Norway College Program kids alerted to pavilion closing?

I don't think the numerous performances put on throughout the day all over WS are fake or gift shops. They are cultural performances put on by the people of that culture, and they are wonderful. DH and I still haven't seen them all. I particularly enjoyed all of the storytellers around WS at Christmas time, and wish we had had time to see them all when we were there n 2007.

I totally agree! It's such a wonderful experience to meet the CM's who do such a great job of representing their countries. We have had many special conversations with these young men and woman, and this only enhances our WS experience. When my DS went off to college in London:sad: it really lifted my spirits to speak with the very kind CM's who were representing England. I was able to share my story with them, and we connected. With that said, the structures in the WS may not be the real deal, but the CM's are certainly authentic. It is also important to remember that for those who may never have the opportunity to travel outside the USA, the WS provides them with a unique cultural experience. I can only hope the situation with the Norwegian CM's is only temporary.

I'm so disappointed about this!!! We don't have "official" word yet, do we? I just saw it on Facebook, as well.

We love the ride and the STORE! Between the five of us, we have a closet full of Helly Hansen jackets, hats, shoes, etc! I also happen to be very fond of Laila! DH loves the beer!:)

Yes, I know we can get these things elsewhere, but that's not really the point!:(

My daughter loves A & E, but a whole pavilion devoted to them? Not in WS.

I think an attraction, other than a meet/greet and store, would be better suited in DHS.

HEY! I said even I don't want them to change Norway to Arendelle, even if I don't have the love of the WS that others do.

You guys are hurting my feelings.:sad1:

It is all speculation at this point. It's as legitimate now as it was six months ago when it first popped up. Disney has neither confirmed or denied anything.

Unlike most people here I think this is GREAT. Mostly because I don't like maelstrom, I wish the world showcase had more attractions, as I kid we always skipped it and as an adult it mostly is a good place to walk the stroller while the kids nap. Its nice for groups with only adults but I welcome them adding some kid friendly attractions here

1.) If this proves true, they aren't adding any attractions, they're replacing one for a net gain of zero.
2.) Maelstrom, as it is, is kid-friendly.

But they are not ADDING anything. And Maelstrom was already kid friendly. Slapping some Olafs in there will do nothing but make it very crowded with Frozen fans.

to answer the question about ADRs being cancelled.. the answer is no. Mine is still there. No word yet that its been cancelled and I have seen other ADRs pop up while searching for better times over the past few weeks.

I really think this is alot of people getting spun up before anything has offically been put out by Disney. Is something coming? Most likely, but are they totally replacing Norway? Who knows... i doubt it but only Disney knows for sure. I see them just working A &E in the same way they working Aladdin in only maybe on a slightly larger scale. Time will tell and getting all sad or mad now isnt going to change anything. :goo dvibes

The link in the OP states, "CM's with contracts in October and beyond are being offered transfers and training in Food/Beverage." I'm not sure what would lead anyone to think the restaurants are closing. Why would they train the displaced CMs in food & beverage, then close the restaurants? They wouldn't.

And it looks like they are still able to be made for February. I'm really hoping all of this is just rumor stuff and not actually happening.

Now, addressing World Showcase being nothing more than restaurants and gift shops... does no one think about the performers? ;) I personally can't get through a WDW trip without seeing World Showcase Players (them yelling out "Free beer" and then commenting that will get everyone from Germany to come over cracks me up every time), Off Kilter, Serveur Amusant, and Sergio. And I loved The Ziti Sisters, as well. I also truly love talking with the international cast members at many of these pavilions. I have found Norway, as well as Germany and Morocco, to have some of the friendliest and most fun cast members. I really enjoy my time in World Showcase.

All that, and we love stopping and talking to the Cast Members and having them tell us about their country and traditions (especially poignant during holidays). They have fascinating stories to tell, and seem to genuinely appreciate people wanting to know about them and their country and not just directions to the bathroom or how long a wait for this or that.

And the restaurants are among our favorites in all of Disneyworld. Good food (and yeah, we know there is a lot of Americanized food, but if you talk with your server a bit you'll be surprised how much is authentic....or in a couple of cases we've had little surprises brought out to us for something more authentic).

I think I like WS best because of the human interaction. I adore so much about MK, but honestly, the CMs there mostly won't "chat" with you. They'll answer questions, but they don't really want to talk about their hometown....the exception is that the College Program CMs seem to love to talk to my daughter who has had CP in her goals since age 8.

I've come to terms that Disney is going to do whatever they want to do even if the majority of guests don't like it. I definitely don't agree with it as anybody who frequents these boards knows that the execs have not exactly been making the best decisions lately.I think as long as the pavilion is still called Norway or even switch to the broader Scandinavia name I'll tolerate it.Because the World Showcase is the World Showcase and there's no such place as Andarelle or whatever its called, yes I haven't seen the movie. If they put a Frozen overlay on Maelstrom,at least make up some tie in to Norway and have it make sense.

Ok, there are so many things going on here it was actually difficult to keep up with the conspiracy theories throughout the thread.

1. The article only says the cast members working in attractions and merchandise will be relocated. This means that food and beverage is remaining untouched. This also means that Arkushus should remain open throughout the duration of the referb. Additionally, Kringa should be left untouched as well.

