November 12, 2005 RETURNS

Another note - MOON publishes Hawaii Island Guides - there is an All-Island Guide and Guides for some of the islands seperately.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS GUIDEBOOK...

It provides great summaries of the history and culture of the island and out of the way spots to visit, even some hawaiian words and common phrases.

A must have book...(at least in my opinion....)

And since we are giving tips - Mabye you can help with our upcoming cruise - we are taking the Magic to the Panama Canal - We will have many sea days.

Barkley - yes, I did listen and have a hot stone massage on the list.....But what else must we do? I want to watch a movie under the stars, and in the LBV theatre. I am not yet tired of the shows and formal night so that will be fun.

But fess, up , what are the secrets that we need to know --- Panama Canal Day I am planning on reading - we have the book The Path to the Sea - and will try not to fight over it.

So, hints please - We did book brunch - but High Tea was all booked up.

you might find that with more sea days they will have more activities schedualed than on the other cruises. when we did the 7 day that had to get re-routed and cancel stops because of a hurricane there were more schedualed things than on the regular 7 day. dh and i went to a couple of the cooking presentations-those were pretty interesting, they had several spa presentations as well. one thing i'de probably take along is my laptop or portable dvd player and kick back and watch stuff i'de been planning on but had'nt gotten around to (did this when we spent a couple of days on amtrack last year-got one of those full season releases of a tv show at the rental place back home).

i can't remember the name of the place, but back by the area where the ship sold their liquor and cigars was an adults only bar that had a very relaxed atmosphere. we went there several evenings and realy enjoyed listening to the music-it was generaly some low key jazz.

if you enjoyed the hot stone massage and have'nt tried the heated tile lounging chairs in the spa-they are awsome. dh and i both end up popping for one of those duration of the cruise unlimitted use passes for the use of the spa stuff (if for no other reason-i think the showers in there are so much better than the ones in the staterooms, much roomier and better water pressure. on the formal nights one of us used the room shower and the other used the spa shower making for getting ready much easier).

I'm so glad I mentioned that we are going to Kauai! Thank you for all the tips! Waimea Canyon and hiking will for sure be on our list. Just hoping DDs5/7 can keep up with us. Even if we get on the trail and move a mile or two, I'll be happy. That's why we picked this island. I wanted to get out and see the beauty:goodvibes

Check on the Lilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge:thumbsup2

Check on the Kauai brewing company:drinking1:thumbsup2

Can't wait for the coffee, I'll need it after all the fuzzy naval drinks:sick:

give a call to one of the concierge desks at one of the hotels in the area you're staying-even if you're not staying at a hotel you can access great information and maybe even find out about some activities at the area hotels that are available to non guests (when we stayed in maui the hyatt had an anstronomer who did star gazing sessions on the hotel roof with these massive telescopes-non guests of the hotel could reserve spots for only a couple of bucks more than the guests paid). we also got some good info. on scuba for dh by directly contacting some of the area padi certified shops and by dh hitting some internet scuba boards for the area-he found out which dives were the best, which to avoid-and which of the charter companies were preferred by the locals who use them most often:thumbsup2

I ordered the Kauai one and it's on it's way!

Thank you :flower3:

We just won't go away:laughing:

Yeah, get those names out! If there is any stalking to be done, it should be done by me!! (and I already have the list... someplace)

We need a slight mod to the list as well. FairyDisMom has past. Okay, she just picked up an alias and her hubby has an ID as well. So, it's LeRue (Formerly known as FairyDisMom) & GoofyDrivesACar.

Did you PM all of those folks with a link to this thread? Where are they? :confused3

We should get everybody together, have a little mutiny on the Magic, and sail her to Hawaii!!! pirate: Don't get me started on the Passenger Vessels Services Act!

I love how our thread is shaping up with the first page full of memories.

I guess the die-hards here need to find some of our ship mates and see if we can pm them with the link to where we now hang out..

The Passenger Vessel Services Act of 1886 (sometimes abbreviated to PVSA, Passenger Services Act, or PSA) is a piece of United States legislation which came into force in 1886 relating to cabotage. Essentially, it says:

No foreign vessels shall transport passengers between ports or places in the United States, either directly or by way of a foreign port, under a penalty of $300 for each passenger so transported and landed.
Any vessel subject to the Jones Act counts as a US vessel. Under the Passenger Vessel Services Act of 1886, 46 App. U.S.C. § 289, foreign-flagged vessels cannot transport passengers directly between U.S. ports. The handful of U.S.-flagged cruise ships in operation are registered in the U.S. to permit cruises between the Hawaiian Islands, or from the continental U.S. to Hawaii. The Passenger Services Act, however, does not prohibit foreign-flagged ships departing from and returning to the same U.S. port. Nor does it prohibit foreign-flagged ships departing from a U.S. port, visiting a foreign port, and then continuing to a second U.S. port. However, in order to embark in a US port and disembark in a second US port, the vessel must visit a port outside of the USA. Nor does it prevent a ship from taking on passengers at a U.S. port and then returning them to another U.S. city by ground or air, or vice-versa.

