. When we did take a break, it would take 3 to 4 hours out of our day. By the time we left the park, got back to the resort, got the kids down for nap, let them sleep for 2 hours, woke them up, and got back to the park, 3 to 4 hours had passed.

This year when we go DS will be 4 (almost 5) and DD will be 7. They both stopped taking naps this past year so I'm not sure I could even get them down for a nap, and if I did, it would take forever. I don't want to lose that much time from the parks this year, but I definitely don't want to deal with tired, cranky children. We won't have a stroller like we did last time.

Any suggestions?

Since our first trip in 2002 we never left the parks for breaks, guess I was lucky mine always just fell asleep in the strollers, I've always thought it would just take too much time to do like you said. My son will be 5 this next trip so no stroller, I'm just planning on winging it, but he doesn't take naps now anyways, so I'm sure we'll just plan to find somewhere quiet to just sit and relax....

For those asking about the Be Our Guest restaurant, this is from the Fantasyland expansion thread:

When will reservations be available for Be Our Guest?

Unfortunately, there is no set answer for this. But we can look at history for WDW's 2 newest restaurants:

Via Napoli: started taking reservations on Aug 6th for Sept 10th opening, soft opening on August 5th.
La Hacienda: started taking reservations on Sept 16th for Oct. 15th opening, soft opening on September 15th.

Both restaurants opened with the Disney Dining Plan.

Thanks for the info!! :thumbsup2

ya'll have inspired me - I should be working but no I'm attempting a park/food/firework plan.:woohoo:

Hahahaha (in my wicked laugh) we lured in another one! :rotfl: :rotfl2: :lmao:

Your schedule looks great! You seem to have everything worked out.

You're spreadsheet looks almost identical to mine! Great minds think alike! ;)
Thank you- yes, definitely great minds! :cool1::thumbsup2

So we've been 3x at WDW since having my son. We took him in Dec 2009 at 2yo, Dec 2010 at 3yo and then most recently in Oct 2011 at 4yo. We still take the midday breaks and plan to take them in November, not only for him, but my DH likes the downtime too. We will have my parents along and both are not in great health and tire easily, so the break will be needed for them too.

Typically we hit the parks at opening and do whatever morning EMHs we can, so we are often out the door to a park (for a 9am opening) by 8am. So we are up by 7am most mornings. We typically will tour a park until about 2pm. We usually leave by 2 at the latest, just depends on plans. WE have stayed at BLT the last two trips, so it was easy to get back to in most cases. We did WL before that. We do rent a car, so that means we aren't waiting on buses, which is great in the mornings. Because we arrive at opening, we always get a front parking spot and it makes it easier getting out. We walk to MK from BLT, so that is easy. So we only spend 15 minutes max on transportation and usually much less (each way). We usually get to the room and try and get DS to nap for at least an hour. He does still nap at his school currently from 12-2 each day.

He will be 5 this trip, so while we may not nap, we will at least make him rest. Just a break from all the energy of the parks can help, even if not a full on nap. Usually I don't nap, but DH will set on the balcony and read while DS naps. I watch tv, take trip notes, or even go shop at the BLT shops or ride the monorail loop and shop. :lmao: We try not to break for longer than 2 hours. So including transportation, we are looking at 2.5 hours total. So if we broke at 2pm, we try and be ready to leave again by 4pm.

I do a daily itinerary and we laminate them on notecards and attach to a keychain. Everyone in our party gets one. While I don't list out which ride we do when, we do list out times for when we need to leave the hotel- for example- leave BLT at 8:30am for MK at 9am. Then break at 2pm. Head to Epcot by 4pm. That sort of helps us all know our goal for the break- everyone knows we plan to walk out the door by 4pm. Of course that is flexible, but it helps when everyone knows and can be freshened up, awake and ready after the break.

We usually head back to another park anywhere between 4pm-5pm. Of course in the fall, you have the earlier closing hours for the off season, so staying late isn't too bad. For Epcot, they close at 9pm. AK closes at 5pm typically in Nov (not counting holiday week here), MK can close anywhere from 7pm on party nights to 10pm on weekends. DHS is usually 8pm or so. So it isn't like he is up super late. However, he does like staying up late and we haven't had a problem with him staying up until 11pm for MVMCP and MNSSHP. We typically avoid evening EMH, i just know he won't make it til midnight etc. and it is always so crowded. We can tell he is tiring out a lot by 11pm, so we only keep him out that late for the party.

Otherwise, we are usually back in room by 10pm and asleep by 11. He seems to do okay. I think the midday break helps. We do at least one sit down meal a day too, so that is sort of relaxing as well.

Even before we had our son, when we traveled with my family to WDW, we always took the midday break- we all just felt better and then could stay out late. Sort of the best of both worlds- doing rope drop and being able to stay late enough for the fireworks etc.

