Nov 11-14 Veteran's day and marathon weekend
or
Dec 9-12 Christmas season a month after bday

My daughters' birthdays are Nov 8 and I'm thinking of a birthday trip, but that weekend sounds crazy!

A month after their birthdays, unless you decide you want to do the race. I go every year for that weekend for the race. It wasn't bad until last year, with Veteran's Day on Friday. This year will probably be just as bad, since it will be observed on Friday again. Looking ahead, it'll be three day weekends for Veteran's Day until 2020. Oy.

I would vote for the December dates as well, but there will be crowds regardless of when you go. The December period is right before the holiday season AP Blockouts go into effect (starting Dec 15 so SoCal and SoCal Select), so that might mean fairly busier evenings as AP holders come into the parks one last time before the blockout starts.

I've been there during the marathon weekend before and it was also the kick off to the Holiday season (which has been how they've been doing it for the last few years). It was pretty crowded on the weekend with marathon-goers, plus Holiday-season guests all packed into the parks on the same weekend. It wasn't crazy-capacity-crowd-level-busy, but it was certainly busy.

I can't really answer -- the only trips I've made so far have been for Avengers race weekends. I can say that 2016, with Veteran's day on Friday, was MUCH worse than 2015 or 2014, with Veteran's day midweek. My guess would be it was more crowded -- probably much more crowded -- than a mid-July weekend.
