Well, here goes nothin’..

I’m taking my family to Universal/IOA.

It’s not quite against their will, but let it suffice to say that I’m the most excited person about this trip. Well, that may not be totally true since my daughter is 9 (DD) and has that whole borderline hysterical drama thing going on. To the horror of my 12-year old son (DS). Who would like to sell his sister to the gypsies on most days…

And then there’s my husband, who I guess I’ll call DH. He’s a 45-year old “employee with a strong work ethic”. Which is a polite way to say “workaholic”. So, he needs a vacation. So, I say. And, apparently, in this anyway, I’m in charge. Or so I like to think.

I’m going to do my best at this trippie thing. But, I’ll say upfront that I’m a crazy busy chick right now. As we all are, I know.

So, the trip is from November 2nd to November 9th. I’m booked into the RPR at Club level. And I made this ressie in August 2008. Which just goes to show you what a freak I am. I gotta say that I actually had the reservation lady laugh at me for booking 15 mos in advance. But, in reviewing the boards, I see that my freakiness is not an uncommon thing…. :thumbsup2

So, in August 2008, I drag my work colleague into my little world of Universal obsession. I convinced her to take her 2009 vacation at US/IOA as well. She took her family in July and stayed Club at the HRH. She loved it. As well she might as we discussed little else for months……

We had a great time, purchasing and sharing every single book we could find on Universal. Some good, some not so much. I’m a big time lurker and occasional poster on the Disboards, so I gathered a ton of very cool info for her (and eventually for me). In fact, thanks to the boards, she and her family got the very cool Queen Deluxe upgrade at the HRH.. Gotta say that I’m bummed that the same upgrade isn’t available at the RPR. :headache:

OK, so I made my hotel ressie. Paid my one night’s deposit on the credit card at RACK RATES, argh… Started my obsessive checking for discounted rates… I think they know my voice at RPR….

And, then on to the park tix. At the time I was booking, it was just about the time that the 7-day unlimited pass price was increasing from $82. The boards were buzzing with people who had spotted a AAA location with some tickets left at $82. People were driving across state lines for these suckers!

So, I call our local AAA and they have the $82 tix! I dragged my colleague out of the door for an early lunch and we snatched up most of what the AAA had left. Score!! :cool1:

Having fulfilled my Universal obsession for the moment, we returned to work….

More later guys… yawning… :cloud9:
Let me know if someone is reading this thing….
Best, E

Soooo, when I left off, I was reading up on Universal and buying tickets.

There was no way I was going to plan a road trip to Florida. More than 12 hrs in the car = bad thing in our family... :rotfl:

So, airfare. Well, this is how I did it.

Every so often we get an Am Ex offer in the mail for a Gold card. If you take the card, they give you 50K points. I see 50K points and think "two round-trip tix to Florida". The only catch to the card is the $150 annual fee. But more on that later.

So, now I need 50K more since there are 4 of us..

Years ago I hooked my "bonus card" from ShopRite to Continental OnePass. They will give you miles for the groceries you buy. I don't keep track of it, but every once in a while I take a look and it's surprising how many miles you can rack up for just buying groceries. Dang we eat a lot!! :rotfl2:

So, I find I have 7K miles.

OK, now I need 43K more.

So, a little while passes and the Amex Card offers a promo for some sort of extended pay offer. If you sign up, you get 20K more points. Signed!

So, then I've been looking at the Continental OnePass credit card. When you sign on, you get 25K. This one has an $85 annual fee, but they are offering a $50 rebate for signing.

So, I end up with 3K extra points. But, I have the Gold card annual fee after one year, so I cancel the card just before it renews. Bye Gold card..
And I keep the Cont'l OnePass card, at a cost of $35.00.

So, 103K points for $35.00. Not too shabby.

But.... will we need to fly in the dead of night from JFK Airport with a connection in Nigeria?

I'll let you know later....
;) E

:rolleyes1 Soooo, um, anyone out there?

Anywhoo, my miles weren't going to be of any use without a decent flight. Last spring when the airlines started showing available flights in Nov, I started searching.

My ideal flight would have been out of Newark Airport, no connection, mid-morning departure. I was flexible on the dates a bit, since I knew I could change my hotel ressie since I still had plenty of time.

So, I checked and searched and checked again. This was just about the time that the airlines were hurting for business. Apparently, the way that they helped their bottom line was by cutting back on flights.

Out of Newark, pretty much on any day that I'd be able to fly, there was NO flight that didn't use 50K points PER TICKET. And that was WITH a connection (not Nigeria, but Cincinnati which is just about as far away-JK!).

I have a real problem flying west when I want to fly south. :rotfl:

So, I pondered and pondered before thinking DUH, why don't I try the NY airports? Mainly 'cause I hate the NY airports. Too far, expensive to park, traffic, you get the picture.