2. Maelstrom might be your personal favorite, but you are a minority. In my time at Disney two weeks ago I cannot even count the number of people who disposed the ride. They said it smelled like rotten fish, or mildew. For me? It was boring. Now, I don't expect you or anyone else to agree with me. But from the reactions I heard from people getting off the ride it really wasn't people's favorites. Why would Disney waste money on an entirely new concept when they can very easily tweet an old concept and bring it up to date? What I really think is going to happen is the use of Frozen characters and themes to tell the story if Norway. Like we will be guided by Anna Elsa Olaf Kristof and Sven through the beauty that is Norway. Now, that us PURE speculation but it is an educated guess based on Donald Duck in Mexico.

3. The chart some of you keep reporting showing the top grossing movies is being read completely out of context. Frozen is number 101 because the final analysis of hug at chart was conducted on the last day of 2013. Roughly six weeks after the movie came out. In six weeks it made it to number 101. That is pretty incredible. Now, since then Frozen has completed its world wide release and has climbed to a total far exceeding one billion dollars. That number exceeds any of the numbers for any of the other movies on the list that has been posted. Additionally, many of the movies on said list enjoyed multiple release dates in theaters. That additionally needs to be taken into consideration as Frozen has only been released once.

4. They are not going to call the Norway pavilion Arendale. That makes zero sense. I also find it hard to believe they are going to change up the outside appearance too much as they are not conducting referbs of Arkushus. If Disney is anything they are streamline. They are not going to let stuff stick out like a sore thumb.

5. The museum isomer of you I are trashing featuring the items which inspired animators is actually a pretty cool museum. Because of the Frozen theme, my daughter learned a ton about Norway. It is classy. It wasn't tacky or ill conceived. Disney doesn't really do tacky, unless it's on purpose.... See DinoLand USA.

6. Disney is not 100% about kids. However, it is a land of magic. Magic and pixie dust exist In all of the parks not just Magic Kingdom. My daughter loved meeting Aladin and Jasmine in Lamps of Wonder and because of the movie tie in had a conversation starter with many of the Moroccan cast members. She learned how to say hello, thank you and good bye. She asked tons of questions about the carpets and the le laps she saw in the get shops. The movie tie in didn't make it less adult, it made it so my daughter could relate to what she was seeing. If we can utilize elements of childhood to help educate than why is that bad?

7. As far as a meet and greet for Anna and Elsa. Just... Duh. They need another location where Anna and Elsa can be seen. They have to release some of the strain at MK. Remember, for the first month and a half after thee movie came out it wasn't the splash hit yet. The location without the queue was good enough. Then, in January it exploded. Let it Go became a smash hit that the world fell in love with. Disney was not ready for it. They reacted fast though and are making wonderful ground. Frozen isn't going away. Building it into the parks is the future of Disney. It is just a fact.

8. Hollywood Studios would be an awesome place for frozen, however.... I honestly believe Hollywood Studios has been left the way it is because it will see a massive Star Wars expansion. We should hear more about this soon as Igar has already eluded to it. I think Star Wars will be Disney's Diagon Ally and Hogsmede. Again, this is purely speculation but it makes a ton of sense.

All in all... Disney is fluid. It is ever changing and will continue to be so. You're not going to like all of huge changes, you're going to love some. But no matter what they're going to happen. They are going to listen to their customer base and respond accordingly. The world wants more Frozen, so they're going to get it. I'm sorry if you don't like the movie. But, in that, you are a minority. Disney will do what is best for the moms ostensibly people to maximize their profits. They are a business, once they stop making money they will stop being what they are.

Oh wow I would actually want to go to HWS if they did up star wars like HP!!! I would love to be able to walk into the cantina and the millennium falcon!!! then go for a ride and blast stuff kinda like the toy story rides!! SO FUN!! I love this idea :D

All speculation, and just as possible as any other bit of speculative posting in this thread.

Sorry if this has been covered already, but I read the first 10 or so pages thoroughly yesterday and only skimmed the rest.

For what it's worth, my FP+ window opened today (for Oct 12-19) and Maelstrom didn't exist as a FP option during that time. My existing Akershus reservation still shows in My Disney Experience

I'm so happy I got a FP+ for Maelstrom for the end of September (in before the lock!)...and now I'm wondering if the change in "tiers" to make MAelstrom not a tier 1 anymore was a lead up to the closing of it somehow?

Great post. You and I think alike--Disney is a business and is wise to capitalize on the success of Frozen. Maelstrom needed a change over 20 years ago.

Maelstrom needs a change, I do agree with that. But again, it's too small to do Frozen justice. The ride area is too small and the queue is too small. The place will likely once again be swamped if pretty much left as it is.

They really need more space. Unless there is a ton behind the pavilion and they plan a long refurbishment, it will stay very small.

A PP said that she could handle an overlay as long as the basic integrity of Norway stays put. I'm of that mindset too. Norway has lost a lot over time and really can't stand to lose much more.

As for the movie list, keep in mind that those are domestic dollars adjusted for inflation and Frozen would be more current. At just over 400 Million it still hasn't broken into the top 100. Unfortunately, boxofficemojo doesn't show adjusted totals for worldwide numbers.

Maelstrom is not one of my favorite rides. I don't care if that gets changed. However, I'm getting tired of Frozen taking over everything. I liked the movie. But, I don't even think it is Disney's best. In the top 10, yes. :confused3

What I like about Epcot in general is that you don't have cartoon characters in your face constantly.

What gives me hope is that they haven't tied in other movies to a huge degree with their respective pavilions. Brave doesn't have a huge presence in the UK pavilion and Mulan doesn't have much of anything in China. Then again, there wasn't the hysteria over these movies like there is for Frozen.
