Novelty Songs

When I was a little kid, this song scared the heck out of me. My older brother had the record and played it a lot. The guy’s voice and the sound effects are just so creepy. The B-side, with the song recorded backwards, was also quite disturbing.

As a child my friend has an album full of novelty song. I just have to remember what was on it. 😂
In the late 70’s and 80’s, I used to listen to the Dr. Demento radio show. When I was in college, my whole dorm would tune in on Sunday nights. He played all novelty songs, some posted here, including lots of parody songs, many by Weird Al Yankovic early in his career. I still have two albums that are “Best Of” Dr. Demento collections.

I remembered the album I mentioned and found a YouTube commercial on it. 😂

During the Gulf War: Operation Desert Storm, two separate, local DJs made a mix of Styx's song Show Me the Way with various sound bites, after the original version had already been out for about 5 months before the war had even started. Someone else combined those two mixes together into this version below, which became an anthem during the Gulf War. The song was actually written by Dennis De Young for his son, about losing faith.

This Desert Storm version has never and will never appear on any Styx album or compilation. De Young said, "I let them play that version on the radio, but I said I didn’t want to sell that version. To me, that was like selling war. You can’t do that. Guys who were in Desert Storm come up to me all the time and tell me what that song meant to them. And that’s great, and that’s how it should exist for those people and in that way, if they so choose.”