To make a long story short, I found a flight out of JFK that would allow me to use the normal 25K pts per ticket, no connection, but it leaves mid-afternoon on 11/2. Kind of stinks since we won't arrive in Florida before evening.

But, hey, beggars can't be choosers...

So, now I need to get us to JFK...

P.S. Here's a pic of me. It's my very first photobucket post, so be kind....

Just wanted to say I am here and glad you don't have to fly west to go south!! So do tell. Do we have a nice neighbor/friend/relative/stranger that will be driving you to JFK?

Here and waiting!

Nigeria? Are you sure you didn't read Niagra wrong? lol :goodvibes:

Whoo hoo, 1st poster!

Hee hee! I tell you, I was seriously worried about those connections... But Niagra would have also been a fun trip!

Yay! Thanks for reading!

I'm so glad people are writing in! I never realized till I started this thing how happy you can be for replies!

More travel saga later....

I'm in! I have a real soft spot for Universal Orlando but try to keep that quiet 'round these parts.

Me? I'm a compulsive spur of the moment vacation planner which throws the rest of the family for a loop. But how much fun is it to announce we're heading to Orlando in two weeks?!? Sqeals of delight. Heck, if it's easy, it's just not as much fun!

Spur of the moment sounds really good to me! Wish I could do it, but I'm a long term planner girl myself. But, I'll tell you, there are moments when I wish I could just drive to the airport (not JFK..) and get on a plane to somewhere relaxing.....

I listened to all the DISboard experts talk about their favorite Universal resorts and took a look at the Universal website before settling on the Royal Pacific.

The Hard Rock sounds like a lot of fun and Portofino Bay sounds elegant and upscale, but the idea of a relaxing tropical theme was just irresistable.

I think we'll take a trip to the infamous Hard Rock pool and a tour of Portofino Bay but I'm also hoping to get in some pool-side relaxing at the RPR.

I really hope that it is warm enough for the pool in early Nov.

We did Disney during the same week in 2007 and the weather was gorgeous, mid-70's in the day with mid 60's at night. Blue sky, no humidity, no rain. Really lovely. But, not really HOT enough to spend a lot of time in the pool.... (I know, I know, what a whiner :lmao: )

We are also booked into a Club room (at least for now). I've been absorbing all the talk of the club offerings and the pros and cons. It's an indulgence, but I'd really love to be able to swing it.

Which brings us to the first major road-block to this vacation. In July I learned that I was losing my job. My company just closed and I'm unemployed at the moment. :scared1:

At the time I got the news about my job, I posted on the "Something about Nothing" thread which is filled with very cool peeps chatting about just about everything. I highly recommend anyone stopping by to say "hi".

Anyway, I posted my bad news and that I was considering canceling the vacation since being unemployed doesn't really lend itself to a Universal resort vaca in a Club room. The cool peeps there helped me see that it would be really sad to cancel (hi Mac!) and thanks for that.

So, the vaca is still a go, although I have been on the fence about the extra cost of Club. Being trying to figure if we'll get enough out of this perk to make up for the cost.

I'll let you all know how the calculation comes out.... :goodvibes

Great job so far!I can't wait to hear how the trip went, we have a club level room booked at RPR for August '10:thumbsup2

Hi Carole!! I've just finished reading your report... I have to post there too! I LOVE IT! Your husband has the best smile!!

More later!! E :cloud9:

We leave in TWO WEEKS!!!! I’m both YAAAAYYY!!! And AACCCCCKK!! At the same time.

‘Cause I like to have everything organized before I leave on vacation. And there’s no way it’s happening this time… So, I have to deal with it. Or drink a lot… or both :drinking1

We are going to stay with the Club room at RPR. It’s more $$ but not as much as I’d feared. And what the heck, you only live once right??? And here in this house, we figure, if we’re going to rack up debt, let’s make it worth it…. No piddly debt for us… :lmao:

And we’re still flying into and out of JFK, on a Delta flight using Continental One Pass Miles.

And since I booked the flight in March, I keep getting these little update e-mails. With flight time changes.

Which are useful, since, I think I should know what time the flight takes off. But, which are driving me over the brink since the flight times keep getting later and later and later.

So now, on Monday 11/2, we fly out of JFK at 5:30 instead of 2:30 which means we don’t arrive in Orlando till 7:30…. Aaaaaaccccck. :scared1:

And, even better…. We fly out of Orlando on Monday 11/9 at 8:30 pm instead of 5:30. Which means that we get into JFK at…. Wait for it…… 11:00 pm!!!! And we have an almost 2 hr drive after that. And work/school the next day… AAAAACCCCCKKKK!!! :scared1: :scared1:

So now, unpacked and unorganized, I leave you for tonight….. :cloud9:

LOOKING FORWARD TO VACATION!!!!! WOOOO HOOOO!

Best, E
