Well, I am on a whirlwind vacation in Venice and I have to say, the place, the people, the culture, the food... all amazing.

Not so much by room.

Mould. Grime. Dirt. Mildew. Light fixtures hanging off the ceiling. Garden furniture INSIDE. Empty, disconnected minibar. Toilet IN THE BEDROOM. No-one manning reception after 3PM. It's pretty disgusting.

Fortunately I'll be spending my time out and about or I'd be pretty disgusted! Ah well. You get what you pay for!

I am so sorry! Do you have the option to check out early? Venice IS amazing. If you can call around to find another hotel, they often let you see the room before you agree to pay. I hope you enjoy the rest of your trip and find better accommodations!

Had a bad pizza, was violently sick. One thin sheet on a razor thin mattress, criminally cold. No room service. Gonna chalk up this holiday to bad experience. Next time, I'll go with people or to somewhere with taxis that don't cost your immortal soul.

Sadly this is all I have budgeted for and Venice is amazingly expensive. Or else that's exactly what I would do. Frankly I made a mistake. Well, two. First, I should have gone with someone else. Second, I should have saved for three or so extra months and stayed at a really nice hotel.

Sometimes you bite the bullet and put stuff on your credit card that you didn't budget for. This feels like one of those cases. I'm normally super frugal, but I once went to a hotel in Hawaii that ended up having bed bugs. I changed rooms two more times, and the rooms were all pretty awful. So I got on my Blackberry and booked myself for the Grand Hyatt. Money well spent. I carried a credit card balance for a couple of months and paid it off. Best decision ever.

I’m sure we’ve all heard that European 3-star hotels aren’t the same as American 3-star hotels, but those pics are ridiculous. I feel like I need a shower & a tetanus shot just looking at them. Good luck, OP!

You might find a less expensive hotel outside the city near the Venice-Mestre area.

I've been to Venice twice (I'm assuming Venice, Italy) and although the hotels were far from 5 star, they were always clean, if not small. The place is built in a large puddle, mold is probably a constant problem, but as you said... you get what you pay for almost everytime.

I did HAVE a favourite hotel in mind - beautiful place, amazing location - but it was several thousand dollars too expensive over the four nights! Pity. Maybe if I plan further in advance prices will be lower?

I like to follow Rick Steves guides and use his website for planning. although his popularity means that places he suggest get booked often/crowded.

Did you check TripAdvisor? The place is obviously in rough shape. I usually book AirBnB etc when overseas to try to get as nice a place for my money as possible …no need or desire for 5-star for me. Im not sure I could stay more than one night there. Sorry for the issues!

Don't always assume the airbnb reviews from travelers or site photos are correct. We ended up in Edinburgh flat which looked amazing in photos and reviews from travelers were good. But oh my, it was disgusting bathroom, and pull out couch - ugh. There was 5 of us, price ended up $325 per night, so really could not move during high season. No choice, location was the only good thing. And wifi did not work at all. After this trip, I hesitate with airbnb overseas. Do not trust the reviews or site photos. It really impacted my enjoyment of the trip, the first post covid trip.

If I could upload the photos you could see why I was really disappointed/disgusted.

We filed complaint just to get some of the money back because we had to use data to make arrangements, but airbnb denied our claim. I posted my honest review, but I don't trust it anymore.

I would be a little disgusted by the venice accomodations too, sorry....
