November '08 ~ What Do You Mean It's Over? Should we plan another???

We just got back from Florida. We had a very interresting trip!!! Let's just say we are glad to be home, and looking forward to a great trip in November.

Well... I probably will do a trip report, but I'll tell my November friends a short version.

First of all.... I didn't realize that August was Hurricane Season. We were in FL for 3 weeks, and it rained just about every day. For the first two weeks we were staying at a friend's beach house on the coast near Melbourne. We had one sunny day the day after we arrived, and it just went downhill from there.

Not to mention the fact that when we were at Disney's Vero Beach the eye of Hurricane Fay was right over us. I have pictures that I am getting developed, so I will post those when I get them back. Let's just say it was pretty bad. I really didn't know what to do with the kids. They were getting so stir crazy.

I will say that they tried to have some indoor activities for the kids one day. They had a treasure hunt in the lobby for the little kids, they had fingerpainting, BINGO, Disney trivia game, and a guy played his banjo. There was a point during that day that they wouldn't let anybody leave the main lobby building because the wind was so strong it could knock you over.

So after that day we still needed something to do. I bought a game from the gift shop and a puzzle, and we played in the room the next day. The power went out for a little bit, but ours came back on. Some people were without power for over a day.

On day three it was still storming really bad, but they did open the pool up in the pouring rain. There were only about 10 people in the pool. It was not fun, and my twins were crying because the rain hurt your skin, and you couldn't see because it was raining so hard and very windy. So that didn't last long either.

We decided to go down to the beach because the kids wanted some shells and that was worse because then the wind was blowing the sand and rain in your face. We went back to the room and changed and went to the main building to eat dinner. We had umbrellas, but it didn't do any good because the wind just blew them inside out. So there was just no way to stay dry.

The fourth day was a little better. It still was rainy, but not as windy so we did go swimming again for a few hours. They finally opened up the slide, and my kids loved that. So even though it was still rainy and pretty cold it was okay.

So the next day we had to check out. I had packed up pretty much everything the night before. We loaded up the car, and went to check out.

Now.... Let me tell you all something that is the worst part of the trip. Yes, the weather was terrible!!! But on our first day all we did was check in. It was pretty late. It was around 8:00 p.m. We unloaded all our luggage and food and beach stuff etc... We got settled in the room and then we went to the main building to eat dinner. We just made it to dinner because they closed at 10:00 p.m.

When we got to the room I got the kids ready for bed. As I was putting them in bed... guess what was on one of the beds. BUGS!!!!! Yes, as I pulled back the covers of the bed there were quite a few bugs. Now, I am ashamed to admit this, but I really didn't think they were BED BUGS. I have read threads on here about bed bugs, and people always make it sound like these bugs are really tiny like lice. I have read some descriptions of them being like the size of a pin head. So I didn't know. I thought maybe they were sand tics or something... just not bed bugs.

I caught the bugs and flushed them. I did NOT let the kids sleep in this bed. I even did this every day. If I saw the bugs I got them with tissue and flushed them. I then decided to save some in a baggie. I now feel really, really stupid.

So when we checked out, I took my baggie with the bugs to the front desk. Let me tell you... they tried to stay calm, but I could see it on their faces. They called some managers, and asked me to wait. A manager came out and shook my hand and sat me down and said she had to have a talk with me. At that point I just knew these bugs were bed bugs.

She said that these bugs were indeed bed bugs. We said that they hadn't seen them at Vero Beach in quite some time. She said that in her opinion they probably were brought in the room from the previous guest. She said that even though the room had been cleaned before we arrived, that the cleaning doesn't cover getting rid of bed bugs. She asked if the kids were okay, and I told her I hadn't let them sleep in that bed.

She talked to me for quite awhile, and then told me that she had to develop a plan of action.

Okay.... I have to go for now, but there is still so much more to tell you guys.

That's terrible! There's nothing worse than a bad vacation..... except maybe a bad vacation with bugs.....:confused3

Oh, and speaking of bugs, my wonderous luck continued this week when I found a deer tick on my bathroom wall, then discovered a bite on my back! Lovely! :scared1:
Fortunately I got to the doctor before the bacteria spread, and all I had to do was take a preventative dose of antibiotics (unfortunately, you can't eat within two hours of it or else it loses efficacy, and I hadn't eaten all day, so it made me SERIOUSLY loopy and feeling less than wonderful). I guess that reduces my risk of developing Lyme Disease by 50%, and since I caught it early (it may have come in with the bats, but more likely I picked it up on Friday when I did a 20 mile bike ride or yesterday when I golfed) those chances are better. If not, I get 3 full weeks of horse pills! But the good news is that I'll be looking for it, and as such it's highly unlikely to get past my notice and do any real damage.
I'm feeling a little snakebit, however....
Bats, mice, ticks...... ugh. What a couple of weeks......
But hey, tomorrow it's only 90 days until Disney!

Tnmomof4, YIKES! What an end to that hotel stay. Make sure when you do start your official TR that you give us a link to it :)

OMG tnmom!!! :scared1: That is aweful! I'm so sorry you guys had a not so fun trip! Kudos to you for keeping your cool with the whole bug situation! I would've been freaking out the second i saw them! (the hotel staff probably wouldn't have liked me! ) Hopefully your November trip will be alittle more magical! Hurricane season is over after october right?

We're going 11/18 to 11/23 - I could only get BWV or OKW, and couldn't use AAA discount. :rolleyes1
I got most of my ADR's (thank goodness my DD9 is past Cindy's!!), but it seems like whenever you go, it's busy nowadays. Maybe b/c the dollar is so cheap, lots of o/s US travelers?

We will be there 11/7 to 11/16! OKW Villas!
YAAAY! Just got booked it yesterday and added a day this morning!
Now I have to find an affordable flight. Ugh.
