Not your typical take out question

We (dd10 and my elderly mother in electric wheelchair) will be at WDW Dec 14-22. I'd originally booked free dining AND club level at WL because I knew there would be days that mother would not go to parks and I wanted her to have access to food if she were at the hotel alone. Now mother has decided that she wants a theme park view for those days so I've changed the reservation to Contemporary tower.

I've made one breakfast reservation (Tusker House) and the rest (CRT, 1900 Park Fare, Garden Grill, O'hana, Akershus) are late lunch or early dinner. If mother isn't feeling well enough to go to the park, we wouldn't know 24 hours in advance for cancellation. Plus, we still need a meal for her so I would not want to cancel. Could my daughter and I keep the reservation, order my mother's meal, and then ask for a box to take it back to the hotel? I know at least Akershus is a buffet. Could we do this at a buffet?

Thanks!

Maybe the question wasn't so unusual - I just found this thread

I guess I don't understand why we couldn't just order her meal, as if she were sitting at the table, and then ask for a to-go-box. It wouldn't be any extra work for the chef or server, and I realize we'd still be charged the gratuity.

Yes, she could order room service, but a couple of nights of that and she'd run out of credits. She can't make it by herself to the CS restaurants so she'd be stuck waiting on me. I plan to have groceries delivered for snacks, beverages, and sandwiches.

As noted on the thread you linked, it really depends on the restaurant so you'll have to ask at each one. Since you and your daughter are dining at the restaurant there's a better chance you'll be able to order for your Mother as opposed to someone who just walks up to the podium.

If a restaurant won't let you order the extra meal here's an option to consider. We've found that Disney's portions are frequently quite large so my adult daughter and I frequently share meals. If you and your daughter both order full meals, would there be enough left for you to take back to your Mother? You could even share one meal and leave the other one untouched for your Mother. She'll be able to supplement with the CL food offerings as well.

I doubt buffets and all you care to eat places have a "to go" option. Akershus is a unique appetizer buffet & order an entree from the menu arrangement so I don't know what they would do.

While restaurants have containers to box up leftovers, many don't have bags to carry them in so you might want to take a tote and even ziploc plastic bags just in case of spillage.

Edited to add: Sorry, I just realized all your choices are buffets and family style so you won't be able to share. The only place you might be able to take her meal is CRT since it's pre-paid and maybe the entree at Akershus because that course is ordered from a menu.

ALL of your reservations are fixed price meals. You can't do take out from these places or order one person a meal to go. The only 2 that aren't all you can eat are CRT and Akershus. CRT is 2 credits, so even if you could get it to go, room service is a better option. The PP touched on Akershus.

You stated that she would have to wait on you for CS...well, she would have to wait on you to bring back TS as well.

Tusker House and 1900 PF are buffets. Ohana and Garden Grill are all you care to eat. I wouldn't expect a buffet at home to do take out either.

I'm sorry for speaking elliptically. Generally, our CS meals would be during lunch when she'd be at the hotel. I'll have grocery food for those occasions. After dinner TS meals we tend to go directly back to the hotel.

It looks like we're out of luck since the majority of our meals are all you care to eat or buffet. Still, paying full price for one take out container seems like a good deal for Disney. I wish we were still staying CL. Figment, sharing meals was a good idea but that won't work for buffet or all you care to eat.

If mom decides not to attend an ADR after the 24-hour cancellation period, will we be charged the $10 fee - since my daughter and I will still utilize the reservation? Will we forfeit my mother's TS credit? If we can collect a couple this way, it will cover room order meals.

You won't be charged a cancellation fee if some of you show up.

You won't forfeit your mother's credits, but if you don't use them for another meal then they'll go to waste. Yes you can save some up for her to use for room service.

Why can't she go get food herself if it's available somewhere in the resort? You said she'd be able to go get food from the CL lounge if you stayed club level. If it's a matter of carrying it, she could bring a tray that she places on her lap or she could go eat at the location itself. I would bet that The Wave would have dinner openings most nights and if not then she could eat in the Wave lounge area using a TS credit.

I just read this on another thread about a 10 yr old who preferred kids meals... The poster said to have the pay OOP for a kid's meal and save the TS credit. That would work perfectly to get extra credits for mom's room service!!

oh, forget it. That won't work for buffets and all you care to eat. :(

Could your mother manage to get to the other monorail resorts on her own? The Wave right there in Contemporary, Kona Cafe over at the Poly, and Grand Floridian Cafe over at GF may all be decent, easy to get into options if she's at the resort and you guys are at a park.

I've also heard decent things about Contempo Cafe in CR as a quick service place.

No, her mobility is very limited. She lives with us now and she manages to walk about 20 feet max, with a walker. Anything further and she needs a wheelchair. She also gets totally rattled in crowds!

I knew this was going to be an impossible trip to plan, I'll just have to take it on a day by day basis. Even if she's too tired to begin the day at a park, my daughter and I could always go back to CR to get her and take her to the dinner ADR. Or, there's always room service.