The most it takes away from our park time is like 3 hours. But we find because we do rope drop, use fastpass and stay late, we tend to still do all that we want to. If we were staying off site, i might reconsider taking a break, but it works well for us. Especially with the quick walk to MK from BLT. :goodvibes

woo hoo- can't wait to see it!!!!!

Thanks so much for all of the great information. I'm definitely going to look into the swan or dolphin. We are driving so ME won't be an issue. I would prefer to be able to charge to the room, but that certainly isn't a deal breaker.

I do think you're right about the marketing department being separate. I hear of lots of people who already have a reservation being able to apply a pin. Of course, lots of times this does mean having to change resorts.

That is one amazing schedule!!! I'm not even close to detailed planning yet. I would feel alot better if I could just make a reservation.

Thank goodness I'm planning a longer trip. Now that I've got a rough sketch layed out I can't imagine doing in less than 10 days without yearly trips. :lmao:

I've broken my days down to:
Breakfast (many character breakfasts) pirate:
Park
Lunch :3dglasses
Nap :hippie:
Park
Dinner
Fireworks/Parade :yay:

I've got a nap figured into every day but one. My little guy is 4 and still naps a good two hours on most days and is quite happy to stay up late and sleep late. We'll see how this goes. :rotfl: Even though we will miss valuable park time in the afternoons for my sanity he needs some downtime.

I think I need to look into the cost of a delux meal plan or cut out some of those character breakfasts.

Wow! I fel like im behind the ball now lol. I was getting ready to go look at TP to see if park hours are up or estimate up lol. Im having someone come and give us an estimate on windows tonight. Fun Fun! We will see how this goes

LaDonna & EXWDWCM - Thanks for your thoughts.

DS has nap time every day at day care, but he doesn't usually sleep much, but Disney is a whole different kind of tired.

We are early risers... 6am so we can be out the door by 7:30 and to the park for 8am breakfast ADRs.

I think I'm going to plan for daily breaks. I definitely want to avoid a meltdown. When DD gets tired, she just gets quiet, but when DS gets quiet, well, let's just say Oscar the Grouch has NOTHING on him. If I find we don't need the breaks, great; but I think I need to be prepared for them... even if we just go back to the room and watch TV and rest.

When I priced out our meals, we came out better with the deluxe, but we have some other expensive meals also. ;)

TP has their estimated hours up. I don't think official hours are set to be released until May. :goodvibes

Ok I am not able to concentrate all day and something is bugging me. I am trying to find out for 2012 which week would be considered a holiday week for Vetran's Day. I know that usually there is not free dining during a week with a holiday. We are planning on Nov. 2 (Fri) to Nov 10 (Sat). It looks like Vetrans Day falls on a Sun so it woul be observed on Monday the 12th. Can someone help me figure out what week WDW would consider the holiday?

My kids are lousy nappers - I don't think they have actually ever taken a nap at Disney during one of our breaks, but we always try to spend some quiet time in the afternoon - either in the room or at the pool or something. I think you have a good plan!

I'm definitely bringing a stroller, though. My youngest is four, and probably won't ride in it much, but I usually have it so loaded up with stuff I can't imagine going without it!

FD was offered last year on Veteran's day so I wouldn't count that out yet. If FD is offered on the day you check in, then you can have it the entire time. If you can be flexiblie at all, that's your best bet. We may change our dates by a day or two depending on if and when FD is offered.

LOL! You sound like my DH. We had a double (side by side) jogging stroller (not that it was EVER used for jogging :rotfl2:). DD sat in it more then DS. We sold our stroller after we got back from Disney. DH wants to rent a stroller when we go to Disney just so he will have a place to put all his camera equipment. It has to weigh at least 50 pounds. I think he needs to decide on one camera, and be done with it. :rolleyes1 I stashed a tote bag in the stroller, but it had diapers, wipes, etc. I'm thinking (and hoping) that I can fit everything I want to bring into a hipster. Oh! and the stroller rental is NOT in my budget so I will NOT be paying for it! :rotfl2::rotfl2: I will admit that it was nice to be able to throw some blankets in the stroller and use them to bundle up during the fireworks and parades. :rolleyes1

My kids are off on Monday, November 12th in observance of Veteran's Day. I have no idea how that will affect discounts. I would expect crowds to be high that weekend.

Just checking in! Hope everyone is well. Been super busy with work, cannot wait till November!

Also, I should say that I've been following along.

Well, let me be more specific. When the thread first started, I jumped on board and added my November dates and forgot all about this thread! :confused3 My bad.

So by the time I remember I made a post, ya'll were on page 141. That like 3904258239890 posts. :lmao:

So by following along, what I really mean is, I spent about a week straight, reading ever.single.post on all 141 pages.

:surfweb:

Hi. I'm ready to jump in the middle of this conversation now.

Does anyone recall what dates in November 2011 Free Dining was offered?

Does the free dining week normally start on a Saturday????

Got a 30% off code for 11/9-11/16, but I have 11 people!!! :grouphug:

Free dining would be a better deal!:thumbsup2