Ok - so what is so strang about this?????
I must use cabotage at least three times a day in a sentence:lmao: So what it it? rotten cabbage:rotfl:

I don't know if this link will work... But, the short story is NCLA was whining about other cruiselines violating the PVSA by making ghost stops in ensenada on their way to Hawaii. They claim that is unfair competition. So, the proposed new rule would require longer stays in the foreign port (48 hours AND more than 50% of the total time spent in US ports). This will be a problem for a lot of cruises other than the hawaii cruises. IF they put it into effect as proposed, New England & Alaska cruises, and possibly others will be messed up. If this is put into service before we cruise, we might be in for some sort of major last minute change, or cancellation, to our cruise. So, I'm paying attention anyways... And not real happy about the source of changes...

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=687517

If the link doesn't work, you can probably google "PVSA Update This is NOT Good" and find the link.

The changes won't make any difference to anything Disney is currently doing...

You all are all too funny and sick in the head!:thumbsup2 Leave it to the old crew to keep up the spirits and ventures about!
We, too, are looking forward to going to other Hawiian islands someday.......although we love the Big island, we are tired of it and need to explore some more. Did I mention that my brother lives on Maui and works for Marriott?............one of the "higher" ups in the co.!
I need to take advantage of that fact!
Maybe next Spring Break!?

Our sailing partners in crime the last two DCL's just informs me tonight that he doesn't think he can wait until 20011 and 2012 until the new ships are built!................he thinks we should go again sooner! AWE.... TWIST MY ARM! I would love to sail again with DCL and the trip itself now is a no-brainer! I do wish there would be something different about it though.............maybe there will be by 2009/2010?

Less than 10 days and counting until DIS NURSE and family are on the beaches of Playa del Carmen!:woohoo: So excited to get out of this wintery weather and go to Mexico!!!!!

Oh.....to answer someone's question about what we did on St. John........that is a story in of itself! One which DCl was so apologetic and actually REFUNDED OUR $$$$$ for that excursion!...............it was a DCL excursion from St. Thomas to St. John (supposedly) and this weird stand-in boat crew took us out on a catamaran and sailed AROUND St. John but never actually brought us there! It was one weird excuse and story after another and the whole thing didn't add up (excuses about wind, weather, etc. when it was a beautiful, sunny and calm day out onthe seas!). Other providers brought their patrons to St. John to snorkel, etc. also booked through DCL that day and we investigated the whole thing.....bringing compaints after that fact to the shore excursions desk and bringing it to their attention. They we agast:scared1: at the co. that did this to us and gave us our $$$$ back! DCL was embarrased to say the least and will never use them again, so they say!

I have always wanted to go to St. John and STILL have never quite made it there! ..........although we tried hard!

So, anyone up for DCL Thanksgiving 2009? I am trying to find out dates and quotes but not sure they are out yet?
We are thinking about it........

See ya, DIS NURSE;)

Hey :scared1: one, your AZ 'gang' is taking over our ship pirate:

I can't believe how many are from AZ;)

Did you send them to stalked us? :scared1:

Funny, I don't know any of them! But, now, I might come stalk your cruise meet thread!

Happy Easter EVeryone/.

We had a beautiful Easter time.

Friday was somber services before heading to the grocery store for the makings of Easter dinner. And while I had all good intentions of posting on Saturday, the flurry of house cleaning, followed by rain, took all my time. I finally completed part of the new curtains and pillows for the porch so I could put away the sewing machine....Admittedly while the house was presentable, the spare room is full of the leftovers I did not get to pick up and put away.

The orchids were cooperating, we had 7 gorgeous bloomers. Our friends came over to color eggs and then for dinner. The fire was not to be, due to the rain.

Easter Morning we were up early and over to the island for church and breakfast. Saw our friends briefly as we dogge raindrops out of the church. Picked up Mother and it was still raining. Hot cross buns and a cup of tea were welcome when we made it home, to warm her up. She gave us the cutest gift (not a bsket) - egg cups with llitle chicks inside and egg plates so that we can have our boiled eggs and soldiers. How cute.

And more rain.....Sam grilled the best steelhead trout for dinner with baby carrots, asparagras, home made bread and pasta....yummy. All too son it was over.

I hope you all had a beautiful day as well.

Oh, forgot to mention, used Sam's EAster Basket as the time to tell Mother were were heading to the PC - a friendhip flag pin for hislanyard was a give away....

See YA!!!!
